Best Streaming Software for Online Classes: OBS, Zoom and Teams in 2026

Choose a classroom platform for student interaction and add OBS when you need more production control. This guide explains Zoom’s distinct streaming workflows, the retirement of Teams live events, and what to verify before class.

For an interactive online class, start with the meeting or classroom platform your school already supports. Use OBS Studio when you need more control over the video production—such as multiple scenes, screen-and-camera layouts, titles or prerecorded segments—and send its output to a suitable class platform. OBS makes the stream; it does not provide the student interaction layer.

Choose by how students will take part

“Streaming software” can mean either software that produces a video signal or a service through which students watch and participate. Decide first whether learners need to speak, ask questions, use chat or polls, or mainly watch a one-way lesson. Then check audience access, capacity, authentication and recording needs against the current license and your school’s policies.

  • Discussion-led class: Use the school-supported meeting or classroom service so students can participate directly.
  • Mostly one-way lecture: A webinar or broadcast workflow may fit better, provided the service and license support your audience and access requirements.
  • More polished video: Add OBS if you need to compose several visual or audio sources before delivering the lesson through a student-facing platform.

No single product is the best fit for every class: interaction, institutional licensing, computer capacity and the planned fallback all matter.

OBS Studio: production control, not a classroom by itself

OBS Studio is free, open-source software for video recording and live streaming, available for Windows, Mac and Linux. It can combine sources such as a webcam, screen or window capture, images, text, browser windows and capture cards into scenes, then switch between scenes with transitions. Its audio mixer supports per-source filters including noise suppression and gain.

When OBS is useful

  • You want a screen-and-camera layout, lecture title card or other composed scene.
  • You need to switch between slides, a demonstration window and a camera without changing the student-facing platform.
  • You want to mix and adjust audio sources or include prerecorded media as part of a produced lesson.

What OBS does not replace

OBS does not, by itself, give students a place to join, speak, submit questions or collaborate. Pair it with a suitable meeting, webinar or streaming destination. This extra production layer also adds setup and computer/network demands, so use it only when its controls are valuable to the class.

Check the computer and rehearse

The OBS system requirements list Windows 10 or 11 and macOS 11 or later among the current basics, along with compatible graphics and display support. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream or record well: CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test on the actual computer, network, microphone and scene planned for class.

Zoom: distinguish sending a class out from bringing production in

Zoom supports two different streaming directions, with different account and product requirements. Confirm the exact workflow and license with your administrator before building a class around it.

Send a Zoom meeting or webinar to a custom destination

Zoom’s custom livestreaming guidance says eligible Pro, Business, Education or Enterprise accounts can stream meetings or webinars to a custom platform when an administrator has enabled the feature and the host has the relevant Meetings or Webinars license. Higher video quality also depends on the applicable HD video setting. This is an outbound stream from Zoom to another destination; it is not the same as using OBS as the source inside Zoom.

Bring OBS or another encoder into a Zoom event

Zoom’s separate RTMP webinar instructions cover sending a third-party production tool such as OBS or vMix into Zoom Events webinars. The workflow is currently supported only on Zoom Events and Zoom Webinars Plus. Zoom lists a maximum of 1920×1080 at 30 fps and recommends at least 4 Mbps upload for 720p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p30. These are Zoom’s product-specific recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will perform reliably.

Zoom recommends testing before the event, using a wired connection where possible and keeping a backup plan. It also advises against running the encoder on the same device used to connect to the webinar. Follow the current setup requirements in Zoom’s documentation for the account and event type you will actually use.

Microsoft Teams: use the current event option

Microsoft’s Teams live events help page states that the live events experience retired on June 30, 2026, and points users to Teams town halls for the newer event experience. Do not plan a new class around the retired live-events product. For a Teams-based class or broadcast, check current town hall documentation, licensing and attendee access rules with your institution.

Plan the teaching setup before buying equipment

Check what the institution already provides

Ask the school’s administrator what is licensed and enabled, whether teachers can use custom streaming or event tools, and how students authenticate and join. Zoom’s education pricing FAQ describes bundles for eligible accredited K–12 and post-secondary institutions. It lists a minimum order of 20 for School and Campus plans; Enterprise plans have higher minimums and a site-wide coverage model. Its student option is for higher-education institutions buying an Enterprise bundle, subject to terms. These institutional arrangements are not a default individual-instructor plan; confirm eligibility, included services and current pricing with the institution or vendor.

Check audio, accessibility and recording requirements

Clear audio is central to a lesson. First test the microphone and room you already have; OBS offers mixing and filters if you need to adjust sources. A separate USB microphone may be useful, but the right choice depends on existing equipment and the room, and no particular model is established here. Before choosing a platform, verify its current captioning, recording and playback controls, plus your institution’s privacy and accessibility policies.

Supports major platforms (Zoom, Teams, Skype) and recording apps. Rehearse the whole route and keep a fallback

Test using the same computer, microphone, network, platform, account permissions and student access settings planned for class. For an encoder-based Zoom RTMP workflow, compare your upload capacity with Zoom’s recommendations and test the complete route rather than relying on a speed estimate alone. Keep an alternate way to contact students or deliver the lesson if the stream fails.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • OBS output stutters or the computer struggles: Reduce production complexity and test a lower output resolution or frame rate; encoder, scene complexity and settings affect CPU demand. Re-run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and rehearse on the teaching computer.
  • Students cannot join or participate: Check the selected service, event type, authentication and license with the administrator. A production tool such as OBS is not a substitute for a student-facing class platform.
  • Zoom’s custom-stream option is missing: Ask the account administrator whether custom livestreaming is enabled, and confirm the host’s account tier and Meetings or Webinars license.
  • OBS cannot be used as the source for a Zoom event: Confirm the event is a Zoom Events webinar or Zoom Webinars Plus event and review the current RTMP requirements; this incoming workflow is distinct from Zoom’s custom outbound livestreaming.
  • Zoom RTMP stream is unstable: Check the upload connection against Zoom’s resolution-specific recommendation, prefer wired networking where possible, test in advance and avoid running the encoder on the webinar connection device when feasible.
  • A planned Teams live event cannot be created: That experience retired June 30, 2026. Review Teams town halls and current institutional licensing instead.
  • Audio is hard to understand: Test microphone placement and room noise before class. If producing through OBS, adjust the relevant source and filters, then listen to a rehearsal recording or test stream.
