Why advocates object to these jokes
A joke can target an awkward situation without mocking a medical condition. Advocates draw concern when the humor instead depends on someone being exposed to an allergen, reacting, or being dismissed for needing precautions. Their concern is that an audience may take away the idea that allergies are not serious, or that provoking a reaction is acceptable.

Food allergy reactions can be serious. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) wrote in 2021 that anaphylaxis can be fatal if not treated promptly. Its president and CEO, Kenneth Mendez, put the advocacy position this way: “The very real fear that people experience during an allergic reaction is a serious matter and should never be a punchline.” This is an advocacy statement, not a finding from a controlled study. What happened in the Peter Rabbit controversy
The 2018 controversy centered on a scene in Peter Rabbit in which rabbits throw blackberries at Tom McGregor after knowing he is allergic. Michigan Medicine reported that Sony apologized. Pediatrician Christina Grech, M.D., of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, said: “The idea that a child could come away from watching a popular family movie thinking that food allergens are good material for pranks is a frightening prospect.” That comment expresses a clinical and child-safety concern; it does not establish that viewers were harmed by the scene.

For advocates, the key issue is not simply whether a scene is comic. It is whether the laugh depends on deliberate allergen exposure and treats the risk or the person’s response as trivial. That distinction matters particularly in family entertainment, where children may be part of the audience.
What the available evidence says—and does not say
Michigan Medicine summarized a content analysis of 115 television shows and movies that referenced food allergies. Humorous reactions made up more than half of the scenes evaluated, according to its 2018 report. This is a finding as reported by Michigan Medicine, not a measurement of all media.

Michigan Medicine also summarized an experiment in which college students who watched humorous food-allergy clips showed significantly lower support for some school safety policies than students who did not watch those clips. That result suggests a possible effect on audience attitudes in that study. It does not prove that every joke changes behavior, that viewers will disregard a particular person’s needs, or that a specific portrayal caused real-world harm. The underlying studies’ detailed methods are not established by the summaries cited here.
AAFA’s April 6, 2021 letter states that “Over one-third of food allergic children have reported being bullied because of their food allergies,” citing Sicherer et al. (2010) in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. The figure is AAFA’s wording and attribution; it should not be read as a new estimate from 2021 or as independent verification of the original study.

Examples beyond the film
The Tonight Show segment
In an April 6, 2021 letter, AAFA objected to a Tonight Show segment in which Jimmy Fallon and Milo Ventimiglia joked during a prompt to portray tongue swelling, including references to shellfish and EpiPens. AAFA argued that making light of a reaction could minimize its seriousness. The letter was signed by Mendez, AAFA’s president and CEO.
Saturday Night Live
AAFA’s advocacy index also records its objection to a 2022 Saturday Night Live “Home Repair Show” segment. The organization reiterated its concern that such portrayals may encourage peers to dismiss allergy risks and contribute to bullying. This describes AAFA’s position, not proof that the segment produced those outcomes.

How to assess a portrayal
There is no formal rating standard in the sources cited here. These questions can help distinguish humor about a situation from humor that trivializes a health risk:

- Is exposure deliberate? A prank involving a known allergen raises a different concern from a character misunderstanding a situation without exposing anyone.
- How serious is the reaction shown? Does the scene acknowledge the potential danger, or present a medical emergency as harmless slapstick?
- Who is likely to watch? A portrayal aimed at children may carry particular concern for advocates because young viewers could imitate or normalize what they see.
- Are consequences minimized? Consider whether the story treats the person’s needs and the response to a reaction realistically, or makes dismissing them part of the laugh.
What advocates are asking audiences and creators to notice
AAFA’s position is that minimizing allergy risk may teach peers not to take reactions seriously and may encourage bullying. That concern sits alongside an important evidence limit: the reported studies suggest patterns in portrayals and a possible attitude effect in one experiment, but do not establish that every joke causes harm. A careful discussion can recognize the difference between comic intent and a portrayal’s possible message without claiming more than the evidence supports.
