Why Game Character Models Look Different in Trailers and Gameplay

Character models can differ between trailers and gameplay because footage type, camera distance, detail settings, lighting, and gameplay readability all affect the final image.

Game character models can look different in trailers because the footage may be pre-rendered or staged as a cinematic, while interactive gameplay has to meet performance and visual-clarity needs. Even when both use the same game engine and assets, their camera, lighting, detail settings, and sometimes the models themselves can differ.

First identify what kind of footage you are comparing

A trailer is not automatically a recording of ordinary gameplay. It may contain pre-rendered video, a real-time cinematic, gameplay capture, or a mixture of these. The distinction matters because each can be produced under different technical and visual constraints.

Pre-rendered cinematics

A pre-rendered cinematic is rendered into a video file rather than generated interactively on the player’s device. That lets a studio control the final image and apply post-production work separately from the game’s real-time rendering. BioWare says its work on Mass Effect Legendary Edition included re-rendering pre-rendered cutscenes in 4K where possible and upscaling original video where it was not. The team also describes color correction and adding or compositing details and effects.

Real-time cinematics

“In-engine” or “real-time” means the scene is rendered by the game engine; it does not mean it must look exactly like normal play. The Coalition told Unreal Engine that Gears Tactics cinematics use in-game assets and run in real time, while also describing extra lighting and shadows and higher-quality character heads for those scenes. A cinematic can therefore use the game’s technology and recognizable assets yet still receive a different quality budget and camera treatment.

Gameplay capture

Gameplay capture shows interactive play, but its appearance still depends on the build, platform, graphics settings, and camera used for the recording. Those details are not always disclosed in a trailer, so the label alone cannot establish how the game will look on every player’s system.

Why the character model itself may change

Games can switch among versions of a character model to balance detail, memory use, and performance. The versions may be designed to represent the same character while using different amounts of geometry or texture detail.

Distance and level of detail

Level-of-detail systems, often called LOD, use less detailed models when a character is farther from the camera or occupies less of the screen. A close-up can use a more detailed version; a distant gameplay view can use a simpler one that is less demanding to render.

PlatinumGames character modeler Kotegawa explained that models can be changed during play for LOD, close-ups, facial expressions, and actions focused on hands in “Character Modeling in Anarchy Reigns”. The studio described giving the controlled character more detail than enemies and other players, and selectively changing models to show faces or hands more clearly.

The Gears Tactics team described a comparable, game-specific setup: its LOD0 model was used in cinematics and gameplay close-ups on high or ultra settings, while progressively reduced LODs served the more distant isometric gameplay camera. Lower specifications used a more reduced LOD hierarchy. EA’s Frostbite team also describes automated LOD generation as a way to make models more efficient while preserving their shape in its SIGGRAPH 2018 account. These are examples of techniques, not evidence that every game uses the same system.

Scene-specific faces, hands, or expressions

A close-up or a hand-focused action may call for more visible detail than a standard gameplay view. A studio can swap in a more expressive or detailed model for that scene, or change a model to make an expression read more clearly. That does not necessarily mean the trailer depicts a wholly different character; it can be a tailored version for a particular shot or action.

Why gameplay often uses different visual settings

Gameplay must render continuously on the player’s hardware and keep important action legible. Trailers and cinematics can prioritize composition and presentation in ways that are not practical—or desirable—for every interactive frame.

Performance and scalable detail

Materials, textures, shadows, and model complexity all use computing resources. Developers may offer scalable settings or reduce detail at distance so the game can meet its performance targets across supported hardware. The Gears Tactics account describes scalable materials and texture quality, as well as streaming higher-quality textures for cinematic views and reducing quality for objects that take up less screen space as the camera pulls back.

Those trade-offs are specific to each game. For example, Riot engineer Brandon “mochi” Wang wrote that VALORANT targets a frame render time of 6.9 milliseconds or less for a 144 FPS quality bar in “VALORANT Shaders and Gameplay Clarity”. That is a VALORANT-specific target, not a universal budget for games. Riot’s account also explains that graphics options can affect readability and that the game avoids dynamic shadows in playable spaces because settings that remove them could otherwise remove useful information.

Readability and animation

Gameplay art has to communicate what a character is doing, where they are moving, and sometimes what state they are in. Nintendo developers have described how animation in Super Mario Bros. Wonder balances visible facial expression with a clear direction of travel. They also said some expressions that were difficult to achieve with joints were made by replacing models. That is a gameplay-driven design choice: clarity and animation can matter as much as surface detail.

Why the same model can look different

A model’s appearance is only part of the image. The camera, lighting, material response, shadows, color treatment, and post-processing can make the same underlying asset look noticeably different.

  • Camera and framing: A close cinematic shot reveals facial and surface details that a distant gameplay camera hides.
  • Lighting and shadows: A different light direction or shadow treatment changes the shape and contrast of a face, clothing, or armor.
  • Materials and textures: Surface response and texture resolution influence how skin, fabric, and metal appear.
  • Color and post-processing: Color correction, depth of field, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, and composited effects can alter the final image without changing the base model.

BioWare’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition account describes cinematic adjustments including color correction, composited effects, improved lighting and shadows, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, and depth of field. These treatments can change how a character reads on screen even when the underlying asset remains the same.

How to judge a specific trailer

A visible difference is not, by itself, proof of deception or proof that the final game will match the trailer. The footage type and disclosed conditions provide useful context, but a universal standard for marketing labels is not established by the examples above.

  1. Check the footage label. Look for wording that identifies pre-rendered video, a real-time cinematic, or gameplay capture. “In-engine” does not by itself mean ordinary gameplay.
  2. Compare the camera. A cinematic close-up and a normal gameplay view may use different model detail, framing, or LOD.
  3. Look for rendering differences. Lighting, shadows, texture quality, color correction, depth of field, and effects can change the character’s appearance.
  4. Note runtime conditions if provided. Platform, graphics settings, build, and development stage affect what the footage can establish.
  5. Keep the conclusion narrow. If those details are missing, the trailer shows how the scene was presented—not necessarily how it will look during play on a particular system.
