In a solo game, a pause key stops the simulation until you resume. In a peer-to-peer co-op game, available guides say only the host can pause everyone, but that behavior is not confirmed by an official developer reference. A dedicated server has no player pause command in the documented material; its PauseEmpty setting can stop game time automatically when nobody is online.
Pause behavior by game mode
“Pause” means that game time stops rather than merely hiding the interface. The trigger and authority depend on how the world is hosted.

How to pause a singleplayer game
Try the pause key first
A PZ Manual guide titled “Project Zomboid pause and shout keys: F2, Q and rebinding” identifies F2 as the pause key and says it can be reassigned in Options. A separate guide reports that Esc pauses. Because the available summaries do not establish a single universal default for every build, test the key shown in your own control menu rather than relying on a keyboard chart from another version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Start or load your singleplayer save.
- Open Options from the main menu or the in-game menu.
- Open the keyboard or key-binding section and look for the command labelled Pause.
- Press the displayed key in the world. If it does not pause, return to the binding screen and check whether another command is using the same key.
- Press the same pause key again to continue. The Build 42.21 summary says the game resumes at the speed that was active before pausing; treat that as build-specific until you verify it in your installation.
Rebinding the key
If F2, Esc, or another default conflicts with your keyboard layout, assign a different unused key in Options. Save or apply the change if the menu presents an Apply button, then test it in a low-risk area of the save. A rebinding is local to the game’s control configuration; it does not create a server-side pause command.

When a key appears not to work
- Check the current binding instead of assuming the Build 42.21 mapping still applies. The available summary was secondhand and was not checked against the in-game menu.
- Make sure the game window has focus; a key sent to another application cannot pause the simulation.
- Check for duplicate bindings or a keyboard utility that intercepts function keys.
- Use the menu’s displayed command name, since translated interfaces or later builds may label it differently.
What happens in peer-to-peer co-op
Peer-to-peer co-op is the arrangement in which one player hosts the world from their own game session. The retrieved community summaries say that only this host can pause and that pressing Esc pauses for everyone. They also say pausing is unavailable when the host is offline. None of those multiplayer details is backed by an official Indie Stone document in the available material, so treat them as practical reports rather than guaranteed behavior for every build.
Safest way to test host pausing
- Have the host create the co-op session and invite the other players.
- With everyone connected, have the host press the key assigned to Pause (the reports mention
Esc; the host should verify the assignment in Options). - Ask a client to observe the world while the host is paused. Do not use an active fight or a valuable construction task for this test.
- Press the same key again and confirm that the host and clients continue.
If the client’s world continues, the session is not honoring the reported host-pause behavior. In that case, use the host’s in-game binding screen and the game’s current build information as the authority, because the community summaries do not establish a universal rule.
Host absence is different from pausing
A co-op host being offline is not the same as a paused game. The retrieved summaries state that pausing is unavailable when the host is offline; they do not establish that the world remains frozen, is saved at a particular moment, or can be administered remotely. Do not assume a client can pause or resume a host’s session while the host is away.
Why a dedicated server cannot be paused manually
A dedicated server runs independently of any one player’s game client. In the retrieved server guidance, connected players have no manual pause control for the running world. The documented automation is PauseEmpty: when enabled, the server stops game time while no players are online. This is an empty-server rule, not a button that an administrator can press during an active session.
What PauseEmpty controls
The PZwiki server-settings page shows PauseEmpty=true in an example configuration and describes it as stopping game time when no players are online. With that behavior enabled, the trigger is the server reaching zero connected players. Once someone joins, the condition is no longer “empty,” so the setting is not a way to pause a populated world.
Check the value in your own configuration
Do not assume a universal stock value. The published guidance conflicts:
- Shockbyte says a fresh configuration ships with
PauseEmpty=trueand advises checking before changing it. - Low.ms reports the stock default as
false; that page was approximately 49 days old when retrieved. - A Steam guide for build 38.30 lists
PauseEmpty=false, but that build is old and cannot establish the current default. - XGamingServer uses
PauseEmpty=truein an example without calling it the default.
These differences can result from game-build changes, provider templates, or example files. The reliable procedure is to inspect the INI generated for your own server and build.
- Stop access to the server long enough to inspect its configuration according to your host’s normal administration procedure.
- Open the server INI, commonly called
servertest.ini, and locate the linePauseEmpty=. - Read the value exactly as generated:
trueenables empty-server pausing andfalsedisables it. - If the line is absent, do not invent a default. Consult the configuration generated by your server software or provider for that build.
- After changing a setting, follow the host’s documented reload or restart process and verify behavior with all players disconnected. The available material does not establish whether every host applies an edit immediately.
Where the INI is usually found
A search summary places server INI files in ~/Zomboid/Server/ on Linux and %UserProfile%ZomboidServer on Windows. This location was not verified against an official document, so treat it as a low-confidence starting point. Managed hosts may expose the same file through a web control panel instead of the operating-system path.
Can an administrator pause a populated server?
No pause or resume admin command appeared in the retrieved server material. Granting administrative access does not create one. The documented access command is:
setaccesslevel <name> admin
In a server console, enter the command without a slash. From the in-game chat command interface, the reported form is:
/setaccesslevel <name> admin
Replace <name> with the player name. This changes access level; it is not a pause command. For a populated dedicated server, the available options remain operational controls outside the pause system, such as asking players to log out, or configuring PauseEmpty for periods when nobody is connected. Do not claim that an administrator can freeze an active world with a command unless your server’s own documentation explicitly provides one.

Choosing the right setup for long absences
You play alone
Use the in-game pause key whenever you need to step away. Verify the binding in Options after an update or when switching keyboard layouts. This is the only mode in the supplied material with a direct manual player pause that is consistently reported.
You host a small co-op session
Test the host key with your group before depending on it. Because the host-only and “pause for everyone” behavior is unconfirmed, agree on a safe logout routine for emergencies. A client should not assume they can pause the host’s world independently.
You run a dedicated server
Decide whether unattended simulation should continue. Inspect PauseEmpty in the generated INI, record the value, and test with no players online. Remember that this setting addresses only the empty-server condition; it is not an emergency pause for moderators while players remain connected.
For a hosted Project Zomboid setup, Godlike.Host’s Project Zomboid servers include a Pterodactyl-based game panel, scheduled tasks, up to three free backups a day with restore, and SFTP/FTP access; configure PauseEmpty from the generated INI as described above.
Common misconceptions and failure cases
“The pause key from a guide does nothing”
Different guides identify different keys, and the Build 42.21 mapping was reported secondhand. Open Options and read the binding in your installation. A key chart from build 38.30 or another older release is not proof of your current mapping.
“I changed PauseEmpty, but the server did not freeze”
First confirm that every player, including an administrator or test account, is disconnected. The setting’s trigger is zero online players. Then verify that the server actually loaded the edited INI and that the value is spelled as true or false. Provider templates can overwrite files, and the available sources do not establish a universal reload method, so use your host’s configuration procedure.
“I am an admin, so I should have a pause command”
Administrative access and simulation control are separate. setaccesslevel grants privileges, but no pause/resume command was identified in the retrieved material. Do not substitute an unrelated admin command and expect the world to stop.
“The server is empty, so it must be paused”
Empty status alone does not prove the setting is enabled. The published defaults conflict, and one old guide lists the opposite value from some provider examples. Check the actual line in your generated file and test that server’s behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVersion and source limitations
The available pause claims come from third-party hosting guides, a fan-maintained wiki, and Steam community pages; none is an official Indie Stone reference. The singleplayer key summary specifically concerns Build 42.21 and was not checked against the in-game menu. The co-op host-only behavior is likewise a secondhand report. Treat the game’s current Options screen and the INI generated for your own build as more authoritative than an old key list or provider example.
No published statistic or verified quotation about pause behavior was found. The practical conclusions that are supported are narrower: singleplayer has a manual pause; dedicated servers do not offer a documented player pause and can use PauseEmpty for empty periods; and the default value of that setting must be checked locally because sources disagree.
