Choose the Instagram profile, what information and date range to include, where to save it, and the available format and media-quality options before creating the export. If you want copies sent to another service instead of a local archive, use Instagram’s transfer option.
Download your Instagram information to your device
Meta moved Instagram’s download controls into Accounts Center. In the app, open Settings, go to Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, and select Download your information. Meta says Accounts Center is available from the Settings menu on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger (Meta, October 17, 2023).

Labels and placement can differ across app versions and platforms. If the path does not match what you see, look for Download your information within Accounts Center. Meta’s browser guide provides this sequence for creating an export:
- Choose the Instagram profile whose information you want.
- Select all available information or choose the information to include.
- Select Download to Device.
- Choose the date range, format, and media quality offered in the controls.
- Review the selections and create the files.
The chosen information and date range determine what the archive covers, so check both before you submit the request. The Missouri Secretary of State’s browser guide uses HTML and high media quality as its suggested settings; these are that guide’s recommendations, not a definitive current Meta recommendation. HTML is a reasonable choice if you want an archive to browse. Use the descriptions shown in Instagram’s current controls when choosing among formats or quality settings; available labels may vary.

Choose between a download and a transfer
A download creates a local copy for you to retrieve. A transfer sends selected Instagram photos and videos to another service. Meta describes Accounts Center as a place to manage information across its apps, and says Instagram users can transfer photos and videos to other services (Meta, October 17, 2023).

Meta has cited a third-party photo-book service as an example of a destination for transferred photos and videos. A transfer is useful when you want media at another service; it is not a substitute for downloading a full local account-information archive.

What the export includes
The information included depends on what you select and the date range you request. Meta’s 2020 explanation of its data-access tools described information beyond photos and videos, including interactions and categories assigned to accounts to help suggest Explore content (Meta, March 30, 2020). That is a historical description, not a guarantee that a current export contains any particular category. Check the present export controls for the information Instagram offers for your account.

Export preparation can take time, and published estimates differ. The Associated Press reported in January 2025 that Instagram’s help page said a download link may take up to 30 days to arrive; a Missouri Secretary of State guide says collection may take up to 14 days. These are different reported estimates, not a guaranteed turnaround. Check the notification method selected when you made the request and follow the current in-product notice (Associated Press, January 2025; Missouri Secretary of State guide).

Both sources report that the download link remains available for four days. Retrieve the archive promptly when it is ready. The AP also reports that Instagram requires a password to download and access the files.

After downloading, save the archive somewhere you can find it on your computer. The Missouri Secretary of State’s records-management guide recommends saving downloaded social-media records to an appropriate place on a computer. An external drive is an optional second storage location if you want another copy; it is not required to request or download the Instagram export.
