A slow computer can be caused by a full drive, an app consuming CPU or memory, too much startup activity, malware on Windows, outdated software, or hardware that has reached its limits. Start by checking what is actually happening while the slowdown occurs; cleanup or an upgrade is not automatically the answer.
How to narrow down the cause
- Notice when it slows down. Is startup slow, is one app dragging, or does the whole computer remain sluggish? A problem limited to one app calls for checking that app’s requirements and compatibility before changing system-wide settings.
- Close work you do not need and restart. If performance improves, reopen your usual apps gradually and see whether a particular one brings the slowdown back.
- Inspect resource use during the problem. Use Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on Mac to see whether an app or process is using substantial CPU or memory. Close only apps you recognize and do not need; do not terminate unfamiliar system processes.
- Check storage separately from memory. A nearly full drive and high memory pressure are different problems and have different remedies. Neither of the cited support guides establishes a universal percentage of free space to maintain.
Fix a slow Windows PC
Microsoft’s performance guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Work through the checks below, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what helps.

Install Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Microsoft says updates often include fixes and performance improvements; available labels may vary by Windows version. Review optional driver updates where offered.
Check Task Manager for a bottleneck
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, look for apps using unusually high CPU, memory, or disk while the computer is slow; use Performance for an overall view. Close only a program you recognize and are not using. A busy process can point to the immediate cause, but the reading alone does not establish why it is busy.

Scan for malware
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. Microsoft notes that malware can consume CPU and disk resources. If a scan identifies a threat, follow Windows Security’s guidance rather than installing an unverified cleanup utility.
Free storage carefully
Open Settings > System > Storage to review space use and available cleanup options such as Storage Sense or temporary-file removal. Disk Cleanup is another built-in option. Review what is selected before removal, and do not delete personal files just to clear space.

Reduce startup and background activity
Open Task Manager and select Startup apps to review what launches when you sign in. Disable only items you recognize and do not need at startup; an app may still be available when opened manually. Uninstall apps you no longer use if appropriate, since they can occupy storage and contribute to background activity.
Adjust power mode only when useful
When you need maximum performance, Windows’ Best performance power mode may help. The tradeoff is higher power use, faster battery drain on a laptop, and more heat. It is not a general-purpose cure for a slow computer.

Use the health report as a secondary check
In Windows Security, open Device performance & health. Its report checks areas including storage capacity, battery, apps and software, and Windows Time, and may offer recommendations. It complements rather than replaces observing the slowdown in Task Manager.
Account for Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Check Microsoft’s current Windows performance guidance for support information and version-specific details.

Fix a slow Mac
Check startup-disk storage
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage and review macOS recommendations. If large files are taking up space, Apple says you can move them to another disk or external storage device, then remove unneeded copies from the startup disk. External storage can make room for files; it is not, by itself, a guaranteed speed upgrade. See Apple’s guidance on freeing storage space on a Mac.

Inspect CPU and memory activity
Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, then inspect its CPU and Memory views while the Mac is sluggish. Apple explains how to monitor CPU activity and view memory usage. If an app is responsible, save your work and quit it normally. Quit a process only when you understand what it does.

Read memory pressure, not just unused RAM
Activity Monitor’s memory pressure indicates how efficiently the Mac is using memory. Apple cautions that unused memory by itself does not necessarily improve performance. Whether memory can be added or replaced depends on the exact Mac model; check its specifications before considering an upgrade. Apple explains how to check whether a Mac needs more RAM.
Check app requirements and compatibility
If one app triggers the slowdown, check its system requirements and confirm it is compatible with your Mac. Apple notes that an app may need more memory than is readily available and advises quitting apps that are not compatible with the computer.
Match the symptom to the next check

When cleanup is not enough
Software maintenance cannot guarantee a meaningful improvement on a computer constrained by older hardware. Microsoft explicitly cautions that an older PC with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from its recommended steps. If the checks above do not identify a fix, use the exact device model and configuration to assess supported repairs or replacement; no compatible component can be determined from the symptoms alone.
