Which Dublin–Galway trains are included in the pilot?
The pilot timetable lists three departures each way per day. It is not a trolley on every Dublin–Galway train.
Monday to Saturday
- From Heuston: 07:35, 09:25 and 11:30.
- From Galway: 11:05, 13:05 and 15:05.
Sundays
- From Heuston: 08:00, 10:30 and 11:40.
- From Galway: 11:00, 13:40 and 15:00.
The 07:35 Friday departure from Heuston involves a change at Athlone. Timetables and pilot coverage can change, so confirm the service on Irish Rail’s catering page close to your journey.

Why isn’t catering available on more services?
Irish Rail says the existing catering on Dublin–Cork and Dublin–Belfast was provided within the Public Service Obligation (PSO) funding envelope available under its contract with the National Transport Authority. The Galway trial is different: it is a commercial arrangement without PSO funding, intended to test whether catering on a wider set of intercity services can be viable commercially. Sambos.ie, an Irish company, operates the pilot. Irish Rail said it might extend the trial to more services or routes during its six-month period in its announcement of the Dublin–Galway catering pilot.
In an October 1, 2026 interview on The Claire Byrne Show, Iarnród Éireann Corporate Communications Manager Barry Kenny pointed to the previous operator’s inability to continue after COVID-era disruption, higher costs when catering was tendered, and limits on available NTA funding. - Check the specific departure in Irish Rail’s current catering listing, especially for Enterprise and Galway services.
- For a listed Galway pilot train, bring a payment card; the pilot is card-only.
- Irish Rail lists free water refill stations at a number of stations. A refill point can help with water before boarding, but it is not a replacement for onboard food service.
