It is not a complete backup strategy on its own: a second device in the same home can still be lost to the same fire, theft, or other site-wide disaster. The practical case for keeping one is separation, paired with off-site protection and restore tests.
Why keep a backup offline?
A backup that is continuously reachable from your computers and network is still exposed to problems that affect those systems. CISA recommends maintaining offline, encrypted backups of critical data and regularly testing their availability and integrity in a disaster recovery scenario. Its #StopRansomware Guide also warns that ransomware variants may try to find and delete or encrypt accessible backups.

Separating a backup target from ordinary network access reduces that exposure. The goal is not to make the NAS magically immune to failure; it is to make it more difficult for a compromised device or account to alter or destroy the recovery copy.
What “offline” needs to mean
A NAS is not offline merely because it is a second box. If it remains reachable on the same network, a compromised computer may still be able to access it, depending on network and account configuration. For an offline copy, disconnect or otherwise isolate the backup device outside the periods when backups run.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Disconnect a backup NAS between jobs
One method is to connect the backup NAS only for scheduled backup windows, then disconnect its network connection or power it down. QNAP documents a vendor-specific approach that can disconnect a backup NAS outside backup activity, but it depends on supported hardware, firmware, and software. Do not assume that the same feature exists on another NAS or that every QNAP setup supports it; check the compatibility requirements for the exact equipment and software.
Use a removable drive for a simpler offline copy
An external USB drive can serve as a removable backup destination. It only functions as an offline copy after the backup is complete and the drive is disconnected. Leaving it attached keeps it accessible to the computer it is meant to help recover.

What an offline NAS can and cannot protect
Network isolation addresses one route to backup damage; it does not protect the NAS from every threat. A local backup can still be lost if the original devices and backup are affected by the same fire, natural disaster, or theft. Synology makes this limitation explicit in its Backup & Data Protection guidance: local backups are a first step, not protection against every site-wide event.

How an offline NAS fits into a wider backup plan
Synology describes the 3-2-1 baseline as keeping multiple copies across different media, with one copy off-site. QNAP extends that idea in its 3-2-1-1-0 framing: three copies, two media types, one off-site, one immutable or air-gapped, and zero recovery errors through verification. These are vendor-presented frameworks, not guarantees. The useful takeaway is to avoid relying on one backup device, one medium, or one location.
When choosing how to build the plan, weigh the trade-offs directly:

- Network separation: Can the copy be reached from everyday devices outside backup windows?
- Off-site protection: Would a separate copy survive a loss at the site where the main systems and NAS are kept?
- Media diversity: Does the plan rely on only one kind of storage device?
- Recovery speed and effort: How quickly can you reconnect the backup and restore the files you need?
- Capacity and cost: Can the destination hold the data you intend to protect without relying on an unsupported capacity assumption?
- Restore testing: Have you actually recovered files, rather than only confirming that a backup job reported success?
Test the restore, not just the backup job
A completed backup task is not proof that the files can be recovered. CISA’s recommendation specifically calls for testing backup availability and integrity. Periodically restore a selection of files to a separate location, check that they open correctly, and confirm that you can reach the backup when the original system is unavailable. Include the steps needed to reconnect or unlock the backup in your recovery plan.
Vendor verification features can help detect problems in stored backups, but they do not replace a restore test that reflects your own devices and recovery needs. A plan is only useful if you can retrieve the data when you need it.
