What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can be frustrated with Google and still depend on it. The hard part of leaving usually isn’t one app: it’s the accumulated logins, files, devices, recovery details, and shared workflows attached to a Google account. You don’t have to make a clean break to make progress. Identify what you rely on, export and verify what matters, then move one workflow at a time.
Why leaving Google can feel harder than leaving one app
Google services often connect to other parts of a digital life. Gmail may be the recovery address for accounts elsewhere; “Sign in with Google” may be how you access them; Drive files may be shared with colleagues or family; and an Android phone may be configured around the same account. A person can therefore be relying on Google in several places without actively choosing each service every day.

That is a practical kind of lock-in: not proof that your data cannot be moved, but a bundle of dependencies that takes time to untangle. Individual community posts describe users who feel stuck because of accumulated accounts and integrations, but those accounts are anecdotes, not evidence of how common the problem is. One discussion describes successfully leaving the Google ecosystem; another frames the issue as “the real lock-in.”

Google offers ways to move data out, but the available path depends on the account and the mechanism. Google’s Data Portability API policy says: “The Data Portability API provides end users in the European Economic Area (EEA) more control over their data by making it easier to move data out of Google.” The policy also identifies Google Takeout as a related option. This statement is specifically about the API and EEA end users; it should not be read as a description of identical API access worldwide. See Google’s Data Portability API user data and developer policy.

For organizations, Google announced new open-beta administrator options in April 2025 to export organizational data from multiple services, including Gmail, Chat, and Drive. That announcement concerns Workspace administrators, not a general consumer migration workflow. Its open-beta status and availability may have changed since publication, so check the Workspace announcement for current details before planning around it.
An export is a portability step, not proof of a seamless move. The cited materials do not establish that every item, permission, feature, or shared workflow will transfer intact, or that another service will restore the files as usable equivalents. Treat the exported archive as a copy to inspect and preserve. Before depending on a replacement, verify the specific files and workflows you need.

A gradual plan for reducing dependence
You can keep a Google account for the services you still want while moving other tasks elsewhere. A staged change is often more manageable than closing the account first and discovering later that it controls a critical login or recovery path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Map your dependencies. List the Google services you actively use, the devices tied to the account, and external accounts that use Google sign-in or a Gmail address for recovery. Pay special attention to accounts you would struggle to regain.
- Identify what must not be lost. Make a short inventory of irreplaceable email, documents, photos, contacts, and shared files. Note which items need to remain editable or accessible to other people, rather than merely preserved as a copy.
- Choose the export route for your situation. Check the export mechanism available for your account type and region. Google Takeout is identified as a related option in the Data Portability API policy; Workspace administrators should consult the April 2025 announcement for the organizational beta’s current status.
- Export a representative sample first. Start with a manageable subset or a single important category. Open the resulting files and confirm that they contain what you expected; an archive that downloads successfully is not necessarily an archive that meets your practical needs.
- Keep a separate, secure copy. Store the export somewhere other than the Google account you may eventually change. If you use portable electronic media, encrypt it. Google’s policy requires encryption for covered data stored on portable electronic media in contexts involving developers using the API; that is not a universal consumer legal mandate. The policy does not endorse a particular drive or establish any model’s security.
- Test the destination before switching important workflows. Check whether the target service accepts the formats you have, works on the phone and computers you use, supports the sharing or collaboration you need, and has an account-recovery process you can live with. Confirm the ongoing cost and privacy/security model against your requirements rather than assuming a replacement behaves like Google.
- Update high-value recovery details. Once you have tested the new setup, change recovery addresses and sign-in methods on important outside accounts. Keep access to the old Google account until you have confirmed that essential accounts and files no longer depend on it.
Decide what “less Google” means for you
A useful transition does not have to end with deleting every Google service. You might move personal files but keep Gmail for a while, stop using Google sign-in on new accounts, or retain an account for a phone while shifting a shared workflow elsewhere. The right boundary is the one that reduces the friction you actually care about without breaking access you still need.

When comparing a possible replacement, evaluate the function rather than the brand: export and import formats, phone and desktop support, account recovery, privacy and security, collaboration, and total ongoing cost. The sources cited here do not establish current feature-by-feature rankings for alternative providers, so verify those details directly with any service you are considering.
