Why Google Keeps Requiring a reCAPTCHA for Every Search in Firefox

Google’s repeated reCAPTCHA prompt is usually about traffic associated with a network, not proof that Firefox is broken. These checks can help identify whether browser data, an extension, or your connection is involved.

If Google asks you to complete a reCAPTCHA after nearly every search in Firefox, it usually means Google has flagged traffic associated with your network as unusual—not that you personally acted like a bot or that Firefox is necessarily broken. Complete the challenge, then use the checks below to see whether the repeat prompts are tied to saved browser data, an extension, or your network.

What the repeated reCAPTCHA means

Google says the “unusual traffic” message most likely shows a reCAPTCHA. The challenge is a human-verification step that lets you continue searching. Google associates the warning with traffic from a network, which can include a VPN network; the prompt alone does not establish who or what caused that traffic. Google Search Help lists possibilities including automated software, a VPN or IPv6 tunnel, other people using the same network, possible malware, and activity associated with an internet service provider (ISP). Google’s reCAPTCHA FAQ also notes that legitimate users can be affected by shared-network abuse or a suspiciously assigned ISP address.

Google does not publish a numeric detection threshold in this guidance. A CAPTCHA by itself is not evidence that your computer is infected, and it does not prove that Firefox caused the problem.

Try these checks in order

1. Complete the challenge

When a challenge loads, solve it and continue searching. Google says completing the reCAPTCHA clears the message and allows continued use. If the challenge itself will not appear or work, check that your browser supports reCAPTCHA and that JavaScript is enabled, as Google recommends in its troubleshooting guidance.

2. Check whether Firefox keeps Google site data

Review Firefox settings and any privacy or cleanup extensions for options that delete Google cookies or site data when you close the browser. In one Mozilla Support discussion, a user reported that allowing Google cookies stopped the challenge from returning, while clearing cookies and cache brought it back. That is one person’s experience, not a guaranteed fix. You can use a normal window as a comparison with a fresh or private session; if prompts differ, that is a clue about session or site data, not proof of a single cause.

3. Test Firefox without extensions

Temporarily start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode, or disable add-ons for a short test, then try Google Search again. A Mozilla moderator in the same support thread said disabling AdGuard resolved their own case; another participant said the prompts continued with extensions disabled. If the challenge stops, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a possible interaction. If it does not, the cause may lie elsewhere, including the network.

4. Compare browsers and networks

Use a simple comparison to locate where the symptom changes. Try Firefox and another browser on the same network, then—if practical—try Firefox on a different trusted connection. If you use a VPN, proxy, IPv6 tunnel, school or workplace network, or shared connection, compare with an ordinary connection where appropriate. Google specifically identifies VPNs, IPv6 tunnels, and activity from other people sharing a network as possible factors. A browser comparison is only a diagnostic clue: one user’s report that Chrome or Edge behaved differently does not establish a general Firefox defect.

Do not change browser identity or try to bypass the reCAPTCHA as a universal fix. The useful question is whether the prompt follows the browser session, an extension, or the network.

5. Escalate to the party connected to the result

  • Managed or shared network: Ask the school, workplace, or network administrator whether other users are affected.
  • VPN or proxy: If the prompts appear on that connection but not on a trusted alternative, contact the VPN or proxy provider.
  • ISP connection: If the issue follows your ISP connection across browsers and devices, contact the ISP and explain that Google Search repeatedly requests reCAPTCHA verification.

These comparisons can narrow down where to ask for help, but they do not prove which user or event triggered Google’s warning.

6. Treat malware as a possibility, not the default diagnosis

Google includes possible malware among the causes to consider and links to malware detection and removal guidance. Follow that route if you have other signs of unwanted software, such as unexpected pop-ups or unfamiliar programs. Repeated reCAPTCHA prompts alone do not establish an infection.

Does Firefox itself cause the problem?

Mozilla’s reports show that repeated Google challenges have happened to individual Firefox users, but they do not establish a current, universal Firefox fault. In a Mozilla Support thread, reports changed over time: some participants said the prompts stopped, while others later reported that they returned. A separate historical Mozilla Bugzilla report described repeated challenges in Firefox for Android private browsing, but it does not show that all Firefox private sessions cause the issue. Do not attribute your symptoms to a particular Firefox update without evidence matching your version and circumstances.
