Dark Souls II is considered the weakest Souls game by some players because it feels different from the original in its world design, combat and progression—and because some encounters, particularly in Scholar of the First Sin, strike critics as crowded or unfair. That is a reaction, not a settled consensus: the sequel has defenders, and Hidetaka Miyazaki later praised it as a project that helped the series develop.
What do critics object to?
The recurring complaint is less that Dark Souls II is difficult than that its difficulty and design feel different from what some players valued in the first Dark Souls. Retrospective criticism commonly points to the world and level design, combat changes, boss encounters, perceived cheapness, and the health loss and recovery systems. These are criticisms players make, not objective verdicts that every player shares. Den of Geek’s 2024 retrospective describes the dispute and the objections behind the game’s reputation.

For returning players, the issue can be a mismatch of expectations: a sequel carrying the same name and broad challenge-oriented identity does not necessarily reproduce the particular structure or feel they wanted. The available accounts establish that these differences are frequently criticized, but do not provide a feature-by-feature technical comparison that would settle whether one game’s design is better.

Players who see an encounter as a learnable test may find it satisfying; players who read it as crowded, poorly signposted or punishing may experience frustration instead. That distinction helps explain why the argument is about tuning and fairness as much as raw difficulty.

Director Yui Tanimura said the team’s use of “accessible” did not mean making the game easier. He described the aim as streamlining tedious parts while retaining difficulty, and said balance and enemy placement were central responsibilities. Those comments explain the intended approach, but cannot establish that every player found the result fair. Tanimura’s 2013 interview with Game Informer discusses that design goal.
Miyazaki later described FromSoftware’s broader target as deaths players can understand and learn from: “When players are killed, and they can understand why they were killed in an instance, and it feels justified – ‘Okay, yeah, that makes sense’ – that’s the game design we’re trying to achieve.” That is a statement of intent, not evidence that Dark Souls II always meets it. Game Informer’s 2024 interview with Miyazaki gives the context for his view of difficulty.

Does Scholar of the First Sin change the experience?
Yes. Scholar of the First Sin is not simply a presentation update: producer Atsuo Yoshimura said it revised enemy placement across areas, improved enemy AI and added enemies in places players had treated as safer. He also said enemies could pursue players farther and that the number appearing together could make Scholar somewhat harder. So a complaint about enemy density should be tied to the edition being discussed, rather than assumed to describe every release in the same way. Yoshimura’s 2015 interview with GameSpot explains the changes.

That is the producer’s account; players may still judge the changes differently. For more on the revision and its reception, see Game Developer’s 2015 interview with Yoshimura.

Can a progression mechanic be both helpful and frustrating?
A contemporary TIME review described enemies disappearing after repeated defeats. The reviewer saw a tradeoff: fewer enemies can make a repeatedly traveled route less dangerous, but the mechanic can also encourage cautious soul-hoarding and anxiety about moving ahead underprepared. That is one reviewer’s interpretation, not a universal response to the system. TIME’s 2014 piece on enemy despawning lays out both sides.

It became part of the debate, but it does not by itself explain the game’s reputation. Yui Tanimura directed Dark Souls II; retrospective coverage also names Tomohiro Shibuya as a director. Miyazaki did not direct it, but Yoshimura said he supervised and commented on changes. Yoshimura acknowledged that some fans questioned whether the game was the “real Dark Souls” without Miyazaki directing, then rejected that conclusion: “The answer is — to me, it’s no. It’s sharing the same DNA. It’s from the same franchise.” His interview with Game Developer captures both the concern and his response.

Is its reputation fair?
It is fair to say Dark Souls II is divisive and that some players find its design a poor fit with what they wanted from a direct sequel. It is not fair to turn that preference into a claim that everyone considers the game bad or that its most criticized encounters describe every edition equally.

Miyazaki later called Dark Souls II “a really great project for us,” saying it generated connections and ideas that carried forward through the series. A 2024 retrospective also connects its experimentation to later series ideas such as world scale, boss distribution, build options and powerstancing; those connections are the retrospective’s interpretation of influence, not a claim that Miyazaki specifically credited each feature. The game can disappoint players seeking a closer continuation of the first Dark Souls and still matter as an experiment in the series’ evolution. Den of Geek’s 2024 retrospective discusses Miyazaki’s reassessment and the sequel’s legacy.
