Blue LEDs rely on gallium nitride (GaN), but making GaN conduct electricity in the required p-type form is difficult. A 2015 computational study proposed that, at low dopant concentrations, nitrogen vacancies can compensate divalent dopants such as magnesium instead of allowing useful free holes to form. The result offers a possible explanation for a materials-science “trap”—not a complete account of how commercial blue LEDs are manufactured.
Why do blue LEDs need p-type GaN?
A functioning LED needs layers with different electrical behavior: an n-type layer supplies electrons, while a p-type layer supplies holes—missing electrons that act as positive charge carriers. When electrons and holes meet in the device, their recombination can produce light. GaN is central to commercial blue LEDs, but creating its p-type layer has proved challenging.

Magnesium (Mg) is the established dopant used to make GaN p-type. Introducing Mg does not automatically produce mobile holes: acceptors may fail to ionize efficiently, and defects or impurities can compensate for the intended carriers. As John Buckeridge put it in a 2015 interview with Chemistry World, “It’s difficult to produce p-type gallium nitride.”
What trap did the 2015 study propose?
In a paper published in Physical Review Letters on January 7, 2015, J. Buckeridge and colleagues calculated defect formation and ionization energies for GaN doped with divalent metals. Their model accounted for both hole localization and dipolar polarization of the host material. They concluded that nitrogen vacancies—not free holes—act as shallow compensating centers in the low-concentration system they studied. The paper’s abstract and publication record describe the calculation and its conclusion.

The proposed picture is that an Mg atom substituting for gallium can hold on tightly to the hole associated with it. Buckeridge described the Mg substitution as “a very deep trap for the hole it produces,” according to Chemistry World’s account. In that account, the trapped hole is followed by nitrogen-vacancy formation; the vacancies can also trap holes, further compensating the doping.
This is a calculated mechanism, not a direct observation of every step in LED production. It helps explain how divalent dopants might fail to yield mobile holes in dilute GaN, but it does not establish that this sequence is the sole cause of difficult p-type activation.

What do the reported energy values mean?
The study discusses spectroscopic features and earlier measurements as context; these figures should not be mistaken for new experimental measurements made by the authors.

Does this explain p-type activation in commercial LEDs?
Not by itself. The paper’s conclusion concerns low-concentration divalent-metal doping. Its authors and the contemporaneous account both identify the need for more work at the higher concentrations relevant to p-type activation. Chemistry World also quotes Christian Kisielowski cautioning that dilute defect concentrations differ from those used in devices.

Other explanations had been proposed before this study, including defect complexes and hydrogen impurities. The 2015 calculation adds a specific nitrogen-vacancy compensation mechanism; it does not show that these other effects are absent, nor does it settle how they interact at device-relevant Mg concentrations. The important distinction is between a mechanism supported by calculations in a dilute model and a complete explanation of manufacturing-scale p-type GaN.

What the study contributes—and what it leaves open
- Contribution: It identifies nitrogen vacancies as shallow compensating centers in the modeled low-concentration GaN system, incorporating hole localization and host polarization in the defect energetics.
- Possible relevance: The mechanism may help interpret the 3.46 eV photoluminescence feature and related spectroscopy.
- Open question: Whether the same explanation accounts for Mg behavior and successful p-type activation at concentrations used in commercial devices remains unresolved by this study.
