Choose Halo Infinite if you want a distinct shooter campaign alongside free multiplayer with matchmaking, Forge, custom games and Firefight. Choose Destiny 2 if you want a connected world built around campaigns, character progression, co-op activities, raids and PvP. Its wider activity mix comes with more complicated paid-content access—and Bungie says planned live-service content updates ended with the June 9, 2026 update.
There is no evidence-based overall winner for campaign quality or how either game feels to play. The practical choice is which format and access model better suits you.

How campaign access differs
Halo Infinite: one separately accessed campaign
Halo Infinite’s multiplayer and Academy are free, but the campaign is a separate purchase or is included with some Xbox Game Pass memberships. Check the Xbox listing for current plan eligibility. A physical disc grants the full game, including the campaign, according to Halo Support. The free multiplayer download alone does not include the story. On Steam, campaign access must be purchased through Steam.
The campaign supports solo play and online co-op with up to three other fireteam members, as well as mission replay, according to the Steam listing. That supports choosing it for a defined campaign with co-op; it does not establish a campaign length or comparative story quality.

Destiny 2: free entry, with campaigns and activities split across content
Destiny 2 is free to start, but that does not unlock every campaign or activity. Bungie’s content guide lists the New Light questline and story content for Shadowkeep and Beyond Light among the free content, along with selected activities. Paid expansions unlock their campaigns and associated content, which can include exotic missions and raids. Other activities can also depend on campaign progress or power level.
Bungie’s Destiny 2: The Collection page describes bundles containing expansions, packs, dungeons and raids, with access details and exclusions. Treat the page as a current catalog, not a permanent promise: editions and available content can change. Check the contents and exclusions of the specific edition before buying.
Which campaign model fits?
- Pick Halo if you want a conventional campaign purchase, or qualifying Game Pass access, separate from free multiplayer.
- Pick Destiny 2 if you are comfortable starting free and choosing which expansions to buy as you pursue its connected campaign and activity catalog.
What you get in multiplayer
Halo Infinite: free competitive play and creation tools
Halo’s free multiplayer includes Academy, Custom Games and Forge, according to Halo Support. The Xbox Store listing describes ranked modes, Forge creations, Custom Games and Firefight: King of the Hill, and states there are over 70 maps in matchmaking. That is the storefront’s stated count, accessed October 3, 2026—not an independently audited map count—and may change.
Recommended Free Tools
Halo is the more straightforward fit if your priority is free arena-style matchmaking, making or playing custom maps, and modes you can access without buying a campaign.
Destiny 2: PvP within a wider shared-world activity mix
Destiny 2 combines competitive play with co-op and PvE. Bungie describes strikes, raids, PvP, classes and gear as parts of its shared-world shooter. Its support pages document Crucible playlists such as Control, Elimination, Rumble and Survival, alongside Gambit, strikes, raids, dungeons and other activities. Access varies: some content is free, while other activities require particular expansions, campaign progress or a power level.
That breadth suits players who want PvP alongside fireteam adventures, raids and gear progression, rather than a primarily arena-multiplayer choice. It also means checking access conditions for the particular activity you want.

Destiny 2’s current update status
Bungie announced on May 21, 2026, that Update 9.7.0, released June 9, 2026, would be the final planned live-service content update for Destiny 2. The game remains playable, and Bungie allows for possible stability hotfixes; this is not an announcement that servers are shutting down. The change matters if ongoing new content is a major reason you play live-service games. Bungie’s announcement is “Destiny 2: Every End is a New Beginning.”

Which one should you choose?
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A distinct campaign plus free multiplayer | Halo Infinite | The campaign is separately purchased or available through some Game Pass memberships; multiplayer, Academy and Forge are free. |
| Free arena-style matchmaking and custom maps | Halo Infinite | Its free multiplayer includes Custom Games and Forge as well as matchmaking. |
| A broad mix of PvP, co-op, PvE and raids | Destiny 2 | It spans Crucible, fireteam activities, raids, dungeons and gear progression, with access varying by content ownership and progress. |
| Multiple connected campaigns to pursue over time | Destiny 2 | Free story content is available, while paid expansions open additional campaigns and related activities. |
| A game with planned ongoing live-service content updates | Neither is established by these sources | Bungie says Destiny 2 has no planned live-service content updates after June 9, 2026; the available information does not establish Halo Infinite’s future roadmap. |
Current regional prices and sales can vary, so compare the relevant platform storefront’s price and included-content list before purchasing. The deciding trade-off is simple: Halo keeps campaign and free multiplayer distinct, while Destiny 2 offers a larger shared-world activity structure that requires more attention to content ownership and progression.
