A side-mounted fingerprint reader can be easier to locate by touch because it sits on a physical button rather than beneath the screen. That is a usability advantage, not proof that it is faster or more reliable: the result depends on the phone, your grip and fingers, and any screen protector. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip7 is a current example of a side-mounted capacitive reader; the Galaxy S25 series uses an ultrasonic reader under the display.
Is a side fingerprint sensor better than an under-display fingerprint sensor?
It can be better for a particular person or use pattern, but Samsung’s specifications do not establish that side-mounted readers outperform every under-display option. A side reader’s most obvious practical advantage is its physical location: because it is built into a button, you may be able to find it by touch while holding the phone. Whether that makes unlocking quicker or more comfortable depends on the exact device, hand size, grip, and which hand you use.

Samsung’s support guidance distinguishes phones with under-display readers from models with readers on the side or power button. Its lists can change and model coverage may differ by region, so check the exact phone and market rather than assuming every Samsung model uses the same placement. Samsung’s fingerprint-recognition support page provides placement and troubleshooting information.

What Samsung phones illustrate the difference?
| Phone | Reader location and technology | What the example establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Flip7 | Capacitive reader on the side, according to Samsung’s specifications | A current Samsung example of a button-mounted reader. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 specifications. |
| Galaxy S25 series | Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on screen, according to Samsung’s specification sheet | An example of Samsung’s under-display approach. Samsung Galaxy S25 series specifications. |
| Galaxy S10e | Fingerprint scanner on the power button, as described in Samsung’s 2019 announcement | A historical example of a Samsung power-button reader. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 announcement. |
These examples show that reader placement and technology vary; they do not rank the models’ speed, success rate, or security. The Z Flip7’s capacitive side reader and the S25 series’ ultrasonic in-display sensor are distinct implementations, not controlled comparative results.

Why a side-mounted reader may feel easier to use
It is a physical target you can find by touch
A button-mounted sensor occupies a fixed spot on the edge of the phone. If your finger naturally rests there as you pick up the device, locating the reader may feel more direct than aiming at an on-screen area. But the benefit is not universal: button position, phone size, handedness, grip, and whether the phone is folded or open all affect access.
It does not depend on tapping a marked screen area
An under-display reader requires the registered finger to reach the active sensor area. That can be straightforward once the placement becomes familiar, but it may take a deliberate tap. Actual convenience depends on the phone’s design and the way you hold it; Samsung’s specifications identify sensor placement, not comparative ease of use.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

Screen protectors and finger condition can affect recognition
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance identifies screen protectors, contamination, moisture, and finger condition as factors that can interfere with fingerprint recognition. It warns that some thick or glass protectors may cause problems with in-display sensors. If an under-display reader becomes inconsistent after fitting a protector, the protector’s compatibility with that exact phone is a sensible first thing to check; do not assume every protector or in-display sensor behaves the same way. Samsung’s fingerprint-recognition guidance covers these issues.
Samsung also documented a specific historical incident in 2019: certain silicone screen-protector patterns were reportedly recognised by ultrasonic sensors as fingerprints. Samsung described the issue as involving “3-dimensional patterns appearing on certain silicone screen protecting cases.” This is a report about that issue at that time, not evidence that all current ultrasonic readers or protectors have the same vulnerability. Samsung’s 2019 statement gives the context.

How to make a fair comparison between readers
If you are deciding between two phones, compare them in the conditions you actually encounter rather than relying on placement alone. Keep your test consistent and record what happens; a few convenient unlocks are not enough to establish that one design is universally better.
- Compare the exact phone models and confirm their reader locations for your market.
- Use the same hand and a similar grip for each phone, and note whether the phone is folded or open where relevant.
- Try a stated number of unlock attempts for each device and record successful reads and approximate time to unlock.
- Note whether each phone has a screen protector installed, including its type, and avoid comparing a protected phone with an unprotected one as if the conditions were identical.
- Test with clean, dry fingers first. If you also want to assess everyday conditions such as damp fingers or a changed grip, record those separately rather than mixing them into the baseline.
This method can support a personal choice between the tested phones. Without documented, consistent testing, it cannot support a broad claim that side-mounted sensors beat every under-display reader.

What can—and cannot—be said about security
Reader placement alone does not establish which phone is more secure. In its 2019 Galaxy S10 announcement, Samsung said the ultrasonic reader read 3D contours of a physical thumbprint “for improved anti-spoofing.” That is Samsung’s product claim about a particular device, not an independent head-to-head security assessment or evidence that under-display sensors are safer overall. Samsung’s announcement describes the claim.
