An international remittance can be delayed at the sending provider, an intermediary bank, the recipient’s bank or payout agent, or during an additional review. A “sent” status does not necessarily mean the recipient’s account has been credited. Check the availability date on the confirmation, then ask the sending provider to trace the transfer if that date has passed.

Where a remittance delay can happen

A transfer moves through more than one institution and processing stage. The sender’s provider may have accepted it without completing processing; an intermediary may still be handling it; or the receiving bank or payout agent may have the funds but not yet have credited or released them. A provider or partner-bank outage or scheduled maintenance can also delay or cancel a transfer. Ask the sender’s provider which stage the payment has reached rather than treating an account debit or “sent” status as proof of delivery.

Weekends, holidays and cut-off times

Providers, banks and payment networks do not necessarily share the same working days. A transfer submitted after a provider’s cut-off, or around a public holiday in the sending or receiving country, may not start or resume processing until a later business day. DBS/POSB describes business-day processing, destination holidays and corridor-specific next-working-day behavior for its service; those details should not be assumed to apply to other providers or routes. Check the calendars and cut-off rules that apply to your specific transfer.

Recipient details that do not match

A misspelled or mismatched name, missing field, incorrect account number or IBAN, or wrong bank identifier can prevent a transfer from being credited. Depending on the provider and destination, the payment may be held for clarification or returned. Confirm the recipient’s name and payment details against the receiving institution’s records, and check whether the destination requires a payment purpose or other corridor-specific information.

Intermediary and receiving-institution processing

Money may have left the sending provider but still be awaiting processing by an intermediary, the beneficiary’s bank, or a payout agent. “Sent” describes a stage in the journey; it does not by itself establish that the recipient can access the money.

Compliance or fraud checks

Anti-fraud, anti-money-laundering, sanctions and other regulatory checks can delay a payment. The provider may request more information from the sender and may not be able to share every detail of a review. Respond only to a request made through the provider’s verified channel, and provide only the documentation it requests. DBS/POSB states that additional anti-fraud or anti-money-laundering checks may cause processing delays.

Exceptional events

War, civil unrest, natural disasters and unforeseen government restrictions are examples cited in U.S. regulatory commentary in connection with exceptions to certain remittance-transfer requirements. They are not a universal legal framework, and their application depends on the circumstances and applicable law.

What to do when the transfer has not arrived

  1. Read the confirmation. Find the disclosed availability date, transaction reference, payout method and destination currency. Check the recipient details exactly as entered. The date the sender’s account was debited is not necessarily the date the recipient should expect funds to be available.
  2. Account for calendars and cut-offs. Check the sending provider’s cut-off and the relevant business-day and holiday calendars at both ends. Timing is provider- and corridor-specific. For example, Emirates NBD says international transfers usually take two to three working days to be credited; that is its stated usual timeframe, not an industry-wide guarantee or independent performance measure.
  3. Ask the sending provider to trace the payment. Give it the transaction reference and ask whether the transfer is pending, returned, held for information, or delivered to the receiving institution. Ask whether it needs anything from the sender. Do not send a second transfer until the original’s status is clear.
  4. Check the details with the receiving bank or payout agent. Confirm the account holder name, account number or IBAN, bank routing or SWIFT/BIC identifier, and any local requirements. If the sending provider says it sent the payment but the recipient’s bank cannot locate it, ask the provider for its payment confirmation or SWIFT copy, then ask the bank to search using that document. Emirates NBD recommends sharing an e-advise or SWIFT payment copy when a receiving bank cannot credit a transfer; this may help the bank locate it but is not a guaranteed fix.
  5. Handle information requests securely. If the provider asks for documents, contact it through its official, verified channel and submit only what it requests. Do not guess why a review is taking place or send identity documents to an unverified contact. Some provider workflows may cancel a transfer if requested information is not supplied.
  6. Escalate once the disclosed date has passed. Tell the sending provider the availability date, amount, transaction reference and intended recipient, and summarize what each institution has told you. Ask how to file a formal complaint or, where applicable, a notice of error. Keep the confirmation and the provider’s replies.

How to think about the status you receive

  • Pending: Ask which stage is incomplete, whether a cut-off or holiday affects processing, and whether the provider needs information from the sender.
  • Returned: Ask where the funds are, how and when they will be returned, and whether fees or exchange-rate differences affect the amount returned. Confirm corrected recipient details before deciding whether to send again.
  • Held for information or review: Ask what documentation or action is required, and provide it only through the provider’s verified channel.
  • Delivered or sent to the receiving institution: Ask the sender’s provider for trace documentation or a payment confirmation. Give it to the receiving bank or payout agent and ask them to search for the payment and explain any remaining crediting step.

What U.S. senders can do about a qualifying error

For a remittance transfer covered by U.S. Regulation E, failure to make the funds available by the date disclosed to the sender can qualify as an error, subject to exceptions. These include certain unforeseeable extraordinary circumstances and necessary investigations, as well as specified cases involving a sender-provided incorrect account number or recipient-institution identifier when additional regulatory conditions are met. A request for status alone is generally not an error under the rule, except when funds were not made available by the disclosed date.

Under 12 CFR § 1005.33, a qualifying notice of error generally must reach the provider within 180 days after the disclosed availability date. It must identify the sender, recipient and transfer and explain the suspected error. The provider generally has 90 days to investigate and determine whether an error occurred, and must report its results within three business days after completing the investigation. The remedy depends on the error’s type and cause. These are U.S.-specific procedures, not rules for every country or legal advice. If you are outside the United States, ask your provider or relevant consumer-protection authority about the complaint and dispute process in your jurisdiction.
