YouTube supports 4K (2160p) at 60 fps for live-stream ingest and can archive 4K streams, but that does not guarantee a 2160p60 option on every replay. First confirm what your encoder actually sent; then compare any local recording with the replay and check the quality menu on another supported browser or device. Those checks help separate a source problem from a playback-compatibility issue, but the cause of a particular replay cannot be identified without its stream and device details.
Why 4K 60fps may be missing
There are two different stages to check: the video YouTube received and the version your browser or device can play. A stream configured for 4K60 may not have actually been sent at 3840×2160 and 60 fps. Even when the source is 4K60, playback quality can vary by connection, screen or player size, browser format support, and device capability. YouTube does not promise that every replay will expose a 2160p60 option.

YouTube lists 4K/2160p at 60 fps among its live encoder settings and says it transcodes live streams into different output formats. Its playback guidance also notes that some high-quality formats may be unavailable on devices that do not support newer compression technology such as VP9. A missing option on one device therefore does not, by itself, establish that the archive lacks a 4K rendition.

Check the source and replay in order
- Verify the actual encoder output. In your encoder or source recording, check that the output was 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Do not rely only on the intended setting; review the encoder configuration and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health information for signs that the stream was sent at a lower resolution or frame rate.
- Compare a local recording, if you have one. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Inspect it to see whether it is actually 4K60. If it is not, the limitation was already present before replay playback. If it is, that points toward checking YouTube’s replay rendition and the playback device next. This comparison is diagnostic reasoning, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
- Test the replay on another browser and capable device. Open the quality menu in a current supported browser, then compare it on another device that can play high-quality video. If a higher option appears elsewhere, the first device, browser, or playback conditions may be limiting the menu. YouTube does not specify that every device supports every format.
- Check whether the archive exists and how long the stream ran. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including 1440p and 2160p streams, and recommends a local backup. Streams over 12 hours may not be captured. That duration warning concerns whether an archive is captured; it does not explain why an existing replay lacks a 2160p60 choice.
Check whether the ingest settings were appropriate
YouTube’s current English live-encoder guidance lists 4K/2160p at 60 fps. For that setting, it recommends 35 Mbps for H.264 and lists a 10–40 Mbps bitrate range for AV1 and H.265. These are encoder recommendations, not evidence of the settings used for your particular stream. Compare your actual codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate with the guidance rather than assuming that choosing a 4K60 preset proves the output matched it.

YouTube’s listed live-stream video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS include H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Changing encoders is not an established general fix for a missing replay option: first determine whether the source was 4K60 and whether the restriction follows the replay across devices.
What YouTube’s archive guidance does—and does not—say
YouTube’s archive instructions say streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and specifically include 1440p and 2160p streams. They also recommend making a local archive. This establishes that 4K live archives are supported; it does not promise that every recording will have every resolution-and-frame-rate combination available in the replay quality menu. YouTube’s published guidance does not give a guaranteed wait time for a particular rendition to appear, so avoid treating a specific delay as a universal rule.

Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The local recording is below 4K60. | Check the source and encoder output settings, then review the stream-health information. The replay cannot preserve 4K60 if the stream was not sent in that format. |
| The local recording is 4K60, but the replay menu is not. | Try the replay on another supported browser or capable device. Compare the quality menu across devices before concluding the archive has no 4K rendition. |
| The replay offers a high resolution, but not 60 fps as a separate choice. | Check the local recording and actual encoder output, then compare the replay on another device. YouTube’s documentation supports 4K60 ingest but does not guarantee a distinct 2160p60 menu entry on every replay. |
| No archive appears. | Check the stream duration. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured; this is separate from a missing quality option in an existing replay. |
When you need to keep a YouTube stream running

It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so a home computer does not need to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.
