Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Handheld gaming PCs can cost more than consoles because they combine a laptop-class computer, a high-refresh display, game controls, battery, cooling system and compact enclosure in one device. A traditional console spreads some costs across a larger box, a separate television and accessories. Console makers may also rely on revenue from games, subscriptions and storefront transactions after the hardware sale, while a handheld-PC maker often has to recover more of its investment from the initial purchase.
That is an explanation of different designs and business models, not a universal rule. Some handheld PCs are cheaper than some consoles, and console hardware is not always sold at a loss. The meaningful comparison is between specific products sold in the same country, at the same time and at similar performance levels.

What you are paying for in a handheld gaming PC
A handheld gaming PC is a complete portable computer rather than a console controller with a screen attached. Its price includes several systems that would normally be separate purchases:
- Compute hardware: a mobile processor and integrated graphics must run modern games within a limited power budget.
- Memory and storage: fast system memory and an SSD hold the operating system, shader caches and increasingly large game installs.
- Display: the panel, touch layer, glass, controller and high-refresh electronics all fit inside the chassis.
- Controls: sticks, triggers, buttons, haptics and their circuit boards require precision parts and assembly.
- Battery and power management: cells, charging circuitry and safety hardware determine how long the system can play and how quickly it can recharge.
- Thermal design: heat pipes, fans, vents, sensors and custom firmware keep a powerful chip within safe temperatures.
- Portable construction: a rigid, comfortable enclosure must survive being carried while remaining light enough for extended play.
For example, the announced ROG Xbox Ally X specification combines a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display, 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and an 80Wh battery. Those components add cost and engineering work beyond the processor itself. A console can devote more volume to cooling and power delivery because it is designed to sit beside a television; a handheld has to fit those functions around your hands and a battery.

Why small high-performance computers are difficult to build
Performance versus battery life
More graphics performance generally requires more electrical power. In a handheld, that power comes from a battery that also adds weight and occupies valuable internal space. Designers therefore tune the processor to several power levels rather than letting it run like a desktop chip. At a lower setting, the device lasts longer but renders fewer frames; at a higher setting, performance improves while runtime falls and the cooling fan becomes louder.
The trade-off affects every generation. A larger battery can extend play time, but it makes the device heavier and leaves less room for cooling or storage. A smaller battery keeps the system comfortable to hold, yet requires more frequent charging. There is no component upgrade that removes this compromise.
Heat in a constrained enclosure
Heat must move from the processor to a heatsink and then out through vents without making the grips uncomfortably warm. The fan, heat pipe and airflow path are custom parts, and the firmware has to coordinate them with game performance. A console has more room for a large heatsink and can draw cool air from a fixed position. A handheld may be used on a sofa, in a case or against a table, so its vents and fan curve must tolerate less predictable airflow.

A handheld includes its own screen and input devices, while a console buyer usually supplies a television and may already own a controller. A 120Hz panel can make menus and supported games feel smoother, but it costs more than a basic 60Hz display and consumes additional power. Sticks, triggers and haptics also need to be durable, accurate and comfortable despite the limited space available.

How console and handheld-PC revenue models differ
The purchase price is shaped by what the manufacturer expects to earn after the sale. Omdia analyst James McWhirter reported in 2024 that Valve earns the majority of its post-sale revenue through software sold on Steam, while other handheld makers depend more heavily on money earned when the hardware is purchased. That difference can lead to different launch prices even when the devices have similar chips.
This does not establish that every console is subsidized or that every console maker loses money on hardware. Hardware margins vary by model, production scale, component contracts and the stage of a product’s life. The supported conclusion is narrower: a platform with a large, captive software storefront can use future game and service revenue when setting hardware prices, whereas a Windows-based handheld may not receive a comparable share of every game sold through other stores.
Scale matters as well. Consoles are manufactured in very large volumes, allowing fixed design, tooling and certification costs to be spread across more units. A niche handheld PC may sell fewer units and therefore carry a larger share of those costs in each box. Omdia estimated 19.3 million dedicated handheld gaming hardware units were sold through to consumers globally in 2023, and forecast 29.3 million by 2028. The first figure is an estimate and the second is a forecast, not a guarantee of future sales.

| Product and configuration | Published price context | What the figure does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally with Ryzen Z1 Extreme | $699 in the United States at ASUS’s 2023 announcement | Launch-era price for that configuration; not a current price. |
| ROG Ally with Ryzen Z1 | $599 in the United States at ASUS’s 2023 announcement | Launch-era price for a lower-tier configuration; not directly comparable with newer models. |
| Steam Deck OLED | US starting price displayed on Valve’s official page at research time (October 13, 2026): $789 | Price and availability can change; the page’s current listing should be checked before buying. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Official announcement lists hardware specifications; a comparable current US price was not established here | Do not infer a price from its component list or compare it with the older 2023 launch prices. |
The configurations themselves illustrate why one family can span several prices. ASUS lists the standard ROG Xbox Ally with a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of memory, 512GB storage and a 60Wh battery, while the Ally X uses a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB and 80Wh. More memory, storage and battery capacity raise the bill before considering the processor and display.
How to compare a handheld PC with a console fairly
Start with products available in the same market and on the same date. Then compare the following factors rather than relying on the headline price.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Performance | What frame rates are realistic at the handheld’s normal power setting, and does the game support the chosen resolution? |
| Display | What are the size, resolution, refresh rate, brightness and variable-refresh features? |
| Battery | How large is the battery, and how long does the specific game run under comparable settings? Manufacturer claims are not independent benchmarks. |
| Portability | What are the weight, grip shape, fan noise and charging requirements during actual travel? |
| Operating system | Do you want a console-style interface or the flexibility—and maintenance—of a desktop operating system? |
| Game compatibility | Are the titles you own supported, including anti-cheat systems, launchers, mods and peripherals? |
| Library and storefront | Will your existing purchases transfer, and which store takes the transaction? |
| Total cost | Include a case, dock, charger, storage expansion, subscriptions and the games you expect to buy. |
Battery claims need careful interpretation
Valve describes the Steam Deck OLED as using a more efficient APU and a larger battery than the LCD model, and advertises 30–50% more battery life. That is Valve’s product claim, not an independent laboratory result. Battery life changes with game workload, frame-rate limit, screen brightness, wireless connections, operating-system activity and battery condition. A light 2D game can run much longer than a demanding 3D title, so one advertised range cannot predict every session.

Likewise, a larger battery does not automatically mean a better handheld. It can improve endurance while increasing weight. The useful question is whether the extra runtime matters more to you than a lighter device or a lower purchase price.

Costs that appear after the box is opened
Storage and accessories
Modern games can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes. A 512GB handheld may have substantially less free space after the operating system and recovery partition are installed. A larger SSD or a compatible memory card adds cost, and replacing an internal drive may affect warranty coverage or require careful reinstallation. A dock, spare charger and protective case are optional on paper but practical for many owners.
Software and subscriptions
A PC handheld can access more than one storefront, which may let you use an existing library or shop discounts. It can also require separate launchers, account logins and updates. A console may offer a simpler interface but charge for online multiplayer or bundle access through a subscription. Compare the games and services you will actually use over a year, not an assumed industry-wide average.
Power and travel
High-wattage charging bricks add weight to a travel kit. Some handhelds can charge from common USB-C adapters, but the adapter must provide the required power for full performance. Playing while charging can increase heat and may still drain the battery if the charger is underpowered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy a console can still be the better value
A console is often the better choice when you already own a television, want a quiet living-room system, prefer a fixed interface and mainly play optimized games from one platform. Its larger enclosure can deliver consistent performance without asking you to tune power limits, resolution or fan behavior. First-party support and a unified controller standard may also reduce troubleshooting.

The value calculation changes if you would otherwise buy a gaming laptop, monitor and controller. A handheld PC combines those functions and can connect to a television when docked. The higher initial price then replaces several purchases rather than competing with a bare console alone.
Why a handheld PC can justify its premium
Paying more can make sense if portability is central, you want access to an existing PC library, or you need the flexibility to install mods, alternate storefronts and desktop applications. Suspend-and-resume play, adjustable graphics settings and the ability to use the device away from a television are benefits a conventional console may not provide.
The premium is less compelling if you mostly play demanding games near a wall outlet, dislike managing Windows or another desktop environment, or expect a console-like experience with no configuration. In that case, the extra hardware may be paying for capabilities you will not use.
Common mistakes when judging the price
- Comparing different years: a 2023 launch price and a later-generation OLED price reflect different component costs and market conditions.
- Comparing unlike tiers: match processor class, memory, storage and display features before declaring one device expensive.
- Treating a vendor claim as a benchmark: battery and performance statements need their stated test conditions; do not generalize them to every game.
- Ignoring software access: a low hardware price may be less useful if your purchased games, anti-cheat tools or peripherals are incompatible.
- Assuming every console is subsidized: platform revenue models differ, but the available evidence does not support a blanket claim about hardware losses.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down the games you actually intend to play and check their operating-system, launcher and anti-cheat requirements.
- Set a total budget that includes storage expansion, a charger and any dock or case you need.
- Compare current prices in your country on the same date; do not mix announcement prices with today’s listings.
- Decide whether you value a high-refresh screen, a larger battery, lower weight or maximum performance most.
- Check return, repair and upgrade policies, especially if you may replace the SSD or rely on proprietary parts.
- Use independent tests for noise, thermals and game performance when available, and label manufacturer figures as claims.
The central reason handheld gaming PCs cost more than consoles is that the handheld must deliver a complete, battery-powered computer in a compact body, while the seller may have fewer opportunities to earn money after the hardware sale. That premium is not automatic: matching the products by market, date, performance and total ownership cost reveals when the extra capability is worth paying for.
