A slow download usually points to the update’s size or internet speed; a slow-moving progress bar during installation may be normal. Apple does not give one time limit that applies to every update, so first check which stage your iPhone is showing.
Why an iPhone update can take so long
Updating is a sequence, not a single operation. Apple’s platform guide describes detection, download, preparation, and installation; a wireless update downloads only the components needed to complete that update. The time depends on what the phone is doing at each stage.

- Downloading: Apple says download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed. Other simultaneous downloads can also compete for bandwidth.
- Preparing or installing: The phone processes the update files. Apple says the progress bar can move slowly or appear static, and duration varies with the files and the operation.
Apple’s guidance does not establish a typical duration or a universal number of minutes after which an update should be considered stuck. A pause in visible progress alone is not a reason to interrupt installation.
Identify the stage before troubleshooting
Read the message on screen: it may say downloading, preparing, or installing, or show an Apple logo with a progress bar. Network speed is most relevant while downloading. Once installation is underway, keep the phone powered and give the process time to finish.

What to do when the download is slow
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Apple recommends Wi-Fi for downloading an update. If possible, avoid downloading other content at the same time.
- Check the connection. If the phone cannot reach the update server or shows an error, retry on the current network, then try another network.
- Use a computer if the error persists. Apple’s iPhone guide says to use Finder on macOS 10.15 or later, or iTunes on macOS 10.14 or earlier or Windows. Back up the iPhone before updating through a computer.
You can continue using the iPhone while an update downloads. Apple does not publish a single download-time estimate because update size and internet speed differ.
Check compatibility and available storage
A wireless update may fail if the iPhone model does not support that iOS version or there is not enough available storage. Check the model’s compatibility with the version you are trying to install, then open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see available space.

Apple says iOS may temporarily remove app data that can be downloaded again to make room. If more space is needed, offload unused apps or remove apps manually. If a downloaded update repeatedly fails, Apple’s troubleshooting steps are:
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Select the update and tap Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the progress bar seems stuck
Keep the iPhone connected to power and allow the update to continue. Apple notes that the progress bar may appear static and, in some cases, may complete and start again. Do not force the phone to restart just because the bar has not visibly moved for a short time.

If the update never completes or the iPhone becomes unresponsive, follow Apple’s force-restart instructions for your model. If the progress bar remains or the problem recurs, contact Apple Support or arrange service.
When recovery mode is appropriate
Recovery mode is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a slow update. Apple lists it for cases such as an Apple logo remaining on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, a computer not recognizing the iPhone, or a Connect to computer screen appearing.

If a computer offers Update or Restore and you have not tried Update, Apple says to try that first. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data, so do not choose it casually; have a backup if possible.

Automatic updates are for a later update
Apple also supports automatic installation overnight while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. This is a convenience for future updates, not a fix for a download or installation that is already failing.
