The accompanying feature says it can create swarms of flies or other insects and includes a scene, models, textures, camera, lighting, and compositing settings. It reports compatibility with Blender 4.5 and above, with compositing settings optimized for Blender 5.2; check the current listing for changes before relying on those versions.
What ibotpl’s Blender fly-swarm generator includes
80 Level’s October 6, 2026 feature, credited to Amber Rutherford, describes a downloadable generator that can create swarms of flies or other insects. The package is presented as a production-ready scene, not just a Geometry Nodes graph: it includes models, textures, a camera, lighting, and compositing settings. The feature does not publish the complete node graph or a step-by-step explanation of how the effect is built.

The feature states: “The generator is compatible with Blender 4.5 and above, with the compositing settings optimized for Blender 5.2.” These are the versions reported by the article on its publication date, not a guarantee of present-day compatibility.
How to make a procedural fly swarm in Blender
A practical learning path is to separate the work into an insect asset, its appearance, its motion, and the system that distributes and controls multiple instances. Ryan King Art’s indexed tutorial, “Create Swarms of Flies with Geometry Nodes (Blender Tutorial)”, organizes its sections in that broad order:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Set up the bug generator context. The indexed description introduces this at 0:16.
- Model the fly. Modeling begins at 1:16.
- Build the fly material. The material section begins at 10:16.
- Animate the fly. The animation section begins at 17:30.
- Use Geometry Nodes for the swarm. The Geometry Nodes section begins at 23:27.
Those timestamps establish a useful sequence for learning, but they do not document ibotpl’s particular implementation. The indexed video page exposed limited detail, so its headings should be treated as a workflow outline rather than a node-by-node recipe.
How surface placement and motion can fit together
Distribute instances over a surface
Blender’s 5.1 manual describes Scatter on Surface as a way to distribute points or instances over a mesh. Its controls include density and distribution options such as randomization and Poisson disk sampling. In a general swarm workflow, a mesh can therefore act as a placement source, with instanced insect geometry placed across it. This explains one relevant Blender tool; it does not establish that ibotpl used Scatter on Surface or any particular settings.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For an effect that needs to change over time, Geometry Nodes also supports Simulation Zones for building custom physics simulations. Blender’s manual notes that baked simulation data is stored according to the project file’s save location, which matters when moving or sharing a project. Simulation Zones are one possible production tool, not evidence of the featured generator’s motion system.
Keep older particle behavior distinct
The Blender 4.3 manual describes legacy particle boids as trying to reach goal objects and flee predators according to Boid Brain settings. That is a separate particle-system approach, not a description of the Geometry Nodes workflow in the featured setup. Blender developer documentation also discusses node-based particle systems as a proposal for a more flexible system; proposal documentation should not be read as confirmation that a specific feature is released or available in a particular Blender version.

Choose between learning the workflow and using a generator
| Option | What is established | Best fit | Limits of the available detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build from a tutorial workflow | Ryan King Art’s indexed tutorial is organized around bug setup, modeling, materials, animation, and Geometry Nodes. | Artists who want to learn the stages and develop their own scene. | The indexed headings do not reveal every node, parameter, or exact implementation. |
| Use ibotpl’s generator | 80 Level describes a full scene with models, textures, camera, lighting, and compositing settings, and reports Blender 4.5+ compatibility with compositing optimized for Blender 5.2. | Artists seeking a packaged starting point rather than assembling every scene component themselves. | The feature does not provide the complete node graph or establish current product availability or compatibility beyond what it reported on October 6, 2026. |
