Why Is My Integrated GPU Showing as Removable in Windows 11?

A GPU in Windows 11’s Safely Remove menu is not necessarily removable or faulty. Verify the adapter and its status in Device Manager before changing settings.

If an integrated GPU appears in Windows 11’s Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media menu, that listing alone does not mean the graphics chip is physically removable or that it has failed. Microsoft describes integrated GPUs as built into a Windows device, while the safe-removal feature is intended for supported hardware that can be disconnected. The precise cause of a GPU appearing in the menu is not established for every PC, so check the adapter in Device Manager before changing drivers or firmware settings.

Why can you eject an integrated GPU in Windows 11?

The menu entry is not proof that Windows considers the integrated GPU a user-removable component. Microsoft says integrated GPUs are built into a Windows device, and its safe-removal guidance concerns ejecting supported devices before disconnecting them. Those facts do not establish why a particular graphics adapter appears in the menu.

A 2025 Windows Central report identifies PCIe hot-plug configuration as one possible explanation for GPU eject listings, but it does not confirm a universal root cause. Treat this as a possibility, not a diagnosis. The exact PC model, GPU, driver, firmware configuration, and even whether the menu entry refers to the integrated or discrete adapter matter.

On laptops and tablets, an integrated GPU may work alongside a discrete GPU, with Windows switching between them for workload and power efficiency. A menu entry may therefore not be the adapter you assume it is; verify the name in Device Manager.

Is it safe to click Eject on the GPU?

Do not use Eject on an active graphics adapter as a troubleshooting test. Microsoft documents safe removal for devices intended to be disconnected; it does not provide a GPU-specific eject procedure. The listing itself does not show that the GPU can be physically removed.

If you accidentally select Eject and the adapter disappears or display behavior changes, restart Windows and check the adapter in Device Manager. Restarting is a cautious general troubleshooting step, not a Microsoft-confirmed fix for this specific menu behavior.

How to check the graphics adapter in Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters. Note every adapter name, whether the suspected integrated GPU is listed, and whether any entry has a warning icon.
  3. Open the adapter’s properties. Check its device status and any accompanying error message. Device Manager also provides manufacturer and driver information. A yellow exclamation mark indicates a device problem; read the status message rather than inferring a fault from the eject menu.

If the expected adapter is present with no warning, the menu listing by itself is not evidence of a graphics failure. If it is missing, disabled, or showing an error, follow the driver and manufacturer-support steps below.

What to do if the adapter is missing or has a driver problem

Identify a generic graphics adapter

If the entry is named Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of the expected Intel graphics adapter, Windows is using a preloaded generic basic driver, according to Intel. Confirm the adapter’s identity and driver before changing BIOS settings.

Install a compatible graphics driver

Use Windows Update or the official support page for your computer to find a compatible driver. Intel notes that PC manufacturers may customize graphics drivers for their systems. Microsoft recommends contacting the hardware manufacturer if Device Manager cannot provide a compatible driver. Avoid assuming that a generic driver update will address the eject listing itself; these steps help with adapter detection or driver problems, not a confirmed cause of the menu entry.

Ask the manufacturer before changing firmware settings

If the integrated GPU is absent or disabled, ask the computer or motherboard manufacturer whether the system BIOS or hybrid-graphics mode controls it. Intel’s guidance about BIOS and hybrid mode addresses missing integrated graphics; it does not establish that either setting causes the safe-removal listing.

  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

Intel also notes that installing a PCI Express graphics controller can disable processor integrated graphics depending on BIOS features. That concerns GPU configuration, not the reason an adapter appears as ejectable. Do not change PCIe hot-plug settings based only on the menu entry: the hot-plug explanation is tentative, and firmware options vary by PC.

What the menu listing does—and does not—tell you

  • It tells you: Windows is offering an eject action for a listed graphics adapter.
  • It does not tell you: that the integrated GPU is physically removable, that it has failed, or which setting caused the listing.
  • It is not a confirmed diagnosis: Microsoft and Intel’s documented guidance covers safe removal, adapter identification, drivers, and missing graphics devices—not a universal cause for this Windows 11 symptom.
