The more useful question is what happens to the time and attention saved: are developers specifying work more carefully, testing and reviewing generated code, and making better engineering decisions? The evidence suggests those outcomes can diverge—and should be measured separately.
Does AI coding assistance make developers faster?
A controlled task showed a sizable speed gain
In a 2023 Microsoft Research controlled experiment, developers asked to implement a JavaScript HTTP server with GitHub Copilot completed the task 55.8% faster than the control group, according to the researchers. That is a result for one defined task under controlled conditions, not a forecast for an entire software project or a general estimate for every developer.
Workplace trials add context, not one universal number
Microsoft Research also reports randomized field experiments involving software developers at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company. Those settings are closer to day-to-day work than a single lab task, but the available summary does not provide one pooled effect size. It would be misleading to turn these trials into a single promised productivity gain.
Does writing less code mean producing better code?
Speed, code volume, and quality are different outcomes. A 2024 randomized code-quality experiment reported by GitHub involved 202 developers, each with at least five years of experience, writing API endpoints for a web server. Half were assigned Copilot and half were instructed not to use AI.

- Copilot users had a 53.2% greater likelihood of passing all 10 unit tests in that study.
- Blind reviewers found fewer readability errors; Copilot users wrote 13.6% more lines on average without readability problems.
These are study-specific results reported by GitHub, not independent replications or a guarantee that AI-generated code will be correct or maintainable elsewhere. The line-count result also complicates the idea that assistance necessarily means less code: an assistant may change how code is produced without reducing the amount that ends up in a solution.
What might engineers do with less implementation work?
GitHub’s documentation describes Copilot capabilities for writing and understanding code, asking questions about a codebase, reviewing changes, and assigning tasks. Those features make it possible to delegate more routine implementation or exploration. They do not establish how much engineering time is actually transferred from typing to review, testing, design, or integration.
That shift depends on the work and on team habits. A developer still has to decide whether a suggestion fits the system’s requirements, inspect its assumptions, run appropriate tests, and resolve integration problems. If an assistant makes a first draft cheap, the limiting work may move toward framing the task well and deciding whether the result is safe to keep. If a team does not reserve time for verification, faster drafting can instead mean faster accumulation of unexamined code.

A GitHub research article quotes one study participant, attributed only as a Senior Software Engineer: “(With Copilot) I have to think less, and when I have to think it’s the fun stuff. It sets off a little spark that makes coding more fun and more efficient.” This is a qualitative comment from one participant, not a measured outcome for developers generally.

Do usefulness, enjoyment, and trust rise together?
Not necessarily. A Microsoft Research workplace study combined surveys, a randomized controlled trial, and a three-week diary study. Its summary says developers came to see the tools as more useful and enjoyable after introduction and sustained use, while their views about the trustworthiness of generated code remained unchanged. Liking a tool or finding it helpful is not the same as having confidence that its output is correct.
A 2026 longitudinal preprint by the study authors describes a “productivity-experience paradox.” It reports that 84% of participants reported productivity improvement at both study time points. Among matched participants, however, the share reporting worsened developer experience in at least one dimension rose from 14% to 27%. Because this is a preprint, the finding should be treated as emerging evidence, not settled consensus. It also shows why perceived productivity and the experience of doing the work should not be collapsed into one score.

How can a team tell whether AI is helping?
GitHub’s discussion of developer productivity uses the SPACE framework: satisfaction and well-being, performance, activity, communication and collaboration, and efficiency and flow. The practical implication is to use more than one signal. Suggestions accepted, lines added, or a developer’s sense of speed can each describe part of the work, but none alone establishes that software outcomes improved.
| Dimension | What a team can examine |
|---|---|
| Satisfaction and well-being | Whether developers find the work manageable and worthwhile, and whether AI reduces or adds frustration. |
| Performance | Whether changes meet requirements, pass relevant tests, and remain understandable to reviewers. |
| Activity | What work is being completed, without treating more code or more accepted suggestions as success by themselves. |
| Communication and collaboration | Whether handoffs, shared understanding, and review coordination improve or become harder. |
| Efficiency and flow | Whether work moves with fewer interruptions, while accounting for time spent checking, repairing, and integrating suggestions. |
For a useful comparison, assess assistants or AI-assisted and non-AI workflows on the same kinds of tasks and codebase contexts. Track completion time alongside functional test results, readability, human review and repair effort, confidence in the output, flow, and team collaboration. The cited evidence does not establish comparative scores among vendors, and these measures should not be collapsed into a single claim that AI “makes developers productive.”
