Why I Built CodeInk: One Desktop Workspace for Coding Agents

CodeInk organizes projects, coding-agent sessions, files, terminals, and reviews in one desktop workspace, while keeping external agents and its built-in gateway-powered agent distinct.

CodeInk is a desktop workspace for developers who want to manage projects and coding-agent sessions without keeping each one in a separate app. It brings project files, agent sessions, terminals, reviews, and session activity together, while letting users work with several external agents or CodeInk’s own gateway-powered agent.

Why build another coding-agent tool?

The maker’s public description frames CodeInk’s motivation as losing track of projects and sessions across too many separate apps. That is a practical problem for developers who use more than one coding agent: the work is divided not only among projects, but among different interfaces, histories, terminals, and approval flows.

CodeInk’s answer is a project-centered desktop workspace. It does not replace the underlying AI models or turn every agent into the same service. Instead, it brings supported agent workflows into a shared place where a developer can see and manage work across projects.

What CodeInk brings together

According to the official CodeInk README, the workspace groups projects, agent sessions, files, terminals, and reviews. It can display up to three live sessions in panes, alongside streaming responses, tool activity, edits, approval requests, and session history.

  • Projects and files: select a project folder and work with its files in the same desktop environment as agent sessions.
  • Sessions: view active agent conversations and their history, with up to three live sessions visible in panes.
  • Activity and review: follow responses, tool activity, edits, and approval requests rather than treating an agent’s final response as the only signal of what happened.
  • Terminals: keep terminal work alongside project and session views.

This kind of consolidation is most relevant when context switching is the friction: CodeInk offers a shared view, but the agents themselves remain distinct tools with their own capabilities and operating rules.

Which agents can you use?

The README describes native integrations for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, and Pi. It also supports Agent Client Protocol (ACP) presets and custom agents. A preset is a launch definition; its presence does not establish that every version of an agent has been tested to the same degree.

Option What it means in CodeInk Account and setup
Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, or Pi One of the four documented native integrations Use the agent’s own installation and sign-in; its tools and permissions remain its own
ACP preset A launch definition for an agent using an ACP workflow Configure the relevant agent and launch details; a preset is not a claim of equal testing across versions
Custom agent A user-configured agent option Configuration depends on the agent being added
CodeInk Agent CodeInk’s separate built-in agent Provide a supported Vercel AI Gateway or OpenRouter key

The built-in CodeInk Agent is not a fifth external integration in the same sense as the four named agents. It uses a user-provided gateway key, while external agents rely on their own installations, accounts, tools, and permission systems.

How data and permissions work

“One workspace” does not mean all agent data follows one data path. The README says CodeInk stores sessions and gateway keys on the user’s computer. When using CodeInk Agent, prompts and terminal results are sent to the selected gateway. External agents handle their own sign-in and data behavior, so their privacy and security practices should be checked separately.

For terminal commands, CodeInk Agent asks for approval by default unless Full access is selected. External agents use their own permission controls; CodeInk’s default approval behavior should not be assumed to govern them.

How to get started

  1. Set up the agent route you plan to use. Install and authenticate an external agent, or obtain a supported gateway key if you plan to use CodeInk Agent.
  2. Install CodeInk. Choose the appropriate current release for your operating system and release channel.
  3. Select a project folder. This gives the workspace a project to organize around.
  4. Configure a key if using CodeInk Agent. Add your gateway key in CodeInk; this step is not needed just to use an external agent.
  5. Choose an agent and model. Select the workflow that fits the project, then review its permissions and approval behavior before running commands.

Platforms, release channels, and licensing

The README lists packages for macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows x64, and Linux x64 and ARM64. It also documents separate Production and Early Access installs. Packages and release-channel details can change, so check the current CodeInk releases before downloading.

The README describes current releases as GPL-3.0-or-later and says earlier releases were distributed under MIT. The license applicable to a particular copy depends on the release; the README notes that the later change does not retract permissions granted for earlier versions. Check the license file and terms for the version you use.

Who is CodeInk a good fit for?

CodeInk is most compelling for a developer who already uses multiple coding agents and wants a single project-oriented place to follow their sessions and related work. Its documented visibility into tool activity, edits, approvals, and history may also suit someone who wants more than a chat transcript while overseeing agent work.

It may be less useful if you work with just one agent and are happy in that agent’s own interface, or if you expect CodeInk to unify every agent’s account, permissions, or data practices. Its value is workflow organization, not evidence of better code or guaranteed time savings. The available product documentation establishes features and setup, not comparative performance or independent productivity results.
