GIFs can look blurry, banded, or grainy because the format can represent no more than 256 colors in an image. That limited palette forces color-rich photos and smooth gradients to approximate their original colors. Animated GIFs can also grow large: their size depends on factors such as pixel dimensions, frame count, and how much changes between frames. The best fix depends on whether you need a still image or animation, and on what your publishing platform supports.
Why GIFs can look blurry or grainy
GIF uses palette-based color and LZW compression. The U.S. Library of Congress describes GIF as using “LZW compression and palette-based color (256 or fewer shades),” and The National Archives also documents its maximum of 256 colors. Library of Congress: GIF Graphics Interchange Format, Version 89a; The National Archives: Graphics Interchange Format 89a.

When a source contains more colors than the GIF palette can hold, the conversion has to approximate them. Smooth gradients may show visible steps or bands, while fine photographic detail may look less faithful. This color reduction happens before compression: LZW can preserve the indexed image data without restoring colors that were discarded or approximated during export.
Dithering is often used to simulate colors a limited palette cannot represent. It can make transitions look smoother, but the added pixel pattern may also look textured or grainy. The appearance and file size depend on the original image and export settings; no single palette or dithering choice guarantees both the smallest file and the best-looking result. When GIF’s limits are most visible
Photographs and smooth gradients tend to expose palette limitations because they contain many subtle color variations. GIF is generally a better fit for simple graphics with a limited palette and hard edges. Google’s web.dev guide notes that GIF’s reduced palette can cause an obvious quality reduction and that the format is efficient for simple images with limited colors and hard edges. web.dev: Image formats — GIF.
Why an animated GIF can have a large file size
Lossless compression does not mean every GIF will be small. It means the compression preserves the indexed image data it receives; it does not undo palette-related quality loss or guarantee a compact result. Animated GIFs encode successive images, with a delay possible for each image. Larger pixel dimensions and more frames mean more image data, while broad or complex changes between frames can be harder to compress than simple, mostly unchanged areas.

Dithering can also affect the result: a textured pattern may make a gradient look less banded, but it can add visual complexity. That means reducing colors, changing dithering, or simplifying motion can alter both appearance and size, so compare exported versions rather than assuming one setting is always best.

How to improve a GIF’s appearance or reduce its size
- Match the canvas to its display size. Export at the dimensions the placement actually needs instead of storing extra pixels. Fewer pixels mean less image data, but resizing can soften detail if done poorly; inspect the result at the intended display size.
- Remove unnecessary frames or duration. Keep the frames needed to communicate the motion. Since an animated GIF encodes successive images, removing unneeded frames can reduce the amount of content to store.
- Simplify colors and motion where possible. Consider a flatter background, fewer gradients, or less full-frame change if those compromises still work for the image. GIF is best suited to simple graphics with limited colors and hard edges.
- Compare palette and dithering settings together. Fewer colors may reduce data but make banding more visible; dithering may soften color steps but introduce texture. Check both the file size and the visual result for each candidate export.
- Consider a different format when GIF is a poor fit. For a still image, PNG may be suitable: the W3C describes PNG as a patent-free replacement for GIF and specifies indexed color up to 256 colors. For photographic animation or video, consider a modern video or animated-image format only if the destination supports it. W3C: PNG Specification.
How to choose an export format
There is no universally best substitute for GIF across every platform. Choose based on the image and its destination rather than file size alone.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Visual fidelity | Photos, fine detail, and smooth gradients make palette-related compromises more apparent. |
| File size | Dimensions, frame count, image complexity, and export choices affect how much data must be stored. |
| Animation and playback | Check whether the destination supports the format and whether its playback behavior suits the use. |
| Edges and transparency | For a still graphic, consider whether crisp edges and transparency are important to the result. |
| Platform compatibility | A smaller or more faithful file is not useful if the publishing platform or intended audience cannot use it. |
