Because converting a video does not automatically make it smaller. If the export uses a higher video bitrate, resolution, or frame rate—or a less efficient codec or encoder setting—it can contain more data than the source. Duration and audio settings also affect the total. Compare the source and output settings first; without those details, there is no way to identify the exact cause.
First, distinguish a YouTube upload from a live stream
“For a YouTube stream” can mean either uploading a prerecorded video or sending a live feed. YouTube gives separate encoding guidance for those workflows. The upload recommendations below are for prerecorded files; live-ingestion bitrates are for an encoder sending a stream to YouTube. They are not interchangeable.

What to compare in the source and converted file
Check both files in your video editor or a media-information tool. Compare the properties below before changing export settings.
- Duration: a longer output usually contains more data, even if its settings are otherwise similar.
- Resolution: an export with more pixels per frame can be larger.
- Frame rate: more frames per second can increase the amount of video data.
- Video codec and encoder settings: different codecs, presets, and quality targets can produce different file sizes at comparable visual quality.
- Video bitrate or quality mode: a higher bitrate writes more data per second. A fixed bitrate and a quality-based setting do not necessarily produce the same size.
- Audio codec and bitrate: audio contributes to the total file size too.
A re-encode can therefore make an already compressed file larger: the new export may use a higher bitrate or less efficient settings than the source. The file extension alone will not explain the difference.

Choose settings for a prerecorded YouTube upload
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec. It recommends variable bitrate and says no bitrate limit is required; its listed bitrates are recommendations, not mandatory targets. YouTube also advises keeping the export at the frame rate at which the video was recorded. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
The following are YouTube’s current SDR upload bitrate recommendations on that page, accessed in 2026. They are guidance for prerecorded uploads, not predictions of the resulting file size.

| Resolution | 24/25/30 fps | 48/50/60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
Do not raise a source’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate just to match a table entry. YouTube’s upload guide also lists stereo audio at 384 kbps and notes that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. Duration and audio settings still contribute to the file’s total size.
If you mean a live stream, use live-encoder guidance
A live encoder sends data to YouTube in real time, so live-ingestion recommendations are a different kind of setting from export targets for an uploaded file. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding. Its live H.264 table lists 14 Mbps for 4K/30 and 50 Mbps for 4K/60; those figures apply to live ingestion, not to prerecorded uploads. The full settings are in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

YouTube says it transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers can watch across devices and networks. That processing does not make the live-ingestion bitrate table an upload target.
A practical way to reduce an oversized export
- Confirm the workflow. Decide whether you are exporting a prerecorded upload or configuring a live encoder.
- Check the source and output properties. Compare duration, resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate or quality mode, and audio codec and bitrate.
- Look for settings that increased data. Check for a higher fixed bitrate, a more demanding quality target, a larger frame size, a higher frame rate, or an encoder preset that is less efficient for the footage.
- Export for the source, not for an arbitrary maximum. For an upload, YouTube recommends MP4/H.264, variable bitrate, and the recording’s original frame rate. Use a resolution that matches the source unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Recheck the result. Compare the new file’s size and properties with the source. If you change several settings at once, it becomes harder to tell which one affected size.
YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking video settings in an editing program; it lists H.264, automatic data rate and keyframes, common supported frame rates, AAC-LC audio, and choosing the original video size. See Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube.

Why bitrate does not determine file size by itself
Bitrate is data per unit of time, so a higher video bitrate generally means a larger video portion for the same duration. But the complete file also includes audio and container overhead, and variable-bitrate encoding can use different amounts of data across a video depending on its content. The resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder choices, and duration all matter. A recommendation for a particular resolution and frame-rate combination is not a guarantee that a file will have a specific size.
