Open the movie app and look for its Cast or AirPlay control. If the app and your TV or streaming device support the same connection method, select the receiver and start playback. If there is no casting control, try screen mirroring only when both devices support it—or use the streaming service’s TV app directly.
How do I watch free streaming movies on my TV?
First check whether the TV already has the service’s app. For example, Pluto TV offers free movies through its apps and browser; its device listing includes Android mobile, Apple TV, Fire TV and browser access. Available devices and services can vary by region, so check the current Pluto TV device listing.

If you want to play a movie from your phone, casting support depends on both the app and the TV or receiver. A smart TV does not necessarily support every phone app or casting protocol. Roku, for instance, requires the service to support casting and its matching app to be installed on the Roku device as well as the phone. See Roku’s app-casting instructions.
Choose casting, AirPlay, or screen mirroring

Casting a selected video is not the same as mirroring the entire screen. With casting, the receiver plays the chosen content, and Roku says you can use the phone for other tasks or turn it off after playback starts. Mirroring shows the phone display and keeps the phone involved in playback. Neither route is universal: check support for your specific app, phone and receiver.

Cast with Google Cast
Google lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12.0 or later mobile devices, and Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), or a TV with Google Cast as supported endpoints. The phone and receiver must share a Wi-Fi network, and the streaming app must support Google Cast. Follow Google’s Cast setup guidance.
- Connect the phone and Google Cast receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open a Cast-enabled movie app. If you do not see its Cast button at first, begin playback and check again.
- Tap the Cast icon and select the TV or receiver from the list.
- Confirm that the video is playing on the TV. Use the app or phone to control playback.
On iPhone or iPad, Google says iOS 14 and later requires Local Network access for discovering Cast-enabled devices. Allow that access for the streaming app when prompted.

Cast a movie from Tubi
Tubi documents Chromecast casting, AirPlay and a separate Tubi Linking option. Its mobile-to-TV guide covers the following routes.

- Connect the phone and Chromecast-compatible TV or receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Tubi and tap its Cast icon. If it is not visible, start a video and look again.
- Select the receiver, choose a movie, and press Play.
AirPlay
- Connect an iPhone or iPad and an Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Tubi, tap its Cast menu, and choose AirPlay.
- Select the receiver and start the movie.
Tubi Linking
If Tubi is installed on both the phone and TV, you can use Tubi Linking instead of sending the video through casting or mirroring. Tubi says this option is supported on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Google TV. The service recommends linking for Tubi and says it can be more reliable than casting or mirroring; that is Tubi’s guidance, not a general performance guarantee for other services.

Use casting or mirroring with Roku
Cast from a supported app
Roku app casting works only when the streaming app supports it and the matching app is installed on both the phone and Roku. Connect both to the same wireless network, open the service on the phone, tap its Cast control and select the Roku. The TV app may open automatically, and the Cast control may not appear until playback begins. Roku’s casting help explains the requirement.
Mirror a compatible phone
Roku documents mirroring from compatible Android and Windows devices. Apple devices use AirPlay with compatible Roku models. Android menu names and steps differ by phone, and Roku model support is not universal. Check the device at Settings > System > About, then consult the model’s guidance and Roku’s screen-mirroring support page.

Why can’t I see my TV in the Cast list?
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm app support. The Cast icon is app-specific; having a smart TV alone does not mean a particular service can cast to it.
- Check the Wi-Fi network. Put the phone and receiver on the same network. A guest network or network isolation setting can prevent them from discovering each other.
- Update the app and receiver. Google recommends the latest version of a Google Cast-enabled app.
- Allow local-network discovery on iOS. If prompted, grant the streaming app Local Network access. Tubi also identifies this permission as relevant to device discovery.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the app supports your receiver and that your exact TV or streaming-device model supports the casting or mirroring method you are trying.
- Restart the devices. Restart the phone and TV or receiver; if needed, restart the router and reconnect both devices to the same network. Roku includes restarts and reconnecting to the same network among its troubleshooting steps.
What if the app has no Cast button?
Check whether the service has a TV app and use that if available. Otherwise, screen mirroring may work if the phone and receiver support the same mirroring route. Mirroring shows the whole phone display rather than sending only the selected video, and your phone must stay active during playback. Support varies by operating system, phone model and receiver model, so verify the exact devices before relying on it.
Do you need another device?
Only consider buying a receiver if the TV does not already provide a compatible option. Google lists Google TV Streamer (4K) as a Google Cast endpoint, but the right choice depends on whether your phone, services and TV connection are compatible. Before buying any receiver, check built-in TV support, the TV’s HDMI and power requirements, the services available in your region, and the receiver’s current specifications and price. No particular device is required when your TV already supports the method your app uses.
