Why FFmpeg Shows a Broken Pipe Error on a YouTube Radio Stream

FFmpeg’s “Broken pipe” reports a failed write, not its root cause. Find the failing endpoint first, then isolate input, processing, and output before applying recovery settings.

FFmpeg’s “Broken pipe” message means it tried to write to a pipe or output connection that had stopped accepting data. It does not, by itself, identify why the other end closed. On a “YouTube radio stream,” FFmpeg might be reading a YouTube stream, publishing to YouTube Live, or exchanging data with another program in a shell pipeline—so the command and the lines immediately before the error determine what to troubleshoot. FFmpeg’s error source maps EPIPE to “Broken pipe,” but does not explain the cause of a particular disconnection.

First establish which way the stream is going

“YouTube radio stream” can mean more than one setup. FFmpeg could be pulling a stream from YouTube, pushing encoded audio and video to YouTube Live, or reading from or writing to a shell pipe connected to another process. Those paths fail at different points. YouTube’s encoder requirements apply when publishing to YouTube Live; they do not automatically apply when FFmpeg is reading a YouTube source.

  • Reading from YouTube: YouTube or an intermediary is the input. Check whether that input is accessible and whether the input connection ends or drops.
  • Publishing to YouTube Live: YouTube’s ingest server is the output. Check the output connection and encoder compatibility.
  • Using a shell pipeline: Identify which program writes to the pipe and which reads it. Either process may close its end first.

Locate the endpoint that stopped accepting data

Keep the full command and complete timestamped logs from every process involved. Read the messages immediately before “Broken pipe” and identify the operation or URL named there: standard output, a local file, an HTTP source, an RTMP destination, or another endpoint. Note whether the failure happens immediately, after streaming successfully for a while, or only when input ends. These clues narrow the failing part of the pipeline; the error text alone cannot establish a root cause.

If a downloader or extractor prints Python’s BrokenPipeError, that is not the same evidence as FFmpeg reporting an error while writing its own output. Preserve each process’s stderr and exit status so you can tell which program emitted the message and which one exited first.

Isolate input, processing, and output

Test one side at a time rather than changing several settings at once. A 2019 FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion used local-file and destination-isolation tests for a related pipe-to-RTMP problem; that is a useful diagnostic pattern, not a guaranteed fix for every radio-stream command. Read the related FFmpeg-user discussion.

  1. Test the input on its own. If FFmpeg is reading a YouTube stream, check whether it can open and read that input independently. Record whether it fails at connection time, during playback, or at the end.
  2. Test processing without the remote destination. Use the input to create a short local output file. If this succeeds, FFmpeg can at least process that sample without the remote server in the path.
  3. Test the destination separately. Use a known-good local file as input and try the same remote output. If that fails too, focus on the destination connection or output configuration rather than the original input.
  4. For a shell pipe, test both processes. Check the producer and consumer independently where possible, and compare their logs and exit statuses. A consumer that exits early can leave the producer writing to a closed pipe.

These tests help locate the failing side; they do not prove why a particular server or process closed its connection.

Choose recovery options for the failing direction

HTTP input reconnects

If the failing endpoint is an HTTP input and the observed issue is a disconnect, FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options include reconnect for disconnects before EOF, reconnect_at_eof for treating EOF as an error on live or endless streams, and options for retrying selected network and HTTP errors. Retry limits are also configurable. Consult the HTTP protocol documentation and the options available in your installed FFmpeg build; choose only settings that match the input protocol and the failure you observed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Input reconnect options do not fix a broken RTMP output write. They are for the input side, and whether they work depends on the source server and the disconnection.

  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Network output recovery with the FIFO muxer

For a network output that fails temporarily, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can decouple encoding from muxing and attempt recovery. Its recovery behavior, retry timing, and queue settings depend on the output and command. If the queue fills, drop_pkts_on_overflow can allow processing to continue by omitting packets. That trades completeness for continuity; it does not repair the underlying endpoint problem or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

Do not paste a generic FIFO option block into an unrelated command: the appropriate muxer, codec, output protocol, and tolerance for missing packets depend on the actual setup.

If FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube Live

First confirm that YouTube Live is the output. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Treat these as compatibility checks, not a diagnosis of every broken pipe; also review the live control room’s diagnostics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If FFmpeg is pulling a YouTube stream instead, these publishing settings do not diagnose the input connection.

Common troubleshooting outcomes

What you observe What to check next
The error names standard output or a shell pipe. Identify the producer and consumer, capture both logs and exit statuses, and check whether one process exits before the other finishes writing.
The input fails before FFmpeg produces output. Test the input independently. If it is HTTP and disconnects, consult the installed build’s HTTP reconnect options and match them to the observed failure.
A local output works, but the remote output fails. Focus on the remote destination and its output configuration. If it is YouTube Live, compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s published guidance.
A known-good local file also fails at the remote destination. The original input is less likely to be the only problem. Investigate the destination connection or output settings; input reconnect options will not repair an output write failure.
The FIFO queue overflows while processing continues. Check whether packet dropping is enabled and whether missing parts of the stream are acceptable. Dropped packets mean the output is not complete.

A definitive command-level diagnosis needs the full FFmpeg command, complete logs, FFmpeg version and build, operating system, and a clear statement of whether FFmpeg is reading from YouTube or publishing to YouTube Live.
