Text that appears only after scrolling, waiting for an application request, or taking an action may not exist when capture starts. First check whether the text is in the live page; if it is, investigate print styling and PDF rendering.
Find out whether the text failed to load or failed to print
- Open the page in a browser and inspect the missing area. Check whether the text is present in the DOM before capture.
- Scroll the relevant region into view and wait for its text to appear. If it appears only after scrolling, the page likely relies on a viewport-sensitive loading trigger.
- Capture again after confirming the text is present. If it is visible in the browser but missing from the PDF, investigate print media and PDF rendering rather than adding more load time.
These checks separate two different problems: content not yet fetched or inserted, and content present in the page but hidden or changed in the PDF. Google’s guidance for lazy-loaded content emphasizes that relevant content should load when it becomes visible in the viewport: Fix Lazy-Loaded Website Content.

Why full-page capture may still miss content
Visibility-triggered loading has not fired
Browsers and websites can defer work until an image, iframe, or other region approaches the viewport. Sites may also use JavaScript, including IntersectionObserver-based logic, to fetch or insert content at that point. A full-page output request does not, by itself, establish that every viewport-triggered request has run. The page’s implementation matters: text may already be present but hidden, or it may not be inserted until a trigger fires.

If the missing text is in a nested scrollable panel, scrolling the document may not scroll that panel; test the inner region directly.

The capture started before the page was ready
Capture tools can wait for a limited time, but reaching that limit does not mean a site’s data fetch or rendering finished. Chrome headless documents a --timeout limit for --dump-dom, --screenshot, and --print-to-pdf; capture can end while loading continues. Chrome’s --virtual-time-budget can fast-forward timer-based code such as setTimeout and setInterval, but it does not prove that content was fetched or that an interaction happened. PDF print styles differ from the screen
Puppeteer’s page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default. A site’s @media print rules can hide, rearrange, or restyle content that appears on screen. If the text is present in the DOM and visible in the browser but absent in the PDF, compare the page’s print presentation and inspect those rules. The PDF looks different from its text layer
If the words appear visually in the PDF but cannot be selected or found by text search, that is not the same as missing rendered content. Check the PDF visually as well as with text extraction; the official capture documentation cited here does not diagnose a particular PDF’s text-layer behavior.

Use a readiness check tied to the missing text
- Record the browser, capture library and version, whether you are generating a true PDF or converting a screenshot, and the page URL.
- Before capture, check whether the expected text exists in the DOM. If it does not, scroll its region into view or perform the page’s intended interaction.
- Wait for the text itself or a meaningful application-ready condition, such as the relevant content container being populated. Prefer that over an arbitrary delay.
- For long pages, scroll through sections in increments and allow their loading triggers to fire. For nested scrolling areas, scroll the relevant container.
- Capture only after confirming the expected content is present. If the DOM contains the text but the PDF does not, check print CSS and media mode.
- If using Chrome headless, review the timeout and virtual-time budget as timing controls, not as substitutes for triggering or verifying the content.
A fixed wait can help when a page has predictable timer-driven work, but it is not a universal fix: it cannot establish that a visibility trigger, network request, or user action completed.

Tool-specific checks
Chrome headless CLI
--dump-dom serializes the DOM after parsing and script execution; it is not simply the original HTML source. Use it to inspect page state, and review --timeout and --virtual-time-budget when investigating timing. Neither option guarantees that a page-specific scroll or interaction trigger ran. Puppeteer
Before page.pdf(), decide whether print or screen presentation is desired. Print media is the default; call page.emulateMediaType('screen') first if the PDF should use screen CSS. The waitForFonts option waits for document.fonts.ready; it helps with font readiness, not lazy-content triggers. PDF options also include timeout and page-range controls. Playwright documents PDF generation using print CSS media and also offers full-page screenshots. Choose the output that matches your goal, then separately ensure page content is ready; the capture method alone does not establish that viewport-triggered text loaded. See Playwright’s page API.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does full-page PDF capture automatically scroll the page?
Not necessarily. A full-page capture covers the document, but that does not prove the page’s own viewport-triggered loading behavior ran.

No. Puppeteer’s font-ready check waits for document fonts; it does not trigger content loading.
What if the text is visible in the PDF but cannot be selected?
That points to a PDF text-layer or extraction issue rather than content missing from the rendered page. Check the PDF visually as well as with search or selection.
