A 100% CPU reading means your Droplet is using all of the processing capacity represented by that metric; it does not, by itself, tell you why. First find which process is busy, check whether encoding is happening on the Droplet, and compare CPU and load with the stream’s start and stop times. Only change encoding settings or resize after the evidence points to that remedy.
What 100% CPU means on a Droplet
DigitalOcean says high CPU or memory use inside a Droplet is normally caused by applications or kernel processes running on it. The number needs context: DigitalOcean’s CPU metric represents the Droplet’s total processing capacity as 100%, while some command-line tools report usage per core and can therefore show more than 100% on a multi-core system. Check which metric or tool produced the reading before interpreting it. DigitalOcean’s metrics documentation explains the available resource measurements.

Load average is a different measure: it counts processes running or waiting. Compare the 1-, 5-, and 15-minute values with the Droplet’s vCPU count. A brief increase may be temporary; a load average that stays above the vCPU count can indicate sustained pressure. Neither a CPU percentage nor load average identifies the responsible process on its own.

DigitalOcean notes that hypervisor CPU or memory use does not translate directly into the CPU or memory usage reported for your Droplet. Investigate the guest’s own processes and metrics rather than assuming a host reading explains the stream.

Find out whether streaming work is actually running on the Droplet
A Droplet only bears the encoding load if it performs the encoding itself. Establish the path of the video first: OBS or another encoder might be running on the Droplet, on a local computer, or in a separate service. If the encoder runs elsewhere, the Droplet’s high CPU may have another cause, even if its outbound traffic rises during the stream.
- Record the setup. Note where the encoder runs, the number of Droplet vCPUs, the stream’s start and stop times, and which program or command-line tool reports 100%.
- Inspect processes while streaming. Use your operating system’s process monitor or system tools to identify which process consumes CPU. DigitalOcean recommends monitoring processes that may be using Droplet resources. Compare the busy process with the streaming software and with ordinary system services.
- Repeat with the stream stopped. Compare the same process list and resource readings during an idle period. A process that is busy in both periods may be unrelated to streaming; a process that rises with the stream is a stronger lead, though timing alone does not prove cause.
- Compare the same time interval in monitoring graphs. Look at CPU, load average, memory, and public outbound bandwidth together. DigitalOcean’s Droplet graphs include bandwidth, disk I/O, and disk usage by default; CPU, load average, and memory graphs are available when the metrics agent is installed and enabled.
DigitalOcean Monitoring is free and opt-in. The agent is not installed by default in all circumstances. See the Monitoring quickstart for setup and alert options, and the metrics documentation for metric definitions. Public outbound bandwidth can confirm that data is leaving the Droplet, but a bandwidth increase alone does not explain a CPU increase.

If OBS encoding is the busy workload
OBS’s included x264 encoder performs software encoding on the CPU. If OBS is running on the Droplet and x264 is the process consuming capacity, encoding is a plausible contributor. Its impact depends on the encoding settings and the rest of the workload; do not assume x264 is responsible unless the process and timing evidence support that conclusion.
OBS says its x264 presets trade encoding speed against CPU use, and an encoder that cannot keep pace can produce skipped frames or an “Encoding overloaded!” message. If that is what you observe, test a less demanding preset and reassess performance. OBS also recommends reducing demanding sources or output workload when performance is constrained. Change one relevant setting at a time and compare results, so you can tell whether the adjustment helped. A hardware encoder can move encoding work to a specialized GPU component, but that is only an option if compatible hardware is actually available to the environment running OBS. Do not assume a DigitalOcean Droplet has a GPU available, or that a physical GPU can be added to it. Confirm what hardware the VM exposes and whether OBS can use it before considering a hardware-encoding configuration.

Consider a larger Droplet when high CPU or memory use persists under a normal workload after you have identified and reviewed the busy processes. DigitalOcean describes resizing as an option for a Droplet chronically experiencing high resource use. Before choosing a larger plan, collect the vCPU count, process-level evidence, and representative CPU, load, and memory readings. A single 100% spike, without that context, is not enough to establish that the Droplet is undersized.

If you cannot identify a resource-heavy process or the graphs do not show sustained pressure, investigate the specific operating system, streaming software, and configuration instead of treating the percentage as a diagnosis. The relevant cause may not be the stream encoder.
