The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Developers usually switch to Linux for one practical reason: many of the tools, dependencies, and deployment targets they work with were built for Linux first. Running the work in a Linux environment removes a layer of translation between the code and the system it will run on. That is a fit argument, not a claim that Linux is faster, more productive, or the right choice for every developer.
Where Linux-first assumptions create friction
Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux FAQ describes a practical problem that many developers hit. Some tools assume Linux-like paths or files, and some package dependencies are Linux-specific. When a project relies on those assumptions, a build or runtime can fail on Windows even though the code itself is correct. The same mismatch appears when a team’s shell scripts, Makefiles, or container setup were written for a Linux server.

Running the project on Linux, whether on a native desktop or inside WSL, means the scripts and libraries see the environment they were written against. The benefit is most visible when your project is also deployed to Linux servers or containers, because the development machine then resembles production more closely.

You do not have to replace Windows first
Microsoft describes WSL this way: “The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a feature of the Windows operating system that enables you to run a Linux file system, along with Linux command-line tools and GUI apps, directly on Windows, alongside your traditional Windows desktop and apps.” Microsoft positions it for developers who want Linux tools and Windows productivity applications side by side.

- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
WSL is still a Linux environment hosted inside Windows, so the choice is not the same as moving the workstation to Linux. It does require attention to where project files live. Windows-mounted files are reachable from Linux and the reverse, but tools on each side may behave differently when they touch the same folder. Decide which side owns the project before you run build or package commands.
Choosing a Linux distribution
“Linux” is not one desktop product. The distribution you pick determines your release cadence, the packages available, and how much vendor documentation you can rely on. Two commonly chosen options for developers illustrate the trade-off.

Ubuntu Desktop
Canonical describes Ubuntu LTS releases as arriving every two years, with five years of standard support. That longer window suits teams that value stability over the newest packages. In May 2025, the Ubuntu Foundations team announced documentation for using Ubuntu Desktop as a development platform, which it describes as “Ubuntu for Developers.” The guidance covers setup for Python, Go, Rust, GCC, .NET, and Java, along with related IDE, debugger, linter, and formatter material. Canonical also lists Ubuntu-certified hardware from Dell, Lenovo, and HP. Certification applies to specific configurations, so check the exact model you plan to buy or already own.

The Fedora Project’s Workstation page highlights current developer packages, container tooling, and virtualization features. It also states the update window plainly: “Each version is updated for approximately 13 months, and upgrades between versions are quick and easy.” If you choose Fedora, plan for regular version upgrades rather than a multi-year release you can leave alone.

Side-by-side comparison
| Option | Strongest reason to consider it | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux desktop | Your workstation matches Linux-targeted software and deployment; Ubuntu and Fedora both document developer setup paths. | Replacing or dual-booting the OS requires checking hardware and application compatibility, and accepting the distribution’s update cadence. |
| WSL on Windows | Linux shell, filesystem, and GUI apps run alongside Windows applications, without replacing the OS (Microsoft Learn WSL FAQ). | It remains a Linux environment inside Windows, and you must manage how Windows and Linux tools share project files. |
| Ubuntu Desktop | Documented developer toolchain guidance (announced May 23, 2025), LTS releases with five years of standard support, and listed certified hardware from Dell, Lenovo, and HP (Canonical). | LTS favors a longer support window over the newest packages. Confirm the current LTS release and its support dates on Ubuntu’s release information before you commit. |
| Fedora Workstation | Current developer packages, container tooling, and virtualization features (Fedora Project). | Each version receives roughly 13 months of updates, so you must upgrade on that schedule. |
What the usage figures do and do not show
Canonical’s developer page cites the 2025 State of Open Source Report from Perforce OpenLogic for organizational use: Ubuntu 56.73%, Debian 31.73%, and Fedora 14.42%. These are multiple-choice answers about which open-source technologies respondents’ organizations use to support software infrastructure. They are not desktop market share, and they do not show what percentage of individual developers run each distribution.
No independent study establishes that Linux makes individual developers more productive. Canonical’s older whitepaper on the subject is vendor-authored promotional material. If you want to justify a switch, base it on whether your toolchain runs better on Linux, not on a productivity claim.

Trade-offs to weigh before switching
- Hardware support: Check drivers for Wi-Fi, graphics, and power management on your exact model, not just the product line.
- Required applications: Some commercial desktop software is available only for Windows or macOS. Confirm that each app you need works on your chosen option, or plan a Windows environment for it.
- GPU needs: If your work depends on a specific graphics stack or accelerator, verify support for that setup on Linux.
- Update cadence: LTS releases and six-to-thirteen-month cycles require different maintenance habits.
- Windows integration: If your work depends on Windows-only tools, WSL may cover the Linux part while Windows handles the rest.
A low-risk way to test the switch
- Search your project’s build scripts, CI configuration, container files, and documentation for Linux-specific paths, package names, and shell commands. This shows how much of the project already assumes Linux.
- If you want Linux tools without changing your desktop, install WSL by following Microsoft’s current WSL installation guide. Then clone or copy the project into the Linux filesystem and run its build and test commands there.
- Record what fails and why. Missing packages, path separators, and line-ending issues are the most common signals that a project depends on Linux behavior.
- If you want a native Linux desktop, confirm your exact hardware appears on Ubuntu’s certified hardware list or that your model’s Linux support meets your needs. Ubuntu documents installing alongside an existing operating system, which leaves your current OS in place.
- Create installation media on a USB flash drive before you start a native install. WSL does not require one. Back up your data before changing partitions.
Work through these steps on a project you already maintain. If the build and tests pass with little adjustment, a Linux environment fits that work. If they fail on details you cannot change, keep that project on its current platform and use Linux only where it helps.
