Google AI Overviews can be wrong because they combine a language model with Search systems that retrieve and summarize web pages. The model may misunderstand what you asked, miss a qualification in a source, rely on thin or unserious information, or produce a statement that its cited pages do not actually support. Google says these failure modes cannot be eliminated completely. Treat an Overview as a starting point: open its sources, check the exact wording and context, and verify important claims independently.
What Google AI Overviews are—and what they are not
Google describes AI Overviews as a customized language model integrated with its web-ranking systems. For a query that triggers the feature, Search selects information it considers relevant and high quality, then generates a short explanation with links to web pages. This is different from a conventional list of ranked results, but it is also not a guarantee that every sentence is copied or entailed by a source.

Elizabeth Reid, Google’s vice president of Search, explained on May 30, 2024 that Overviews are intended to connect users with useful results and supporting links. She identified three recurring reasons for errors: the system can misinterpret the query, misunderstand a nuance in a web page, or lack enough high-quality information about the subject. Those explanations describe Google’s system and interventions at that time; they do not establish how every Overview performs today.

Why an Overview can be incorrect
The query is underspecified or misunderstood
A short search can hide assumptions about location, date, audience, units, or the meaning of a term. “Is this legal?”, for example, depends on jurisdiction and often on the facts of a specific case. “What is the best treatment?” could refer to prevention, a diagnosis, or an emergency. If the system chooses the wrong interpretation, it can produce a fluent answer to a different question.

Google’s own example was the deliberately unusual query “How many rocks should I eat?” The web contained little serious information about eating rocks but did contain satire and pages that repeated it. A retrieval system can find text that looks relevant without recognizing that it is a joke or that it should never be treated as practical advice.
A source’s nuance is lost during summarization
Web pages frequently qualify claims with words such as “may,” “in this study,” “for adults,” or “not recommended.” A generated summary can drop one of those conditions, merge two separate passages, or turn an example into a general rule. The resulting sentence may sound decisive even though the original author was cautious.
Context can also change the meaning of a passage. A paragraph might quote a false claim in order to refute it, describe an experiment rather than a recommendation, or distinguish correlation from causation. Summarization that preserves the topic but loses the surrounding logic can reverse what the page actually says.

Reliable information is scarce
Some subjects have extensive guidance from agencies, professional bodies, or primary documents. Others are new, obscure, local, or poorly documented. When dependable material is limited, the system has fewer strong sources to triangulate. It may fill gaps with a low-quality page, repeat an unsupported assertion, or combine fragments that were never meant to be read together.
Satire, forum posts, scraped copies, and promotional pages can be especially risky when a topic has little serious coverage. Google reported efforts in May 2024 to detect nonsensical queries, reduce reliance on satire and some user-generated content, and restrict Overviews for queries where they were less helpful. Those were reported changes, not a promise that similar failures cannot occur now.
The language model predicts plausible wording
Google’s public explanation of generative AI says these models predict likely next words. They can therefore produce a coherent, confident paragraph without having a factual guarantee for each statement. Stacey King, Google’s director for Trust, said hallucinations can be reduced but “inaccuracies cannot be 100% prevented since responses are created via a prediction mechanism.” Google also notes that outputs may change over time. A different wording or a later search can lead to a different summary even when the query appears identical.

Why citations and links do not prove that a claim is correct
Opening a citation is essential, but the presence of a link answers only where the system looked—not whether the generated sentence is a faithful representation of that page. A single citation may be displayed beside several claims, and it can be difficult to determine which passage supports which clause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Three distinct checks are needed:
- Entailment: Does the page directly support the exact claim, including numbers, dates, conditions, and exceptions?
- Context: Is the passage describing evidence, opinion, satire, a quotation, or a warning? What do the sentences before and after it say?
- Authority: Is the source the responsible agency, a primary document, a qualified expert, or an unattributed post?
A reputable domain can still be summarized inaccurately. Conversely, a lesser-known domain might contain a correct detail. Source reputation and claim fidelity are related to trust, but they are not interchangeable tests.
What a 2026 study found about unsupported claims
A study by Haofei Xu, Umar Iqbal, and Jacob M. Montgomery examined AI Overviews during a 40-day period from March 13 through April 21, 2026. It covered 55,393 trending queries across 19 topic categories and decomposed the generated answers into 98,020 individual claims. In that sample, 11.0% of claims were not supported by the cited pages.

| Finding | Measured result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Claims unsupported by cited pages | 11.0% | The cited text did not substantiate the generated claim. |
| Claims contradicted by or conflicting with cited content | 4.1% | The source pointed in a different direction or directly disagreed. |
| Claims not addressed in retrieved source text | 7.0% | The cited passage did not discuss the claim at all. |
| Cited domains absent from co-displayed first-page results | 29.8% | Nearly three in ten cited domains were not among the ordinary first-page links shown with the Overview. |
The percentages describe that study’s query set, time window, and claim-checking method. They are not a universal error rate for every Overview, every country, or every type of search. The researchers also reported that cited domains were more credible on average than co-displayed first-page domains, while source quality and whether a claim was faithfully supported were largely independent. In practical terms, a strong-looking list of sources still requires sentence-by-sentence checking.

Wild-mushroom information
The Associated Press reported that Mary Catherine Aime, a Purdue University professor specializing in mycology and botany, reviewed an Overview about wild mushrooms and found important missing context that could make the answer unsafe. AP also reported that repeating the query produced different mushroom descriptions, including a statement Aime judged inaccurate. The lesson is not that every mushroom Overview is wrong; it is that a polished summary and citations cannot substitute for a qualified authority when misidentification could cause poisoning.

AP reported an Overview that repeated a false conspiracy claim about Barack Obama and separately described Google’s response after an Overview surfaced satirical advice about putting glue on pizza. Google said it made changes to reduce comparable problems. These incidents demonstrate that failures happened and prompted interventions; they do not measure how often such failures occur now.

How to investigate two contradictory Overviews
When separate searches produce different answers, do not choose the one that sounds more certain. Compare the underlying evidence in a fixed order:
- Write the disputed claim precisely. Replace vague wording with the exact proposition, quantity, date, or definition you need to verify.
- Open every relevant cited page. Find the passage that supposedly supports the sentence. If no passage addresses it, mark the claim as unsupported rather than inferring support from the page’s title.
- Check publication dates and update dates. A newer regulation, product specification, clinical recommendation, or election result can supersede an older page. Do not assume the newest page is best if it lacks primary evidence.
- Rank sources by responsibility and proximity. Prefer the agency that issued a rule, the original study or filing, an official technical manual, or a named professional body. Use secondary reporting to add context, not to replace the primary record.
- Look for omitted qualifications. Check geography, edition, age group, sample size, exceptions, uncertainty, and whether the source is satire, opinion, or user-generated content.
- Repeat the search with the ambiguity removed. Add the country, date range, model number, medical condition, or legal jurisdiction that the first query left out.
- Escalate unresolved disagreements. If authoritative sources genuinely conflict, describe the disagreement and the evidence behind each position instead of presenting one generated summary as a verdict.
A practical verification workflow
For ordinary factual questions
- Read the Overview once to identify the claims it is making, not to accept its conclusion.
- Open the cited pages in separate tabs and search within each page for the relevant name, number, or phrase.
- Read enough surrounding text to capture conditions and exceptions.
- Confirm the key point with at least one independent, authoritative source when the information could have changed.
- Record the source date and the exact wording you verified; this prevents a later change in the Overview from silently changing your understanding.
For health, safety, legal, financial, or emergency decisions
- Do not use an AI Overview as the sole basis for an action that could cause injury, delay treatment, create legal exposure, or result in a substantial financial loss.
- Consult the relevant professional or official guidance: a clinician, poison-control service, emergency authority, regulator, lawyer, or licensed financial professional as appropriate.
- Use the Overview only to discover terminology and possible sources, then verify the decision-critical detail in those sources.
- If symptoms, danger, or an emergency are involved, contact local emergency services rather than continuing to compare generated answers.
What “contradictory” can mean
Two Overviews may appear to disagree while answering different versions of the question. One may use a current rule and another an outdated page; one may describe a general case while another assumes a particular location; or one may report a study result while the other states a recommendation. Before calling the system inconsistent, align the definition, date, jurisdiction, population, and source type.
After those variables are aligned, a real contradiction is possible: generated text can conflict with a cited passage, and repeated queries can yield different descriptions. Treat that inconsistency as a prompt to inspect the original evidence. Search rankings and generated summaries can change across queries and over time, so a previous answer is not a permanent record of what Google will display.

What Google’s safeguards can—and cannot—do
Google’s May 2024 changes targeted several known patterns: nonsensical questions, satire, some user-generated material, and queries for which an Overview was judged less useful. These safeguards can lower exposure to obvious problems, but they do not remove the underlying prediction mechanism or guarantee that a nuanced, high-stakes claim will be summarized correctly.
Google has not published a current, universal accuracy percentage for all AI Overviews. The available examples, company explanations, and 2026 study each answer a different question: how failures can arise, how particular failures were handled, and what one measured sample contained. None should be stretched into a claim about every search.
The bottom line for everyday use
Google AI Overviews are useful for orientation and for finding documents, but they are not an authority layer that makes every linked claim true. The safest habit is simple: identify the exact assertion, open the cited source, read its context and date, compare an independent authoritative reference, and seek professional guidance for consequential decisions. A confident tone, a plausible explanation, or several links is not evidence by itself.
