Confirm who sponsors it, who may enter, what the prize really is, and how winners are contacted. Never pay a fee or provide bank or credit-card details to claim a prize.

Look for the promotion on the company’s official website or verified social account, then follow its link to the promotion’s own official rules. Check that the sponsor named in those rules matches the company behind the page or account. A real brand name or logo on a post alone does not establish that the offer is genuine.

Rules apply to individual promotions, not to shoe giveaways as a category. For example, Foot Locker’s sneaker launch rules describe a store drawing for an opportunity to buy a shoe. They should not be treated as the standard terms for every sweepstakes.

Read the current rules for the specific offer rather than relying on a social post, a past promotion, or another company’s terms. Look for these details:

- Dates: When entries open and close, including any time zone stated.
- Eligibility: Location, age, membership, and other entry requirements.
- Entry method and limits: How to enter and whether entries are limited.
- Prize and selection: What is awarded, how a winner is selected, and any odds language.
- Winner process: How potential winners are notified, how long they have to respond, and what identity or eligibility checks apply.
Requirements can differ even between promotions involving shoes. One Foot Locker help-page version specifies FLX membership and eligibility in the contiguous 48 states. ASICS’ Everyday Wearer Survey Sweepstakes rules set out that promotion’s own U.S. residency and age conditions. These examples are not substitutes for checking the live terms of the offer you want to enter.
Make sure the prize is actually a free pair
“Sneaker giveaway” can describe different things. In the Foot Locker launch drawing, a selected entrant receives the right to purchase the sneaker at launch—not a free pair—and must appear at the store with matching photo ID. The cited rules say no purchase is necessary to enter, but the opportunity offered is still a right to buy.

Before entering, check the prize description and any collection requirements. Look for whether the shoes are free, whether a purchase is required to receive them, and whether you must attend in person or meet requirements involving size selection or identification. Do not assume one promotion’s terms apply to another.
Verify winner messages and avoid prize scams
A message can use a real company’s name while coming from an impersonator. The Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers may pose as recognizable organizations and that requests for money or financial details are warning signs. As the FTC puts it: “But no real sweepstakes company will contact you asking for money to claim a prize.” Read the FTC’s guidance on fake prize, sweepstakes, and lottery scams.

- Find the company’s contact information independently and ask whether the promotion and notification are real.
For a giveaway promoted on social media, verify the account and offer through the company’s official channels before clicking or replying. The FTC explains how to spot and avoid social media giveaway scams. Suspected fraud can be reported at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If you are deciding between promotions, compare their actual rules rather than judging by the prize photo or the number of comments on a post.
