CRT TV vs. Modern TV for Retro Gaming: What Looks and Plays Better?

Neither a CRT nor a modern TV is always better for retro gaming. A compatible CRT gives analog-output consoles a straightforward connection and the familiar CRT image; a modern TV offers a larger, sharper, more versatile screen, but may need a compatible scaler to accept the console’s signal. Which one looks and plays better depends on the console, connection, display, and settings.

Will your retro console work on a modern TV?

It depends on the console’s video output and the television’s actual inputs and supported formats. Older consoles may send analog standard-definition video, while a modern TV may lack a matching input or may not handle the signal as expected. Check the console’s output, the TV’s manual for its input and format support, and whether you need a converter or scaler before choosing a setup.

Do not assume that a TV that accepts a named digital resolution will also accept analog 240p or handle a console’s 480i signal correctly. RTINGS’ supported-resolution tests cover specified formats received through physical inputs and do not include upscaling; they do not establish 240p compatibility for a particular TV. RTINGS’ supported-resolution test details can help explain what those tests do—and do not—show.

What looks better: CRT image or modern sharpness?

Why choose a CRT

If the console and CRT have compatible connections, the path can be simple: connect the console’s analog output to the matching input on the set. Many players also prefer the CRT presentation for older games. That is a matter of taste, not a measured universal advantage; CRTs vary by model and condition, and this comparison does not establish that every CRT produces the same image.

A CRT also takes up space, and a used set’s condition matters. Confirm that the particular television has the input you need and is in usable condition.

Why choose a modern TV

A modern TV provides a large, sharp display and can serve newer devices as well. But a low-resolution or analog console signal may need conversion and scaling for the TV’s inputs and fixed-pixel screen. The resulting image depends on the console’s output, the conversion path, and the TV’s handling—not simply on whether the screen is modern.

Image preference is subjective: some players want the CRT look, while others prefer a clean, sharp presentation. A scaler may add visual treatments such as scanlines or masks, but those effects should not be confused with reproducing every aspect of a CRT.

Which setup plays better? Understand input lag

Input lag is the delay between a source sending an image and the TV displaying it. It can involve image acquisition, video processing, and display time. Scaling and motion interpolation are examples of processing that can contribute to delay; the TV model and the amount of processing matter. Older analog connections can also affect acquisition, so the whole signal chain deserves attention.

For a modern TV, enable Game Mode for the input used by the console and check the set’s behavior with that specific input. RTINGS calls Game Mode the most important general setting for reducing TV input lag, but it does not guarantee zero delay or identical results across models. Its input-lag explanation was updated October 3, 2025. RTINGS lists less than 15 ms as a good result for its specified 4K-at-60-Hz input-lag test; that benchmark is not a CRT comparison or a measurement of a retro-console setup.

There is no apples-to-apples figure here that establishes a universal latency winner between CRTs and modern TVs. A scaler’s published latency is only one part of the end-to-end path; the display and the rest of the setup contribute too.

Using an analog-output console with a modern TV

An external scaler is one practical route when the console’s analog output does not match the TV’s inputs. For example, RetroTINK describes its 5X Pro as a processor for analog retro-console video. Its product page lists composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART inputs; supported input formats include 240p and 480i, and it provides digital output for an HDTV. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. See the RetroTINK-5X Pro product page for current specifications and compatibility notes.

RetroTINK publishes latency specifications of approximately 0.25 frames in Framelock mode and 0.25–1.25 frames with Triple Buffering. These figures describe the scaler, not the total delay from controller input to displayed game image. The TV and the rest of the signal chain still matter.

The 5X Pro also lists adjustable scanline functions and masks. These let you add certain CRT-inspired visual treatments; they do not establish CRT equivalence. If the intended chain is scaler-to-CRT, check the device’s current firmware notes: the firmware update log describes 240p output restoration and 480i output addition, and characterizes downscaling options as experimental or unsupported. It also says third-party HDMI-to-analog dongle operation is not guaranteed.

Choose by the setup you actually want

Your priority Likely fit What to verify
Original-style CRT presentation and a direct analog connection A compatible CRT That the console and TV share a usable input; the set’s condition and available space
A large, sharp display that also works with current devices A modern TV Game Mode behavior for the actual model and input; acceptance and handling of the console’s signal
Modern TV, but original analog-output hardware Modern TV plus a compatible scaler may fit Console output, scaler inputs and supported formats, TV digital input, desired output mode, and end-to-end latency
As little extra equipment and setup as possible A compatible CRT or a console that already outputs a supported digital signal Actual ports and format support before buying or connecting equipment

These are decision aids, not a universal product ranking. For a particular console and television, verify the exact signal path rather than assuming compatibility from a port name or resolution label.

Sources and scope

The comparison is about the trade-offs between CRTs and modern TVs, not a model-by-model buying guide. Specific televisions differ in Game Mode behavior, scaling, deinterlacing, and support for legacy formats; the sources cited here do not establish which current models directly accept 240p or their latency with every retro console. For a precise answer, check the manuals and independent signal and lag tests for the particular console and TV.
