fetch() does not impose a special 10-second delay on HEAD requests. A long pause before response headers arrive can come from connection setup, server processing, redirects, or a CORS preflight. The cause cannot be identified from the method and delay alone; first determine which runtime is making the request, then inspect its request sequence and timing.
What the delay means
A Fetch promise resolves when a response is available—typically once the response headers arrive. A slow resolution therefore points to time spent before those headers, not necessarily to downloading or processing a response body. An HTTP error status still gives Fetch a response; it does not, by itself, make the promise reject. MDN’s Fetch guide explains this response behavior.

There is no universal Fetch timeout or standard 10-second wait specific to HEAD established by the cited documentation. Without the runtime, endpoint, and a timing trace, the exact cause remains unknown.
Which mobile runtime is making the request?
Browser JavaScript
For a browser request, inspect the browser’s network panel and identify every request associated with the call. Cross-origin requests are subject to CORS; depending on the request’s headers and other conditions, the browser may send an OPTIONS preflight before the HEAD request. HEAD is an allowed method for a simple request, but the method alone does not guarantee that a request avoids preflight. React Native
Do not assume browser behavior if the call comes from a React Native app. React Native documents networking constraints and platform-specific behavior, including issues involving redirects and cookies. Record whether the affected device is running iOS or Android and the relevant app and operating-system versions, then use the framework’s networking documentation as context for interpreting the trace.
How to locate the ten seconds
- Record the environment. Note browser JavaScript or React Native, the browser or app version, the operating system, and whether the issue occurs on iOS, Android, or both.
- Capture the full request sequence. Look for
OPTIONS,HEAD, and any redirect responses and follow-up requests. Fetch follows redirects by default, so a redirect may add another request. The WHATWG Fetch Standard describes this processing. - Check whether CORS preflight applies. For a cross-origin browser request, inspect its headers and other request conditions. If the trace shows
OPTIONSbeforeHEAD, measure how long each takes rather than attributing the whole wait toHEAD. - Compare client and server timestamps. Establish when the client starts the call, when the server receives the request, and when the server sends response headers. If the server receives it promptly but sends headers much later, investigate server-side application or upstream processing. If it reaches the server late, investigate the client, connection, or intervening network.
- Compare like with like. Use the same URL, method, headers, and network conditions on the affected mobile runtime and a desktop control. Check whether a redirect changes the destination’s origin.

Should you replace HEAD with GET?
Not solely because a mobile call takes about ten seconds. First establish whether the wait occurs before the request reaches the server, during an OPTIONS preflight, while following a redirect, or while the server is preparing response headers. Replacing the method without locating the delay may leave its cause untouched.
