Google Translate usually is not generating the predictive words above your keyboard. On a phone, those words normally come from the active keyboard, such as Gboard. Translate converts the text you enter, while the keyboard predicts, autocorrects, or learns words. The fix is therefore to identify where the suggestion appears, verify the keyboard language and layout, then adjust the keyboard’s correction settings. Translate’s web virtual keyboard, Translate’s Android handwriting mode, Gboard’s Translate tool, and iPhone/iPad Gboard have different controls.
First determine what “suggestion” means
The word suggestion can describe several unrelated features. Look at the exact place where the unexpected text appears and what you were doing when it appeared. Do not assume that changing Translate’s source language will change ordinary keyboard predictions; Google’s help pages describe Translate and Gboard suggestions as separate controls.

| What you see | Most likely feature | Where to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| A row of candidate words above the keys while you type in a normal text field | Predictive text, autocorrection, or a learned word from the active keyboard | Gboard (or another installed keyboard) language and Text correction settings |
| Text is converted into another language while you type in another app | Gboard’s separate Translate-as-you-type tool | The Translate tool opened from Gboard, not the normal suggestion strip |
| A different set of keys or characters appears inside Translate on a computer | Translate’s language-specific virtual keyboard | The keyboard menu at the lower left of the Translate text box |
| A handwriting panel appears in the Android Translate app | Translate handwriting input | Translate’s Handwrite mode and its Keyboard button |
This distinction matters because each surface has its own language selector and troubleshooting path. A keyboard can be configured correctly for typing while Translate is still in a different input mode, or vice versa.
How keyboard predictions and Translate interact
When you type into the Android Translate app, Gboard is still the component displaying the keys and the suggestion strip. Gboard can offer a completion, correct a spelling, or show a word it learned from your typing. Translate then receives the text and produces the target-language result. That division means an odd prediction does not prove that Translate has learned your sentence or that its source language is controlling Gboard.

Gboard also includes a deliberate translation tool. Google describes it as translating text while you type in another app. It is separate from next-word prediction: the tool translates the text you enter, whereas the ordinary strip proposes words in the active keyboard language. If you opened that tool accidentally, close it and return to the regular keyboard before changing prediction settings.
Check the input surface before changing settings
Android Translate app
In the Android app, tap the text box and check whether the normal keyboard, a handwriting panel, or another input mode is active. Google’s handwriting instructions are: choose a source and target language, tap the text box, select Handwrite, and write in the panel. Tap the Keyboard button to return to typing. If the Handwrite button is greyed out, handwriting is unavailable for that language. Handwriting mode can look like a keyboard change, but it does not establish that Translate controls Gboard’s prediction dictionary.
Translate website on a computer
The web interface has its own virtual keyboard for some source languages. Select the source language, open the keyboard menu at the lower left of the text box, and choose that language’s keyboard. This on-screen layout is not the same setting as a phone’s predictive suggestion strip. A desktop user should not follow Android Gboard reset instructions unless a phone is actually involved.

In another app, open Gboard’s tools and check whether its Translate tool is active. If the text itself is being converted as you type, you are using that tool. If only a row of possible words is changing, you are seeing normal prediction or correction. Treat those as different problems.
Fix unexpected suggestions on Android with Gboard
1. Confirm the active keyboard language and layout
Gboard languages are independent of the Android device’s display language. You do not need to change the phone’s menus just because you want a different typing language.
- Open any app with a text field so Gboard is visible.
- Check the language indicator on the keyboard and the characters on the keys. Several enabled languages can make predictions appear to come from the wrong language.
- To add or adjust a language, open Gboard Settings → Languages → Add keyboard, choose the language, and select the required layout.
- To switch while typing, touch and hold the space bar. Google also documents switching with the language key when that key is enabled.
If you have many languages enabled, temporarily keep only one or two while diagnosing the problem. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends that smaller active set for smoother typing. You can add the other layouts again after identifying the cause.
2. Review prediction and correction controls
- Open Gboard Settings → Text correction.
- Review the suggestion options shown on your device and the Show suggestion strip setting. When enabled, the strip displays predictive text and word suggestions.
- If the keyboard changes words without asking, review controls such as Smart compose and Auto-capitalization when they are available in your version.
- Test the same phrase in a neutral app, such as a notes field. If the same candidate appears there, the keyboard—not Translate—is producing it.
Labels and the available switches can vary by Gboard and Android version. Use the labels actually displayed on the device rather than looking for a control that may not exist in that release. Turning off the suggestion strip hides the row; it does not necessarily disable every correction behavior, so review the individual correction switches as well.
3. Remove one bad suggestion
For a single unwanted candidate, touch and hold the word in the suggestion strip and drag it to Trash. This is useful when one misspelling or inappropriate learned entry keeps returning and the rest of prediction is helpful.

4. Delete learned words when personalization is the problem
To remove learned entries more broadly, open Gboard Settings → Dictionary → Delete learned words and confirm. This removes personalization data stored by the keyboard, so useful names, abbreviations, and specialist terms that Gboard learned may disappear too. Deleting the dictionary is a broader action than removing one candidate; use it only when the unwanted behavior is widespread or a single-word removal does not help.
5. Use low-impact troubleshooting first
Work from reversible steps toward resets. Google’s troubleshooting sequence includes:
- Restart the device, then test the same text again.
- Update Gboard through Google Play. A mismatch between the keyboard and the operating system can be corrected by an available update.
- If the issue remains, clear Gboard’s cache in Android’s app settings. The exact menu wording differs by Android release, but it is the cache option for the Gboard app, not the Translate app.
- Force-stop and reopen the keyboard or the affected app, then test again.
- As a last resort, clear Gboard storage or data. Google states that clearing data resets Gboard to its default state, so language choices, preferences, and personalization may need to be configured again.
- Reinstall Gboard only if necessary. If it is your only enabled keyboard, make sure a secondary keyboard is available before uninstalling or disabling it so you are not left without an input method.
These are documented remedies, not a guarantee that every unexpected suggestion has the same cause. If prediction is wrong only in Translate but correct in other apps, return to the input-surface checks rather than repeatedly clearing keyboard data.

Gboard’s Translate feature intentionally turns typed text into a selected target language while you type in another app. That output may look like an unexpected suggestion if you did not mean to activate the tool. Open Gboard’s toolbar, identify the Translate tool, and leave it to return to ordinary typing. Then verify the keyboard language and Text correction settings.
Test with a short phrase in a messaging or notes app. A normal suggestion appears in the strip and is optional; Gboard Translate produces translated text in the editing field. This test separates a translation workflow from a prediction workflow without changing any settings.
iPhone and iPad: use the separate Gboard controls
Do not apply Android’s exact paths or gestures to iOS. Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions use a different route:
- Open a text field so Gboard appears.
- Touch and hold the Globe key.
- Choose Settings → Keyboard settings.
- Choose the suggestion types offered for the installed keyboard.
Google notes that suggestions depend on supported languages. The Android Trash gesture, Android learned-word deletion path, and Android cache/data reset should not be assumed to exist or behave identically on iPhone or iPad. If the issue occurs only in the Translate app, first compare it with a normal text field and check which keyboard is selected through the Globe key.

On the Translate website, a language-specific virtual keyboard is an input layout, not predictive text from a phone keyboard. To use it, choose the source language, open the keyboard menu at the lower left of the text box, and select the corresponding language keyboard. If the layout produces unexpected characters, recheck the selected source language and keyboard rather than changing Gboard settings on a phone that is not involved.

If a browser extension or the operating system is supplying a separate prediction strip, test the Translate page in a plain text field or another browser profile. The Translate web instructions establish how to select its virtual keyboard, but they do not make that control responsible for a mobile keyboard’s learned words.
A practical diagnosis checklist
- Where is the text? In a suggestion strip, in the editing box, or in a handwriting panel?
- Which device? Android, iPhone/iPad, or a computer browser?
- Which keyboard? Gboard or another installed keyboard?
- Which language is active? Check the keyboard indicator, not only the phone’s display language.
- Does it happen outside Translate? Test the same phrase in a notes or messaging field.
- Is Gboard Translate open? Distinguish deliberate translation output from a predicted next word.
- Is one word wrong or everything personalized incorrectly? Remove one candidate first; delete learned words only for a broader reset.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: resetting Translate when the keyboard dictionary is responsible, or changing the phone’s display language when only Gboard’s layout needs to change.
Common pitfalls that make the symptom seem worse
Changing the Android display language is not a substitute for changing Gboard’s active language. The two settings are independent, so a phone can show English menus while Gboard is set to Spanish, or show French menus while several keyboard languages are enabled. Likewise, changing Translate’s source or target language does not necessarily alter the keyboard’s prediction dictionary.
Another frequent mistake is testing only inside Translate. Enter the same short, neutral phrase in a notes or messaging field. If the same candidate appears, the keyboard settings are the right place to work. If it appears only in Translate, check whether Handwrite mode or Gboard’s Translate tool is active before deleting learned words.
Do not jump straight to clearing data because a single name is suggested incorrectly. Remove that one candidate first. A full learned-word deletion can also remove useful names and abbreviations, while clearing Gboard storage resets preferences and language choices. Save those disruptive actions for cases that survive the simpler checks.
Reporting a persistent Gboard bug
If the behavior survives language checks, correction-setting changes, an update, and the low-impact troubleshooting steps, report it through Gboard. Google’s Gboard help describes sending a quality bug report from the keyboard’s suggestion strip and submitting feedback through Gboard settings.
Include enough detail for the behavior to be reproduced:

What Google says about Gboard data
Google’s Gboard troubleshooting page states: “Saved words aren’t sent. You can delete saved words at any time.” The same page says searches are sent to Google to obtain results and that usage statistics are sent to improve the product; it says ordinary text typed, such as passwords or chats, is not sent. These are Google’s stated practices, not an independent privacy audit. Deleting learned words removes the saved personalization from the keyboard, but it does not turn off every other Gboard feature.
Why there is no single universal fix
The visible symptom can originate in different layers: a keyboard language or layout, prediction and correction settings, a learned dictionary entry, Gboard’s Translate tool, Translate’s Android handwriting mode, or the Translate website’s virtual keyboard. App and operating-system versions can also change labels and available controls. Until the device, platform, active keyboard, and exact suggestion are identified, no one can responsibly promise that one switch will fix every case.
Start with the least disruptive check that matches the symptom: verify the active Gboard language for a prediction-strip problem, close Gboard Translate for text that is being converted as you type, use Translate’s Keyboard button after handwriting input, or select the web virtual keyboard for a computer. Escalate to cache clearing, data reset, or reinstall only after those distinctions are clear.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my keyboard suggesting the wrong words in Google Translate?
Usually the active keyboard is predicting or autocorrecting words. Check Gboard’s language indicator, enabled layouts, and Text correction settings. Test the same phrase outside Translate to confirm whether the behavior follows the keyboard.
Does Google Translate learn my normal typing?
The documented controls separate Translate from Gboard’s prediction and learned-word features. An unexpected candidate is not proof that Translate learned your sentence. Investigate the installed keyboard unless text is being deliberately translated as you type.
Why are predictions appearing in the wrong language?
Gboard’s active language may differ from the phone’s display language, and several keyboard languages may be enabled at once. Switch with the space bar or language key, and temporarily keep one or two active languages while testing.
How do I stop one inappropriate word from appearing?
On Android Gboard, touch and hold the candidate in the suggestion strip and drag it to Trash. This removes that entry without deleting the entire learned dictionary.
Recommended Free Tools
What happens if I delete learned words?
Gboard removes its saved personalization, including useful names, abbreviations, and specialist terms it learned. It is a broader reset than removing one suggestion, so use it only when the problem is widespread.

Why did Translate switch to handwriting?
In the Android Translate app, Handwrite is a separate input mode. Choose the source and target languages, tap the text box, select Handwrite, and use the Keyboard button to return. A greyed-out Handwrite option means that language does not support handwriting.
Are Android and iPhone Gboard settings the same?
No. On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the Globe key, open Settings → Keyboard settings, and choose the available suggestion types. Android’s Trash gesture, learned-word path, and cache/data controls should not be assumed on iOS.
Should I clear Translate’s data?
Not as a first step when the symptom is a keyboard suggestion. Check Gboard or the selected keyboard first. Android Gboard data clearing resets the keyboard, so reserve it for persistent problems after language, correction, update, and cache checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my keyboard suggesting the wrong words in Google Translate?
Usually the active keyboard is predicting or autocorrecting words. Check Gboard’s language indicator, enabled layouts, and Text correction settings, then test the same phrase outside Translate.
How do I remove one bad Gboard suggestion?
Touch and hold the candidate in the Android Gboard suggestion strip and drag it to Trash.
Why are predictions in the wrong language?
Gboard’s active language is independent of the phone’s display language. Switch with the space bar or language key and temporarily reduce active languages while diagnosing.
How do I return from Translate handwriting to the keyboard?
In Android Translate, tap the Keyboard button in Handwrite mode. If Handwrite is unavailable, the selected language does not support it.

Are iPhone and Android Gboard controls identical?
No. On iPhone and iPad, hold the Globe key, choose Settings → Keyboard settings, and select suggestion types. Android paths should not be assumed on iOS.
The Bottom Line
Most unexpected words come from the active keyboard, not Google Translate. Identify whether you are seeing Gboard prediction, Gboard’s Translate tool, Translate handwriting, or the web virtual keyboard. Then check the keyboard language and Text correction settings, remove a single bad learned word before deleting the dictionary, and reserve cache clearing or data resets for persistent Android problems.
