To find what is filling your C drive, start with Settings > System > Storage, then review the largest categories before deleting anything. Windows’ built-in tools can help identify temporary files, apps and personal files taking up room; the safest cleanup is the one where you inspect each item and understand what it does first.
Check how much space is available
Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the available space shown for the system drive, usually C:. This gives you a baseline to compare after cleanup. Low storage can slow a PC or interfere with Windows updates, according to Microsoft’s free-space guidance.

Use Storage settings to find the cause
- Open Settings > System > Storage. If the labels differ in your Windows release, search Settings for “Storage.”
- Review the category breakdown. Windows may show Installed apps, Temporary files, System & reserved, and other categories.
- Open a category to see what it includes before deciding what to remove or move.
The category view helps distinguish an app-heavy drive from one crowded with temporary data or personal files. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can present different labels or options; Microsoft documents the Storage settings view at Storage settings in Windows.

In Storage, open Cleanup recommendations if it is available. Windows may suggest temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps, and show the space associated with suggestions. Inspect the categories and selected items individually before choosing Clean up. A recommendation is not a reason to delete a file you still need.

Find large personal files in File Explorer
If Videos, Music, Pictures, or Downloads are using substantial space, sort the files by size and review them one at a time:
- Open a folder in File Explorer.
- Change the folder to Details view.
- Select the Size column heading to sort, putting the largest files near the top. If the column is not visible, right-click a column heading and choose Size.
- Decide whether to delete each file or move it to storage you want to keep using.
Deleting a file may move it to the Recycle Bin rather than reclaiming its space immediately. Empty the Recycle Bin only after checking that you do not need anything in it. Microsoft’s instructions for sorting personal files and freeing drive space are in its Windows free-space guide.

Choose a cleanup method that matches the files
| Method | What it helps inspect | What it may remove or change | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage category view and Cleanup recommendations | Space by category and suggested cleanup items | Selected recommendations, which can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud files, and unused apps | Review suggestions and selections before cleanup |
| Storage Sense | Eligible temporary files and configured cleanup targets | Temporary files and, depending on settings, Recycle Bin contents or opted-in Downloads and cloud content | Automated; review its settings before relying on it |
| Disk Cleanup | Selectable file types on a chosen drive | Only the file types you select and confirm | Manual; read each file-type description first |
| File Explorer sorting | Large personal files in folders such as Downloads, Videos, Music, and Pictures | Files you choose to delete or move | Manual, file-by-file review |
| External storage or another save location | Files you want to retain rather than remove | Moves storage use off C: or directs new content elsewhere | You choose what to move and where |
Use Storage Sense for eligible automatic cleanup
Storage Sense can automatically clear eligible temporary files. Microsoft says it works on the system drive, usually C:, and its default behavior cleans unnecessary temporary files when the device is low on space and deletes Recycle Bin contents after the configured time. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you opt in. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense cloud offloading.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

Use Disk Cleanup when you want manual choices
If Storage Sense is unavailable, Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup as a built-in alternative. Search Windows for Disk Cleanup, choose the drive, inspect the descriptions and checkboxes for each file type, then confirm only the selections you understand and want removed. Do not assume every checkbox is safe for every person or use case.
Treat Previous Windows Installation(s) as a rollback decision
Disk Cleanup may offer Previous Windows Installation(s). Removing these files deletes Windows.old data used to return to the preceding Windows version; the rollback cannot be undone afterward. Keep them if you may need to go back. Microsoft explains this consequence in its free-space instructions.

Move files you want to keep instead of deleting them
For infrequently used personal files, consider moving them to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card. The drive does not find or clean files; you choose what to move. You can also change where new content is saved so it does not keep accumulating on C:. Microsoft describes moving files and changing storage locations in its Windows free-space guide.
OneDrive Files On-Demand can keep a smaller placeholder on the PC while the full file remains in the cloud. An online-only file requires internet access to retrieve its contents. If you need a file available offline, mark it Always keep on this device; Storage Sense does not offload files with that mark.

If the Temp folder fills again quickly
A recurring increase after cleanup may have a specific cause rather than simply needing another round of deletion. Microsoft notes that Microsoft Store .appx files can cause the Temp folder to refill. For that symptom, its guidance includes resetting the Store, clearing its cache with wsreset.exe, running the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restarting the PC. These are targeted troubleshooting steps, not a general first step for a full drive; consult Microsoft’s instructions for the recurring Temp-folder case.
Escalate only if routine cleanup does not resolve the problem
If low storage is preventing an update, Microsoft documents using external storage to help with an update. If the drive remains too full for updates after the recommended steps, resetting or reinstalling Windows is a last resort: it can affect apps, settings, and files, so back up important data and understand the recovery options before proceeding. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing drive space for the applicable steps.
