Compare the original, edited export, and shared copy on the same device and playback setup to find where the change first appears.
Compare the versions under the same listening conditions
Start with three files or versions: the original clip in Photos, the edited or exported video, and the copy received after sharing. Play each using the same headphones or speaker, volume, and spatial-audio settings. This helps distinguish a change in the file from a change in how it is being played.

- Original: Play the unedited clip in Photos.
- Edited export: Play the file produced by the editing or export step.
- Received copy: Save or obtain the version that was shared, then play it using the same setup.
Note where the sound first differs. If it changes in Photos after an edit, check Audio Mix. If only the received copy differs, compare that actual file with the edited export; the available Apple guidance does not establish how any particular third-party sharing service processes audio.
Check the recording mode
Apple says iPhone 16 or later can record video in Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono. Models earlier than iPhone 16 record in Stereo. The modes can produce different channel behavior and listening impressions:

Apple describes Spatial Audio recording on iPhone 16 or later as capturing more realistic, immersive video audio that can be edited later in Photos. Recording mode is one possible reason a clip may sound different from another; it does not by itself show that editing or sharing altered the audio. Check whether Photos Audio Mix changed the balance
For supported Spatial Audio recordings, Photos offers Audio Mix controls. Apple Developer Documentation says the feature treats speech as foreground and ambience as background, with creative rendering styles that adjust the mix. If voices seem more prominent or surroundings less prominent after an edit, check whether Audio Mix was applied and compare the edited result with the original.

This is a change in how foreground speech and background ambience are balanced; it is different from a general claim that every Photos edit changes audio. Apple documents the feature in Editing Spatial Audio with an audio mix.
Rule out playback settings and equipment
Spatial or spatialized playback can make audio seem wider or more immersive on supported equipment. A clip can therefore sound different on another phone, pair of headphones, or speaker even when the file has not changed. Repeat the comparison with the same playback device and settings.

Do not mistake iMovie HDR for an audio control
iMovie’s HDR option concerns the video’s dynamic range: Apple’s sharing instructions describe turning HDR on for an HDR export or off for SDR. The cited guidance does not establish that this setting changes the sound, so it is not a supported audio fix. Apple documents the video workflow in Edit HDR video recorded on iPhone or iPad.

What to conclude when only the shared copy sounds different
Compare the received file directly with the editor’s export, using matched playback conditions. If the difference exists only in the received copy, the comparison identifies the stage at which it appears, but not what processing caused it. The available sources do not document audio conversion behavior for individual sharing apps, so avoid assuming that a particular service compressed, downmixed, or changed the loudness of the clip.
