A laptop fan that is not spinning may be working as designed: some models keep fans off until the processor or graphics chip reaches a temperature threshold. Check your exact model’s behavior before assuming the fan has failed. If the manufacturer’s diagnostic reports a fault, or the fan stays off when the model says it should run, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
First, check whether the fan is supposed to be running
Fan behavior depends on the laptop model and its temperature-control settings. ASUS says fans on applicable devices may remain off until the CPU or GPU reaches an activation threshold. MSI likewise notes that some discrete-GPU fans start only after reaching a default temperature threshold. These behaviors do not apply to every laptop, so check your model’s manual or manufacturer utility for its expected fan behavior. A cool laptop at idle may not need active cooling. Check airflow without opening the laptop
- Set the laptop on a firm, level surface rather than a bed, blanket, or other soft surface that can block vents.
- Check that ventilation openings are unobstructed. Look for visible dust or debris around them.
- If cleaning is appropriate, follow your manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. HP notes that blocked vents can restrict airflow and increase fan workload; its fan and ventilation guidance covers vent cleaning and airflow.
For devices covered by ASUS’s cleaning guidance, shut down the laptop and disconnect its power cord first. ASUS recommends using a commercially available compressed-air can held at a distance, without turning the can upside down. It warns that powerful airflow from devices such as air compressors can damage fan blades. Do not assume this method suits every laptop; follow the instructions for your model. ASUS’s instructions and precautions describe the applicable approach.

If the fan seems inactive while the laptop is hot, note what it is doing and check whether a demanding application is using system resources. Manufacturer troubleshooting for fan and heat symptoms also includes airflow, power or thermal settings, and, in some cases, BIOS or power-management issues. Lenovo lists processor usage, applications, vent cleaning, and BIOS or power-manager issues among checks for unexpectedly high fan speed. HP also discusses power settings, vent cleaning, and BIOS updates for persistent fan noise. These checks address particular symptoms; they do not establish that a silent fan is broken or guarantee that a BIOS update will fix it.

Use only the support page for your exact model before changing firmware. An incorrect or interrupted BIOS update can create a separate problem. See Lenovo’s fan-speed troubleshooting and HP’s guidance for the models and symptoms they cover.
Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic, if your laptop supports it
Use a diagnostic tool made for your system rather than guessing from fan noise or feel. ASUS describes System Diagnosis in MyASUS and recommends service if the test identifies a problem; the feature is not available on every device. MSI describes hardware diagnosis through MSI Center for applicable notebooks. The application, menu, test, and meaning of its results vary by model. Know when to seek service
Arrange service if the supported diagnostic flags a problem, or if the fan remains inactive under the conditions in which the manufacturer says it should run. A professional can determine whether the problem is the fan or another part of the cooling system. If the laptop is unusually hot or shows a temperature warning, stop demanding work and follow the manufacturer’s safety and service guidance rather than continuing to test it.

Do not buy a generic replacement fan or follow a disassembly guide for a different model. Fans and access procedures are model- and configuration-specific. Before choosing a service provider, check whether the proposed part matches your exact model, whether the diagnostic points to a fan or a broader thermal problem, and whether warranty or service coverage applies. HP service documentation describes fan replacement in its applicable context and calls for verifying fan operation afterward with HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI; that is not a universal procedure. HP’s maintenance and service documentation illustrates why compatibility and post-repair verification matter.
