A stronger dollar can make dollar-priced gold more expensive for overseas buyers, while investors seeking safety may choose dollars instead of gold. Real interest rates, uncertainty, central-bank purchases and other sources of demand can reinforce or outweigh those effects.
How a stronger dollar can weigh on gold
Gold can cost more in other currencies
Gold is commonly quoted in U.S. dollars. If the dollar appreciates and the dollar price of gold stays unchanged, buyers using other currencies face a higher local-currency price. That can reduce their purchasing power or willingness to buy, putting downward pressure on demand and, potentially, the dollar price of gold. The effect is not automatic: the gold price itself can adjust, and demand varies across markets.

Investors may choose dollars over gold
In periods of uncertainty, both gold and the U.S. dollar can attract safe-haven demand. When investors favor dollars, that demand may compete with investment demand for gold. These are separate channels: currency conversion affects the cost to non-U.S. buyers, while portfolio choices affect which assets investors hold. The World Gold Council discussed both mechanisms during the dollar’s 2022 surge. Its September 2022 commentary said the dollar index was up 15% during that year through publication—a historical figure, not a current reading. World Gold Council, September 2022.
Why the relationship is not dependable in every period
Gold prices reflect several forces at once. The World Gold Council reported a consistently negative relationship between gold in U.S. dollars and the U.S. dollar real exchange rate in weekly data from January 1971 through March 2018, while noting that the dollar does not explain gold’s movements entirely. That historical relationship should not be treated as a mechanical forecast for a particular day or year. World Gold Council, “Investment Update: Gold tracks the dollar as rates take a back seat,” 22 April 2018.

Real yields change gold’s opportunity cost
Gold does not pay interest or other income. When real yields—the return on bonds after inflation—rise, investors may find interest-bearing assets more attractive relative to gold. That can weigh on gold alongside a stronger dollar. But neither factor determines the outcome on its own; risk, expectations and demand can counteract them.
Demand can outweigh dollar and yield pressure
In 2022, gold recorded a small gain even as the dollar rose by more than 8% and 10-year U.S. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) yields increased by more than 250 basis points. The World Gold Council attributed gold’s resilience to diverging demand, including strong retail demand and exceptional central-bank net buying, despite weak institutional demand. This is an example of other forces offsetting the usual headwinds, not evidence that dollar strength or higher real yields never matter. World Gold Council, December 2022.

What recent long-run analysis says—and what it does not
A July 2026 World Gold Council analysis used quarterly data from Q1 1971 through Q2 2026. In its regression, dollar return—defined as the log change in the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY)—had a coefficient of -0.93 across the full sample of 222 observations and -1.2 in the high-inflation subsample of 72 observations. These are model coefficients, not percentages, standalone forecasts or guaranteed price responses. They come from a multi-factor analysis and should not be mixed with the 2018 weekly correlation, which used a different dollar measure, time window and method. World Gold Council, July 2026.

When gold and the dollar move in opposite directions, that pattern alone does not establish what caused the move. A useful comparison looks at the same period and checks several factors together:

- Dollar measure and direction: Identify whether the comparison uses DXY, a trade-weighted index or a real exchange-rate measure. Different measures are not interchangeable.
- Real yields: Check whether inflation-adjusted yields rose or fell, since they affect the opportunity cost of holding gold.
- Risk and uncertainty: Consider whether investors were seeking safety, and whether that demand favored dollars, gold or both.
- Demand evidence: Look for information on investment flows, central-bank activity and regional physical buying. These can diverge from one another.
- Observation window: Compare like with like. A daily move and a quarterly relationship answer different questions.
The World Gold Council’s analysis documents changing relationships among these factors, but a broad historical pattern cannot by itself identify the cause of an individual price move. World Gold Council, July 2026.
