That mix can make the app feel less like a stream of friends’ posts, even though the available evidence does not establish that users broadly feel Instagram has become less social.
Why am I seeing suggested posts instead of posts from friends?
Because Instagram’s main Feed can combine posts from accounts you follow with suggested posts and other content. Recommendations may come from accounts you have not chosen to follow. Meta described this mix in its 2022 explanation of Instagram Feed; its Recommendation Guidelines also distinguish recommended content from posts by accounts a person chose to follow.

Recommendations are personalized. Meta says people’s interactions with content have long influenced what appears in Feed. The company announced that interactions with Meta AI would also shape content and ad recommendations after December 16, 2025. In June 2026, Meta announced another expansion: it would use information businesses already share with Meta to personalize Feed and AI responses as well as ads, initially in the US and some other countries starting in July 2026, with more countries to follow. These are Meta’s descriptions of its systems and rollout—not an independent audit of which signals affected a particular person’s feed.

What has changed in Instagram’s feed?
Meta’s product announcements show an evolution in both feed controls and personalization inputs. They help explain why someone may see more system-selected material than expected in a friends-first feed, but they do not prove that recommendations caused any one person’s experience or that every account sees the same mix.

- 2022: Meta described Feed as a mix of followed-account posts, suggested posts, and more, and introduced Following and Favorites as chronological views for selected accounts.
- 2024: Meta announced a tool to reset suggested content across Explore, Reels, and Feed.
- 2025: Meta said interactions with Meta AI would begin informing content and ad recommendations after December 16, 2025.
- 2026: Meta announced the planned use of activity businesses share with it to personalize Feed and AI responses, with an initial rollout in the US and some other countries in July.
One statistic about recommendations is easy to misread. Meta reported that 75% of Instagram recommendations in the US came from original posts in Q4 2025, a 10-percentage-point increase. That figure describes the composition of recommendations, according to Meta; it is not the share of all Feed posts from friends, nor a measure of how social users feel.
How to get a more followed-accounts-focused feed
Instagram offers several ways to influence what you see. Availability and labels can vary by account, region, and app version, so check the current app if a path or option differs.

Switch to Following or Favorites
Meta describes Following and Favorites as chronological feeds: Following shows posts from accounts you follow, while Favorites focuses on a list you choose. In the app, open Instagram’s feed controls and select the view you want; the exact control placement may change.

- Open your profile.
- Tap More options, then Content preferences.
- Choose Reset suggested content and follow the prompts.
Meta says recommendations personalize again over time based on the content and accounts you interact with. It also suggests reviewing your following list, since followed accounts affect what appears.

Give feedback on individual suggestions
On a recommended post, open its menu and choose Interested or Not interested, where available. This gives feedback about that recommendation rather than switching the entire feed to a chronological view.
Use Hidden Words
Meta describes Hidden Words as a way to hide content containing specified words or phrases in captions. Use it when particular terms or topics are what make recommendations feel unwelcome.

Is Instagram moving away from social interaction?
Not in a simple, one-directional way. Alongside recommendations, Meta announced features framed around connection, including reposts, a map, and a Friends tab in Reels. The Friends tab can show public content friends interacted with and suggestions from Blends. These features do not make the main Feed a followed-accounts-only feed, but they complicate the claim that Instagram has only moved away from social interaction.
