Monitor a 24/7 YouTube broadcast at three separate points: the upstream encoder or AWS Elemental MediaLive, AWS Elemental MediaPackage in Amazon CloudWatch, and the audience-facing stream in YouTube Live Control Room. None of those views alone proves the entire path is healthy. Use metric-based alarms for detection, logs and events for added context, and an attended incident process to investigate and respond.
What each monitoring layer tells you
A continuous broadcast is a delivery chain, not a single service. A healthy MediaPackage metric does not prove YouTube is receiving or presenting the stream correctly; a YouTube warning does not by itself identify whether the fault began upstream or at the origin. Check the layers together and compare observations for the same time interval.

Check the upstream encoder first
If the source is AWS Elemental MediaLive
In the MediaLive console, inspect the channel state, Health tab, pipeline details, active alerts and destination information. Depending on channel configuration, MediaLive may expose one or two pipelines. The console shows active alerts and when they clear. Start here if MediaPackage input activity falls or an input-quality signal changes; confirm the specific pipeline and destination rather than assuming every channel has the same layout. Do not assume MediaLive is part of the workflow. Check the encoder’s own output and connection status, then compare its timestamps with MediaPackage’s input metrics. For YouTube encoder workflows, YouTube recommends testing before going live, reviewing the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video quality during the event, testing backup-encoder failover, and verifying the event is accessible through channel or watch pages and on mobile devices. Monitor MediaPackage in CloudWatch
Scope metrics to the stream
In Amazon CloudWatch, open the AWS/MediaPackage namespace and select dimensions that identify the channel and relevant ingest or origin endpoint. AWS documents dimensions including channel, ingest endpoint, origin endpoint, request type, status code and track type; the exact metrics and dimensions vary by MediaPackage version. Verify available metric names against the version deployed before building dashboards or alarms. See MediaPackage v2 metrics.
AWS says MediaPackage publishes live metrics every minute or sooner. This is a metric publication cadence, not a frame-by-frame view or a guarantee that an alarm will detect a fault instantaneously. AWS also states that the referenced CloudWatch statistics are retained for 15 months; this is not a YouTube analytics retention statement. Both figures are AWS documentation statements, with no publication year stated on the current documentation page.

Signals worth watching
- Input activity: Check whether the expected input remains active. A drop can point upstream, but correlate it with encoder or MediaLive status before assigning cause.
- Output requests and bytes: Look for continued origin delivery activity at the relevant endpoint rather than relying only on account-wide totals.
- Request response times: Watch for a change from the endpoint’s normal pattern that could indicate slower origin responses.
- HTTP status codes: Inspect increases in 4xx or 5xx responses and use request-related dimensions to narrow the affected endpoint or request type.
- Quality scores: Where supported for the deployed input or output, track available quality measures and compare them with normal behavior.
CloudWatch metric dimensions and supported quality signals depend on the MediaPackage version and workflow. Do not create alarms against a metric simply because its name appears in documentation for another version.
Check YouTube’s view of the destination
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review stream health, status messages and real-time stream analytics. YouTube says errors appear beside the Health Indicator with timestamps; red errors are characterized as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Read the message and timestamp alongside AWS observations rather than treating its color as a diagnosis of the upstream cause. See YouTube live streaming errors.

Real-time analytics may include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views and average view duration; the exact metrics depend on stream type and interface. These figures describe the YouTube destination and audience, not MediaPackage infrastructure health. See YouTube live stream metrics. YouTube’s encoder guidance also says to monitor stream health and review messages during the event: YouTube encoder settings.
Set alarms and supporting diagnostics
Build alarms around your service objective
Create CloudWatch alarms for metrics that represent failure or degradation for this specific stream, and route notifications to a response process that is actually attended. CloudWatch alarms evaluate thresholds and can notify or trigger actions. Set thresholds, evaluation periods and notification paths using the broadcast’s service objectives and observed normal behavior; AWS does not prescribe universal thresholds for every 24/7 stream.

Use events, logs and headers as supporting evidence
MediaPackage events can add event-driven context, and relevant events can be routed to an AWS target such as Amazon SNS or Lambda. AWS explicitly describes these events as best effort, so pair them with metric-based alarms instead of relying on events as the only way to detect a problem. See MediaPackage events.
Access logs can help investigate requests. Manifest update response headers can help diagnose stale manifests in workflows where that feature applies. See the MediaPackage monitoring overview and AWS MediaPackage logging and monitoring.

Triage a broadcast incident in order
- YouTube reports unhealthy input: Inspect the encoder or, if used, the MediaLive channel and pipeline first. Then confirm whether MediaPackage input activity and available quality metrics changed at the same time.
- Input looks active, but origin output fails or slows: Inspect MediaPackage output and request metrics, endpoint and request dimensions, response times, status codes and relevant access logs.
- MediaPackage output looks normal, but YouTube reports errors or viewers cannot access the event: Review YouTube’s timestamped status messages and investigate the destination handoff. Confirm access from the channel or watch page and a mobile device.
- Dashboards disagree: Preserve timestamps and compare the same interval, endpoint and stream. Metric publication cadence and each platform’s health checks may not line up exactly.
- The fault is detected outside staffed hours: Follow the escalation runbook and response coverage defined for the broadcast. The required response-time objective, thresholds and staffing plan depend on the service targets and operating model.
Keep monitoring useful for a 24/7 operation
- Separate source, origin and destination signals so an alert identifies the layer that needs investigation.
- Scope dashboards and alarms to the channel and endpoints involved; account-wide aggregates can conceal a single-stream fault.
- Record timestamps and relevant endpoint or pipeline identifiers when escalating, so teams can compare evidence across consoles.
- Test the monitoring and notification path, including backup-encoder failover where applicable, before relying on it during a continuous broadcast.
- Maintain an attended incident path. A metric, event or dashboard cannot act on an alert unless someone or an appropriate automated process receives it.
