Gadget Review’s September 25, 2026 article lists ten luxury cars it says lost more than 60% of their value: the Audi Q8 e-tron, Genesis Electrified G80, Jaguar F-Pace, BMW iX, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Tesla Model X, Tesla Model S, Land Rover Range Rover, Maserati Quattroporte, and Maserati Levante. That list is an editorial ranking, not a comparable set of independently verified depreciation results. A separate U.S. study from iSeeCars gives a clearer benchmark: several luxury models, including the Range Rover and Tesla Model S and Model X, averaged more than 60% five-year depreciation in its defined sample.
What “lost 60%” means—and what it does not
Depreciation depends on the starting value, the car’s age, and how its later value is measured. A claim that a car “lost 60%” is incomplete without a time horizon and valuation method. It does not necessarily mean the car lost that much in its first year, nor does it predict the resale price of every trim, mileage, condition, or transaction.

For a consistent comparison, iSeeCars’ 2026 study examined more than 950,000 five-year-old used cars sold in the United States from March 2025 through February 2026. It adjusted new-vehicle MSRP for inflation to 2026 dollars and compared that figure with average used asking prices. The study found average five-year depreciation of 41.8% across vehicles. These are sample averages, not guaranteed outcomes or current asking prices for a particular car. See iSeeCars’ 2026 depreciation study.

The study’s results independently put these four luxury models above 60% average five-year depreciation:
#1 Best Overall
- Model size: 21 x 8.5 x 6.5 cm
- Material: polished stainless steel.
- Number of pieces: 146 pieces.
- Recommended age: 14+
| Model | Average five-year depreciation | Average dollar difference from MSRP |
|---|---|---|
| Infiniti QX80 | 62.8% | $52,631 |
| Land Rover Range Rover | 61.7% | $69,856 |
| BMW 7 Series | 61.6% | Not stated in the cited study figures |
| Tesla Model S | 62.0% | Not stated in the cited study figures |
| Tesla Model X | 61.2% | Not stated in the cited study figures |
The dollar figures illustrate why percentage loss alone can mislead: the Range Rover’s average difference from inflation-adjusted MSRP was $69,856, compared with $52,631 for the Infiniti QX80. Both values come from the same U.S. study and should not be read as the loss on any one vehicle. iSeeCars provides its study results and methodology.
The ten cars named by Gadget Review
Gadget Review’s September 25, 2026 article presents the following cars in this order. The figures above independently corroborate more than 60% five-year depreciation only for the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, and Land Rover Range Rover among this list. They do not establish the same result for every other entry.

Gadget Review links depreciation in its list to factors such as changing EV technology and pricing, model supply, brand perception, service and repair concerns, and costs after warranty. Those are the article’s explanations, not independent findings about every model. Its list does not provide a consistent model-by-model valuation table using one sample, geography, trim, and time period. Read Gadget Review’s list and its stated explanations.
Why a steep discount is not the same as a bargain
A lower used price can make an expensive car more accessible, but depreciation alone does not establish that it will be inexpensive to own. Repair exposure, service availability, warranty status, and—in an electric vehicle—the battery’s condition can all matter to a buyer. A sharp percentage decline is a market-value measure, not a reliability rating or a forecast of future repair bills.

iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer interpreted the study’s recent reduction in five-year depreciation rates this way: “This recent reduction in 5-year depreciation rates suggests rising used car demand and/or insufficient supply over the past 12 months,” according to the study. That is an explanation of a broad market trend, not a prediction for a specific model or vehicle.

How to assess a used luxury car before buying
Compare like with like
- Check the model year, trim, mileage, condition, and market before comparing asking prices or depreciation estimates.
- Consider percentage depreciation alongside the dollar difference from the original, inflation-adjusted MSRP; a high percentage does not automatically mean the car is cheap in absolute terms.
- Treat broad study averages as context, not a valuation of the individual car you are considering.
Check condition, coverage, and service
- For an EV, check battery health and confirm what warranty coverage remains for the specific vehicle. A battery check is useful evidence, not a guarantee about future performance or costs.
- Review available service options and the car’s maintenance and repair history rather than assuming a low purchase price offsets future expenses.
- Arrange a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified professional. Gadget Review specifically recommends an inspection for a used Jaguar F-Pace; that is practical advice, not proof that every F-Pace has a fault.
