Why German Industrial Orders Fell 10.6% in August 2026

Germany’s 10.6% August order decline was dominated by a reversal in large transport-equipment orders. Excluding large-scale orders, orders slipped 0.1% month on month, though the three-month trend was weaker.

German manufacturing orders fell 10.6% in August 2026 from July, but the drop was driven almost entirely by a sharp reversal in orders for other transport equipment after unusually large contracts boosted July’s total. Excluding large-scale orders, new orders slipped just 0.1% month on month. The underlying picture is mixed: the three-month trend was weaker when those large orders are excluded.

Why did German industrial orders fall in August 2026?

The main reason was a swing in orders for other transport equipment, which includes ships, railway rolling stock and aircraft. In July, orders in that sector surged 129.4% month on month after an exceptionally high volume of large orders. In August, they fell 61.5%. Destatis said the sector’s decline accounted for almost all of the negative movement in manufacturing orders.

That makes the 10.6% headline fall unusually sensitive to the comparison with July. It does not mean orders across German manufacturing broadly collapsed by that amount: excluding large-scale orders, the August monthly decline was 0.1%.

What the August figures show

Destatis reported that real, price-adjusted new orders in manufacturing were 10.6% lower than in July, on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis. They were 2.7% higher than in August 2025 on a calendar-adjusted basis. The August results are provisional. These figures describe different comparisons: the monthly figure tracks short-term change, while the annual figure compares with the same month a year earlier.

Measure August 2026 result Comparison basis
Total manufacturing orders -10.6% Month on month, seasonally and calendar adjusted
Orders excluding large-scale orders -0.1% Month on month
Total manufacturing orders +2.7% Year on year, calendar adjusted
Other transport equipment orders -61.5% Month on month, seasonally and calendar adjusted

Were orders still up over three months?

It depends on whether large-scale orders are included. Across June to August 2026, manufacturing orders were 1.3% higher than in the preceding three months overall. Excluding large-scale orders, however, they were 2.6% lower. The near-flat August monthly figure excluding large orders therefore should not be mistaken for a strong underlying trend: over the three-month window, the adjusted measure was weaker.

Which industries and markets weakened?

The monthly decline extended beyond the transport-equipment swing. Capital-goods orders fell 15.3%, intermediate-goods orders fell 2.6%, and consumer-goods orders fell 7.3%. Domestic orders dropped 17.3%, while foreign orders decreased 5.4%; orders from both the euro area and countries outside it fell 5.4% and 5.5%, respectively.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy interpreted the domestic capital-goods decline in the context of earlier increases associated with government large orders, and noted that state procurement has contributed to recent volatility. That is the ministry’s interpretation of the movements, rather than a separate finding in the statistical index. Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, 6 October 2026.

Why orders and production moved in different directions

Destatis’s press-release listing on 7 October reported that German industrial production rose 2.0% month on month in August 2026. That does not contradict the fall in new orders: orders measure incoming demand, while production measures output that was actually made. Production can reflect work already in the pipeline, so the two indicators need not move together in a given month. Destatis press-release listing.

How to read the order index

Destatis reports the order index in real, price-adjusted terms. Its monthly comparisons are seasonally and calendar adjusted; year-on-year comparisons are calendar adjusted. The index covers selected manufacturing branches classified under WZ 2008, uses 2021 as its base year, and applies X13 JDemetra+ for seasonal and calendar adjustment.

Detailed series are available in GENESIS-Online series 42151-0004 for new orders, series 42151-0008 for new orders excluding large-scale orders, and series 42152-0004 for turnover. Destatis also provides an Economic Dashboard.
