Why Influencers Should Live Stream on YouTube

YouTube Live can make questions, demonstrations, and events more interactive. Learn when it fits an influencer’s content, how to start, and what monetization depends on.

YouTube Live is worth considering when your content benefits from real-time questions, demonstrations, events, or spontaneous conversation. It gives viewers a way to interact with you and one another as something happens, but it does not guarantee more reach, engagement, or income. Treat live streaming as a format to test when it fits your subject and audience—not as a growth shortcut.

What YouTube Live adds to an influencer’s content mix

A recorded video is edited and published for viewers to watch on their own time. A live stream adds a shared, real-time experience: viewers can ask questions and respond in live chat while you teach, demonstrate, host an event, or react. YouTube describes this as a way to build a deeper sense of community between creator and viewer. That is the platform’s rationale for Live, not independent proof that every live stream improves engagement.

Live can also reveal what your audience wants to discuss. Questions may help shape a future video, while a demonstration lets viewers ask for clarification as you go. Those benefits depend on the format, the audience, and your ability to make the conversation useful.

When going live makes sense

Choose a live format when the value comes partly from being there together. YouTube’s suggested formats include answering viewer questions, teaching a class, hosting a workshop, traveling, giving a house tour, reviewing food, crafting, and gaming.

  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  • Use a live Q&A when your audience has recurring questions and you can answer them in context.
  • Teach or demonstrate live when viewers benefit from watching a process and asking for a closer look or explanation.
  • Cover an event or experience when the moment itself matters and live audience participation adds something.
  • Choose a recorded video instead when the material needs careful editing, a polished script, or no audience interaction to work well.

You do not need to make every upload live. A sustainable schedule and a clear reason for each stream matter more than going live simply to fill a calendar.

How to start a YouTube live stream

YouTube documents three routes: mobile, webcam, and encoder. The right one depends on what you are broadcasting; a computer webcam is required only for the webcam route. YouTube’s setup guidance says your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check your account’s current access and YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before announcing a stream, since availability and rules can change.

  1. Pick the route that fits. Use mobile for a stream from a phone, webcam for a computer-based stream, or an encoder for a production setup using encoding software or hardware. A USB webcam is an optional purchase for the computer webcam path, not a requirement for mobile or encoder streaming.
  2. Prepare the stream’s purpose and audience plan. Decide what viewers will see, whether you will take questions, and how you will handle chat. For a workshop or Q&A, outline the key points so interaction does not leave the session without direction.
  3. Open YouTube’s live creation flow for your chosen route. Follow the on-screen setup for mobile, webcam, or encoder and confirm the stream details before going live. The exact interface can vary by device and account access.
  4. Go live and host the session. Explain what viewers can expect, watch chat where practical, and keep the stream focused on its stated purpose.
  5. Review what happened afterward. Consider whether viewers’ questions, the pacing, and the format justified the time. Use that to decide whether to repeat the stream, adjust it, or return to recorded content.

For a computer webcam stream, a computer with a webcam is required. YouTube also supports mobile and encoder routes, so no single camera or computer purchase is necessary for every creator. The available guidance cited here does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or encoder preset; use the settings recommended for your specific route and current YouTube setup rather than treating one configuration as mandatory.

Can influencers make money from YouTube Live?

Potentially, if the channel and creator qualify for the relevant features. YouTube describes live ads, channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers as possible monetization routes, and Shopping can let fans browse and buy products shown on a stream. Eligibility differs by feature, and access to a feature does not guarantee earnings.

YouTube reports that creators who chose automatic live mid-roll ads saw an average of over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn them on. This was YouTube’s comparison across 207 countries in January 2024, not a forecast for an individual channel. YouTube also says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Its ad mechanisms may pause ads for some viewers during high-engagement moments or for viewers sending certain paid interactions, but ads can still affect the viewing experience.

Think of monetization as one possible benefit, not the reason to promise a result. Feature eligibility, audience response, and whether ads or paid interactions suit the stream all affect what a creator may earn.

Where an always-on stream fits—and where it does not

A live Q&A, workshop, event, or camera-led broadcast depends on you being present to host it. A cloud service that loops uploaded videos is a different use: it can keep a YouTube channel live with recorded material, but it does not broadcast a live camera or replace real-time hosting. Consider it only if an always-on stream of your uploaded videos serves a separate channel goal.
