Why I’m Breaking the Coding Tutorial Loop by Building Projects

Tutorials can help, but they can also crowd out practice. Goldheart JW explains the shift from collecting lessons to building a small project and learning as needed.

Watching a coding lesson can make a concept feel clear; using it alone in a blank editor is a different challenge. In a personal reflection on learning frontend development, Goldheart JW describes taking courses, watching tutorials and saving resources while building very little. The change was not to stop learning from explanations, but to make projects the place where that learning gets used.

How learning started to feel like progress without producing much

Goldheart JW describes spending time on frontend basics, including CSS and JavaScript, through tutorials and courses. Each explanation offered a sense of momentum: a technique made sense while someone demonstrated it, and there was always another resource to save for later. Yet the author felt they were “learning a lot but building very little.”

That is the tension at the heart of the reflection. Watching a solution unfold is not the same as deciding what to do when the editor is empty. The author puts it this way: “Knowing how something works when someone is explaining it to you is not the same as knowing how to use it when you’re staring at a blank editor”. The first kind of understanding matters, but it does not automatically supply the next step in a project.

This is the author’s personal account, not a measured finding about every beginner. Its value is in naming a familiar-feeling trap: preparation can become a comfortable stand-in for trying to make something.

Why the answer is not to abandon tutorials

Tutorials and courses can explain unfamiliar ideas and help when a particular obstacle is hard to approach alone. The problem, as the author sees it, is relying on them as the main activity and waiting until everything feels understood before beginning a project.

Instead, the author shifts the order: start with a modest build, then seek an explanation when a real question appears. A tutorial can support the work without deciding all of it. That leaves room to practice making choices, notice what is missing, and apply a concept in a context that is not already filled in by an instructor.

What finishing a small project meant

The author had previous projects that did not reach completion. Completing a small Frontend Mentor Testimonials Grid project therefore mattered less as a measure of skill than as a marker of returning to coding and carrying one manageable piece of work through to the end. It is an example from the author’s experience, not a claim that this particular challenge is the right starting point for everyone.

Finishing also changes the shape of a learning session. Rather than collecting more possible things to learn, the immediate question becomes concrete: what is the next missing piece required to make this version work? The scope can stay small enough to complete, while the work still creates reasons to learn.

A practical build-first learning rhythm

The author’s proposed cycle is: “Build. Get stuck. Learn. Fix. Finish. Repeat.” It is a way to put learning in service of making something, not a guarantee that every project will go smoothly.

  1. Choose a small outcome. Pick a project you can describe in a sentence and keep its first version limited. The goal is a finishable build, not a showcase-sized idea.
  2. Start before you feel fully ready. Make the first piece of the project, even if you know you will need to look up details. Let the work reveal what you do not yet know how to do.
  3. Learn for the obstacle in front of you. Use a tutorial or other explanation to answer a specific question, then return to the project and apply what you learned.
  4. Fix and continue. Test the change in context. If it does not work, use the result to refine the question rather than restarting with an unrelated course.
  5. Finish a modest version. Decide what “done” means for this small scope. Completing it gives you a clear endpoint before you choose what to build next.

The point is not to avoid feeling stuck. In this approach, getting stuck is the cue to learn something relevant and then put it to use.

How to tell whether a tutorial is helping

A useful check is what happens after the explanation ends. Can you make a change, adapt the idea to your own project, or explain what you need to try next? If the lesson only feels clear while it is being demonstrated, the next useful step may be to close it temporarily and attempt a small piece yourself.

When you hit a specific gap, return to a resource with that question in mind. Then come back to the editor and see whether you can apply the answer. This keeps tutorials in the loop as support, rather than letting the next lesson continually postpone the first independent attempt.

The takeaway from choosing to build

Goldheart JW sums up the reflection as a personal conviction: “You don’t become better at development by only learning about development. You become better by developing.” It is not presented as a research-backed universal rule; it captures why the author chose to replace more preparation with a small, completed project and learning along the way.
