Former Rockstar technical lead Obbe Vermeij says the idea became problematic and produced many bugs; he also questioned whether that level of realism mattered enough to players. His retrospective does not identify a specific console hardware bottleneck or explain how the released game’s NPC systems were built.
What Rockstar originally wanted NPCs to do
Producer Leslie Benzies wanted pedestrians to have more than ambient animations: each would have a place to live and a daily schedule that included going to work in the morning. Vermeij says the team worked toward that concept for a while. It was an implementation the developers pursued, not merely an idea that was discussed and immediately dismissed.

Why the schedule system was abandoned
It became difficult to make reliable
Vermeij describes the effort as problematic and recalls, “There were so many bugs.” Neither his account nor the reports of his interview identify the bugs or give details of the prototype’s architecture, so the precise technical failure remains unclear.

The added realism did not seem worth the cost
Vermeij also questioned the player value of giving every pedestrian an individual life and schedule. In his view, players can accept NPCs that feel somewhat fake or shallow. That is his design judgment, not the result of a reported player study.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
The design trade-off is between persistent, individualized routines and a more manageable, dependable game experience. That framing follows from Vermeij’s comments; the coverage does not quantify either side or establish a direct comparison between finished alternatives.
Was console hardware the reason?
The available account does not establish that PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 hardware was the decisive obstacle. It also does not specify a cutoff date, a count of affected NPCs, or a measurable schedule feature that was removed from the released game. Claims that memory, processing power, or a particular console forced the decision go beyond what Vermeij’s reported comments support.

What the account can—and cannot—tell us
GamesRadar+ reported Vermeij’s comments on August 16, 2026, relaying an interview with Edge magazine. iXBT Games reported the account on August 17, 2026, also attributing it to that interview. These are two reports of the same underlying conversation, rather than independent technical confirmation.
- Established: Benzies wanted NPCs to have homes and routines that included commuting to work, and the team worked on the idea.
- Vermeij’s explanation: the effort became problematic, generated many bugs, and did not seem to add enough value to players.
- Not established: the specific bugs, the prototype’s technical design, a hardware cause, or the details of the released game’s NPC simulation.
