A simple memory toggle made it easier for engineer Navya Reddy to see whether an incident assistant was actually using retrieved incident history. In her 2026 DEV Community case study, she reran the same alert with memory enabled and disabled while holding the described prompt, model, and temperature steady. The comparison offered a practical debugging aid—not proof that memory improves every incident response.
What the incident assistant did
Reddy describes Incident Copilot as a small FastAPI service for on-call engineers. An engineer submits an alert and symptoms; the service retrieves relevant past incidents and generates a structured response plan. Its endpoints are /plan, /action, /close, and /patterns. Hindsight sits behind a single memory module: the described path performs one recall step and then one LLM call, rather than running an agent loop. Read Reddy’s DEV Community article.

How the memory toggle isolated retrieval
The use_memory flag controls whether the recall step runs. With memory OFF, the assistant receives the literal NONE in place of a memory block. Reddy says the prompt, model, and temperature remain the same between the two runs. The UI can rerun the same alert in either mode, and the evaluation script uses the same flag.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat makes the switch a useful debugging control: if the output changes, the engineer can inspect the recalled context and its effect without intentionally changing those other parts of the described path. It is not a fully controlled scientific experiment, and the article does not establish that every other source of variation was eliminated.

Why the memory included failed actions
Rather than saving only a postmortem’s final fix, the project records actions and outcomes as WORKED, FAILED, or HARMFUL, with incident dates. The author also describes logging actions and their outcomes while an incident is in progress. This gives later recall a chance to surface not just a successful remedy, but an intervention that made the incident worse.
What the ON/OFF examples showed
Pool exhaustion
In Reddy’s held-out pool-exhaustion example, memory OFF produced general troubleshooting suggestions. With memory ON, cross-service retrieval surfaced earlier incidents. The resulting plan checked for a recent configuration change affecting pool settings and marked restarting with an avoid warning because it had worsened earlier incidents. These are the author’s reported project results, not independently reproduced findings or a guarantee of better advice in other incidents.

- 2 PCs Share Multiple Devices: UGREEN 2-In 4-Out USB switcher supports 2 computers sharing 4 USB devices like keyboards, mouses, printers, headphones, and USB cameras. Switch freely between your work computer and personal computer and boost your work efficiency. (NOTE: This USB Switcher is NOT a KVM switch and does not support connecting a monitor or video transmission)
- Connect USB C & USB A Devices: The USB 3.0 switch provides 1 USB C port and 3 USB A ports to support connecting various USB devices, extending more ports for two computers. (*It is recommended to power supply when using multiple devices simultaneously to avoid disconnection due to insufficient power.*)
- 5Gbps Data Transfer / Plug & Play: With 4 USB 3.0 ports, the USB 3.0 switcher supports data transfer up to 5Gbps and is backward compatible with USB 2.0; Simple plug and play for any modern operating system: Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux computers. (*The USB ports are primarily for data transfer and are not recommended for charging devices.*)
- Note: 1. If your input device uses a USB-C port, please purchase a USB-C to USB adapter before use. 2. When using a camera through the switcher, if your computer has a built-in camera, please select the UGREEN camera in the camera settings to ensure proper use. 3.The USB-C port on the product does not support video output and cannot be used with a dock to connect a display
- USB-C Power Supply: The USB switch is designed with a optional power supply for high-power devices like Hard Disk Drives, headsets, and other USB devices to work more stably; The upgraded USB-C Power port avoids the trouble of not finding a micro cable.
The article gives one illustrative sequence in which rollback came after 82 minutes; Reddy attributes most of that delay to two harmful actions. That figure describes this project example, not typical incident-response time.
Kafka consumer alert
In another example, cross-service recall surfaced a configuration-related incident even though the alert did not clearly identify that cause. Reddy also points to the risk: overlapping symptoms can lead retrieval to a plausible but overconfident hypothesis. Retrieved history should therefore inform investigation, not be treated as proof of root cause.

- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Increase your TV show, movie, and Full HD video[4] recording collections dramatically with up to a massive 1.5TB[1].
- Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].
How the author evaluated the approach
The described eval_learning_curve.py replays incidents in date order, runs each with memory OFF and ON, grades the outputs, and adds an incident to retained memory only after planning. That ordering is intended to prevent a run from seeing the incident it is supposed to plan for. The article describes four failure families, with three incidents per family across services plus one held-out example; these are seed and demonstration data, not a population estimate.
The article provides examples and an evaluation method, but no broad, independently validated performance result or quantified accuracy gain. Its examples support testing whether memory changes a plan and whether the retrieved evidence is relevant; they do not establish that memory caused better incident outcomes in general.

Safeguards that make recalled context inspectable
Reddy describes several prompt and interface choices intended to keep memory from becoming invisible authority:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
- Return recalled memories alongside each plan so an engineer can inspect the context used.
- Attach incident IDs to claims so the supporting history can be traced.
- Explicitly surface failed and harmful actions instead of preserving only successful fixes.
- Label unsupported suggestions as general advice when memory is absent or unrelated.
- Add a staleness note for older memories. The article’s six-month threshold is a prompt-design choice, not a validated universal cutoff.
