To have OBS retry its connection after an internet interruption, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect. Set the retry delay and maximum retries to suit the outages you expect. This tells OBS to retry its connection; it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the broadcast active or that viewers will see the same live event resume. Check YouTube’s auto-stop setting and test the full recovery path before relying on an unattended stream.

Set the retry delay and maximum retries. Choose a retry window that reflects the interruptions you want OBS to handle; do not assume a particular default, or that a large retry count can fix a persistent ISP or network failure.

Apply the settings and close the dialog. OBS can now retry its connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint when it loses the connection.
Check YouTube’s broadcast settings
OBS and YouTube handle different parts of recovery. OBS retries the encoder connection. YouTube controls the broadcast lifecycle and what appears on the viewer-facing live page. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the stream’s auto-stop setting: YouTube says this can stop a broadcast when the encoder stops. OBS reconnecting does not by itself establish that YouTube’s broadcast remained active.
Test the complete recovery path
Before depending on an unattended stream, test the same OBS and YouTube configuration you intend to use. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health.

Troubleshoot repeated drops or failed reconnects
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or insufficient capacity for the chosen bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Work through the likely cause rather than simply increasing retries.
-
Wi-Fi is unstable: Try wired Ethernet if possible. A cable can avoid Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or guarantee reconnection.

OBS reconnects but viewers do not see the live event resume: Check YouTube Studio and the auto-stop setting. OBS retrying its ingest connection and YouTube keeping the broadcast active are separate behaviors.
-
Retries run out during a long interruption: OBS may stop retrying after the configured attempts. There is no universal outage-duration limit established for all OBS and YouTube configurations, so test the settings you use rather than relying on a fixed time guarantee.
