Indian IT stocks respond to the rupee, US demand and interest rates because these forces can affect companies’ translated revenue and margins, customers’ technology budgets, and the prices investors assign to future earnings. None is a reliable standalone buy-or-sell signal: the effect varies by company, and expectations often move share prices before reported results do.
How a weaker or stronger rupee can affect IT companies
Many Indian IT-services firms earn substantial revenue in foreign currencies while paying a significant share of their expenses in rupees. When foreign-currency receipts are converted into rupees, a weaker rupee can raise their reported rupee value and support margins if costs and other factors remain unchanged. A stronger rupee can work in the opposite direction.

The exposure is not one-way or identical across companies. Firms earn in currencies beyond the US dollar, may also have foreign-currency costs, and can use hedges such as forwards or options. Currency movements can affect revenue, other income, cost of sales, gross margin and net income; the net result depends on each firm’s currency mix, hedging, pricing and operations.

Infosys’s disclosed sensitivity is company-specific
In its fiscal 2026 Form 20-F, Infosys reported that exports represented 97.1% of its revenue. It also estimated that each percentage-point depreciation or appreciation in USD/INR affected its incremental operating margins by approximately 0.44% during that fiscal year. This is Infosys’s reported sensitivity for fiscal 2026, not a rule for the wider IT sector. Infosys fiscal 2026 Form 20-F
#1 Best Overall
Infosys states that rupee depreciation against the US dollar or other currencies affects its margins positively, while appreciation affects them negatively. That disclosure describes the company’s exposure; it does not mean a weaker rupee guarantees a higher share price or better results in every quarter.
Why US demand matters to Indian IT stocks
The US is a large destination for India’s software-services exports, so spending by US businesses can influence demand for outsourcing, consulting, cloud work and other technology services. The Reserve Bank of India’s survey for 2023–24 put the US share of India’s software-services export destinations at 54%; the US dollar accounted for 72% of export invoicing. These are industry-level figures, not the customer or currency mix of any one listed company. Reserve Bank of India, 2023–24 software-services exports survey
Rank #2
The RBI reported total software-services exports of US$205.2 billion in 2023–24, including services delivered by foreign affiliates of Indian companies. This broader measure provides context for the sector’s scale; it should not be read as revenue earned only by Indian-listed IT firms.

When customers face uncertainty or tighter budgets, they may delay projects or reduce discretionary technology spending. Wipro’s fiscal 2025 Form 20-F identifies weak demand, lower discretionary spending and customer capital-spending patterns among relevant business risks and drivers. Because companies differ in client concentration, industries served, contract mix and delivery models, a demand indicator is useful context rather than a complete forecast for every vendor. Sector growth estimates are not company forecasts
Wipro’s fiscal 2026 Form 20-F cites a NASSCOM estimate that Indian IT-services revenue would grow 4.1% year over year in fiscal 2026. It names AI adoption, data-center investment and the expansion of global capability centers (GCCs) as growth drivers. The 4.1% figure is NASSCOM’s industry estimate as relayed in Wipro’s filing, not Wipro guidance or a forecast for each company. Wipro fiscal 2026 Form 20-F
How interest rates enter the picture
Rates can matter through two distinct channels. First, they affect borrowing conditions and economic activity, which can influence how much businesses are willing or able to spend on technology. The Federal Reserve explains that changes in its target range influence other short-term rates, which in turn affect household and business spending and economic activity. Second, investors may change how much they are willing to pay for expected future earnings as interest rates and perceived risk change. This valuation channel can affect a stock even before a company reports a change in revenue or margins. Earnings expectations, currency, client demand and broad market sentiment also matter, so a rate move alone does not determine the direction of Indian IT shares.

The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report said the FOMC had maintained a federal funds target range of 3.50% to 3.75% through that month. The report also discussed equity performance alongside earnings and AI optimism; it does not establish a universal causal effect of US rates on Indian IT stocks. The July figure is a dated observation, not confirmation of the policy setting in October 2026. Federal Reserve, July 2026 Monetary Policy Report

How to assess these factors company by company
Use the factors as a framework for reading company disclosures, not as a mechanical prediction of share-price direction. For a comparison, examine the same categories for each company:
- Geographic exposure: Compare US and other regional revenue shares, while distinguishing company-level figures from RBI industry export data.
- Currency exposure: Check invoicing currencies, foreign-currency expenses and the company’s explanation of how exchange-rate movements affect results.
- Hedging: Read what the firm says about its hedges and how much exposure remains; do not assume every company manages currency risk the same way.
- Customer demand: Look for commentary on discretionary spending, project delays, client capital budgets and the industries or customers on which the company is concentrated.
- Valuation and expectations: Separate changes in operating results from changes in what investors expect or are prepared to pay for future earnings.
A stock can rise or fall even when its operating exposure points the other way: markets also price expectations, valuation and risk sentiment. The sources cited here explain why the rupee, US demand and interest rates can matter, but do not provide a company-independent formula for predicting Indian IT share returns.
