If FaceTime says “Activation unsuccessful” or stays on “Waiting for activation,” first check your internet connection, software updates, date and time, and Apple’s service status. On iPhone, phone-number activation also depends on carrier SMS verification, which Apple says can take up to 24 hours. The right next step depends on whether you’re activating an iPhone number, an email address, or FaceTime on another Apple device.
What FaceTime activation errors mean
Apple lists alerts including “Waiting for activation,” “Activation unsuccessful,” “An error occurred during activation,” “Could not sign in. Please check your network connection,” and “Unable to contact the iMessage server. Try again.” They can point to a connection or Apple service problem, a software or date-and-time issue, an Apple Account sign-in problem, or—when activating an iPhone phone number—a delay or block in carrier SMS verification. Start with the checks that apply to every device
- Confirm the device has internet access over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Check Apple’s System Status for a FaceTime or related service issue.
- Install the latest software update available for the device.
- Check that the date, time, and time zone are correct; Apple recommends automatic date and time where available.
If these checks do not resolve activation, follow the steps for your device and the address or number you want to use.
Fix FaceTime activation on iPhone
Check the phone-number activation requirements
Activating an iPhone number uses SMS verification through your carrier. If iOS warns that activation SMS may incur a charge, allow it if you want to activate FaceTime with that number. Turn iMessage and FaceTime off, restart, and turn them on
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn off iMessage.
- Go to Settings > Apps > FaceTime and turn off FaceTime.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Return to those settings and turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.
Menu labels can vary with software versions. Use the current Settings search if you do not see the listed path.
Choose a phone number or verified email address
FaceTime can use an email address instead of your phone number. Check that the email address is correct and verified in your Apple Account. Apple also provides an online activation route at apple.co/IMFT-mac; follow its instructions and enter your number as directed if you are activating a phone number.

Escalate an unverified number after 24 hours
If your number still has no verification check after 24 hours, contact your carrier and ask whether your account can send and receive international SMS. If a spinning gear appears beside the number, Apple says you do not need to keep switching FaceTime off and on while verification is pending. Apple’s iPhone activation guidance

If an Apple message says your account is blocked, treat it as an account restriction rather than assuming the network is at fault. Fix FaceTime activation on iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro
- Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile-data internet access, check Apple System Status, install available software updates, and verify the date, time, and time zone.
- Go to account.apple.com and confirm you can sign in with the same Apple Account used for FaceTime on the device. Verify the email address there if it is not verified.
- Turn FaceTime off or sign out in the device’s FaceTime settings or app.
- Restart the device, then turn FaceTime on or sign in again with the same Apple Account.
- If activation still fails, check whether VPN or security software is blocking the connection. If you are unsure, try another network.

Check whether FaceTime is available where you are
FaceTime and FaceTime Audio are not available in every country or region, and availability can also depend on the network provider. If the service is unavailable for your location or provider, changing settings may not solve the problem. Apple notes these availability limits in its FaceTime call guidance.

If FaceTime activates but calls still fail
Successful activation and successful calls are separate issues. If FaceTime is on but you cannot make or receive calls, Apple recommends checking the following:
- On iPhone, make sure the intended mobile line or SIM is on and selected.
- Confirm FaceTime is enabled and Screen Time allows both FaceTime and Camera.
- Set date and time automatically, then restart the device and install available updates.
- If calls connect poorly, consider the connection: a slow network can cause connection alerts, choppy video, a black screen, or dropped calls.
