The same game can show different prices because the editions may include different content, storefronts and publishers can set prices separately for platforms and markets, and taxes or temporary sales affect the amount you see. A fair comparison matches the edition, platform, region, currency, tax treatment, and date—not just the game title.
Why different editions cost different amounts
Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate are package labels, not universal definitions. A higher tier may include an expansion, downloadable content (DLC), in-game currency, cosmetics, a soundtrack, or other bonus material. The extra price reflects the listed package, but the label alone does not tell you what is included.

Before paying more, compare the itemized content and check whether an add-on requires the base game. For example, the Steam listing for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred presents Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions with additional expansion access and bonus items in higher tiers. It illustrates how packages differ; its prices and promotions can change, so it is not a price benchmark.

Why prices differ between PC and console
Prices are managed through platform-specific systems, and a publisher may also announce different suggested prices by platform. Microsoft’s publishing guidance describes a base price, market conversions, and optional market overrides; it does not establish why a particular game has a specific price on each platform. Microsoft’s Store pricing guidance describes the configuration options.

A dated example shows why platform comparisons need context: on May 8, 2025, Urban Games announced suggested retail prices for Transport Fever 3 of $49.99 / €49.99 for the PC Standard Edition and $59.99 / €59.99 for the console Standard Edition. Its announced Deluxe prices were $64.99 / €64.99 for PC and $74.99 / €74.99 for consoles. These were publisher-announced suggested prices on that date, not verified current checkout prices or a rule for other games. Urban Games’ announcement
An observed PC-console gap does not, by itself, prove that platform fees, production costs, or hardware costs caused it. The pricing controls and the final amount are specific to the title, platform, storefront, and market.

Why the same game can cost less in another country
Regional prices are not necessarily simple conversions of one currency into another. Epic Games Store Support says its suggested regional prices draw on regional exchange rates, local purchasing power, and industry experience. Epic reports support across more than 190 countries and over 30 territories; that describes the scope of regional-pricing support, not the number of distinct prices any one game has. Steam also uses regional USD price groups where native-currency prices are unavailable. According to Steamworks, currencies that are not live are not used for customer store purchases; where Steam lacks a supported native currency, it presents and charges in USD, except in countries geographically within Europe, where it uses euros. Steamworks also documents region groups where developers can offer different, usually discounted, USD prices. Steamworks currency guidance and Steamworks regional pricing

These systems let publishers and developers set prices that account for market conditions rather than applying one universal exchange-rate formula. The exact configuration for a game is not established by general platform guidance.
Why exchange rates do not always change a listed price
Currency conversion does not necessarily update every existing price automatically. Microsoft says conversion rates used for base prices are adjusted periodically, but existing wholesale or suggested retail prices do not change solely because those rates have been updated; publishers must make adjustments. The same guide reports reach across more than 200 markets, a figure describing the Microsoft Store’s market reach—not availability or a distinct price for a particular game. - An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Why the displayed price may differ from checkout
Tax treatment varies by store and market, so the listing price may not be the final total. In its comparison of Steam and the Fenris Store, EVE Online Support says Steam includes applicable regional tax in its displayed price, while the Fenris Store may add VAT or other taxes at checkout. This describes those stores in applicable markets; it is not a universal rule for all game storefronts. EVE Online Support’s store comparison
Where tax or payment-currency conversion may be added later, use the checkout total for comparison rather than assuming the initial listing is the amount charged.

How to compare two game listings fairly
- Match the game and edition. Check the exact edition name, included expansions, DLC, currency, cosmetics, and other bonus content. Look for any base-game requirement.
- Match the platform and storefront. Compare PC with PC or console with the same console platform, and note which store is selling it. Prices can be configured through separate platform systems.
- Match the region and currency. Check the storefront region and the currency actually shown or charged. Regional pricing may reflect more than a direct exchange-rate conversion.
- Check tax and the final amount. See whether applicable tax is included in the displayed price or added at checkout, then compare the total you would pay.
- Compare at the same time. Confirm whether either listing is on a temporary sale. Microsoft distinguishes temporary sale pricing from permanent price changes, so a short-term discount should not be mistaken for the regular price. Microsoft’s Store pricing guidance
What a price difference does—and does not—tell you
A higher price can reflect a larger edition package, a platform-specific price, regional pricing choices, tax treatment, or a sale ending on one listing. More than one factor can apply at once. A comparison is meaningful only after the relevant details are aligned.
There is no established market-wide statistic for the typical price gap between editions, platforms, or regions in the sources cited here. The individual examples show how differences can occur; they do not establish an average or explain every listing.
